Before Using Your VCR 5Putting Batteries in the Remote Control

● In this VCR, use only tapes with the mark.● Make sure any light adhesive stick-on notes are removed from

the video cassette tape before putting the tape in the VCR.Removable labels like these can jam the VCR.

● Periodic maintenance is required to maintain your VCR’s excel-lent performance. This VCR has an Automatic Head Cleaner.However, the video heads will require replacement eventually.Only an authorized service center should perform this service.

1Remove the battery compartment lid on the bottom of theremote control by sliding the lid in the direction of the arrow.

2Insert two AA batteries inside the battery compartment withtheir + and – ends aligned as indicated.

3Replace the battery compartment lid.

Using the Remote Control● Point the remote control at the VCR’s remote sensor (see page

21) when using the remote control to operate the VCR.● Do not put objects between the remote control and the VCR.

Video cassette tapes have record tabs to ensure that recordingsare not erased accidentally.

1To prevent recording, break off the tab with a screwdriver.

2To allow recording, cover the hole with cellophane tape.

3Connect the RF coaxial cable (supplied) to the OUT Jack on the back of theVCR and to the ANTENNA IN Jack on the TV. (You may use either a snap-ontype (supplied) or screw-on type of coaxial cable, whichever you prefer.)

5Set the CH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR to CH3 or CH4, whicheverchannel is not used or least used in your area. Set the TV to the same channel. Forexample, when playing a tape, if the CH3/CH4 switch is set to CH3, the TV should be onchannel 03.

8 Hookups With a Cable Box / Direct Broadcast SystemThere are two ways to connect your Cable Box/DBS to the VCR. With this connection:● You may view any channel.● You must select channels at the Cable Box/DBS. Channels cannot be changed at the VCR.● You may not view a channel other than the one you are recording.● You may not program channels at the VCR.● You can only program a timer recording for one channel at a time. Set the TV and the VCR to the

Cable Box/DBS output channel (channel 03 or 04), and set your Cable Box/DBS to the channel youwant to record. When you enter the channel you want to record in a timer recording, select channel 03or 04 (the Cable Box/DBS output channel). (This is step 7 on page 28.) Leave the Cable Box/DBS on fora timer recording.

1With the VCR on and in VCR position (the VCR/TV light will appear on thedisplay panel), use the CHANNEL o/p buttons to set the VCR to theCable Box/DBS output channel (channel 03 or 04).

2Set the TV to the same channel to which you set the VCR. Set theCH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR to the same channel.

3Select the channel you want to view/record at the Cable Box/DBS.

1Connect a Cable signal to the IN Jack on the Cable Box/DBS.

2Use an RF coaxial cable (supplied) to connect the OUT Jack on the CableBox/DBS to the ANT(enna) IN Jack on the VCR.

3Use a second RF coaxial cable to connect the OUT Jack on the VCR to theTV’s ANTENNA IN Jack.

With this connection:● You may watch one channel while recording another.● You may not record scrambled channels.

Recording One Channel/Watching Another

1Put the Cable Box/DBS on the same channel as theVCR’s CH3/CH4 switch. (Make sure the TV is on the CableBox/DBS output channel, 03 or 04.)Then, with the VCR in VCR position (the VCR/TV lightwill appear on the display panel), use the CHANNELo/p buttons to select the channel you want to record atthe VCR. Start the recording.

2Press the VCR/TV button once to put the VCR in TVposition. (The VCR/TV light will disappear.)

3Select the channel you want to watch at the CableBox/DBS.

• When you play a tape, make surethe Cable Box/DBS is set to thesame channel as the CH3/CH4switch on the VCR. Set the TV tothe Cable Box/DBS output channel(03 or 04).

1Connect the antenna or cable to the ANT(enna) IN Jackon the back of the VCR.

2Connect a video cable to the yellow VIDEO OUT Jack onthe back of the VCR. Then, connect the other end of thevideo cable to the VIDEO IN Jack on your TV.

3Connect an audio cable to the white AUDIO OUT Jackon the back of the VCR. Then, connect the other end ofthe audio cable to the AUDIO IN Jack on your TV.(If your TV has Right and Left AUDIO IN Jacks, you must use a“Y” splitter audio cable as illustrated to deliver audio to the TV’sright and left channels.)

4Turn on your TV, making sure it is in Line Input mode. Pleaserefer to your TV owner’s manual for details.

• This hookup will not give you stereosound. To get stereo sound, use theconnections on pages six-seven andselect the channel to be viewed atthe TV (with the VCR turned off).

Turning on Your VCR 11● Before turning on your VCR, make sure there are batteries in

the remote control and the VCR and TV are connected (seepages five-10).

● You can not set up channels if you are using a Cable Box/DBS.● The instructions on this page only work when you turn on the

VCR for the first time. If there is a power failure or if the VCRis unplugged for more than one minute, you may need to repeatthe instructions on this page.

1Press the POWER button. The POWER light and the VCR/TVlight will appear.

2Turn on the TV. Set it to the same channel as theCH3/CH4 switch on the back of the VCR. The menu shownbelow will appear.

• If you do not see any on-screen dis-plays when you turn on the VCR,check your hookups, then try again.If you still do not see any on-screendisplays, follow the steps under“Automatic Channel Setup” on page12 and “Language Selection” onpage 16.

• If you try to set up channels whenthere is no antenna or cable connect-ed to the VCR, programming willappear to take place. Eventually,AUTO SET UP will appear on thescreen steadily, and channel program-ming will stop. Connect an antennaor cable to the ANT(enna) IN jack ofthe VCR, then press the MENU but-ton, the F.FWD button, or theREWIND button again. Channel pro-gramming will begin again.

5Press the MENU button, the F.FWD button, or theREWIND button to begin automatic channel setup. AUTOSET UP will flash on the screen. When channels are set up, the TVwill go to the lowest channel available.The VCR will memorize all available channels, so when you usethe CHANNEL o/p buttons, you’ll only scan through channelsthat you receive.

3Press the PLAY button or the STOP button to selectENGLISH or ESPAÑOL. [ON] will appear beside your choice.

4Press the F.FWD button or the MENU button. AUTO SETUP will appear on the screen.

12 Automatic Channel SetupAlthough your VCR may automatically set up the channels youreceive when you turn it on for the first time, this function letsyou set up channels again. Make sure:● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will

appear on the display panel. If it does not, press the VCR/TVbutton once.)

1Press the MENU button until the main menu appears.

2Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly toselect CHANNEL SET UP. Then, press the F.FWD button.

3Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly toselect AUTO SET UP.

4Press the F.FWD button. The VCR will memorize all availablechannels. When setup is complete, the lowest channel youreceive will appear on the screen. • Line Input mode will always be

stored in the VCR’s memory aschannel 00. When you select chan-nel 00 with the CHANNEL o/p

buttons or the Number buttons,LineIn Rear (L1) will appear on thescreen.

• You can not program channels ifyou are using a Cable Box/DBS.Details are on pages eight-nine.

On-Screen Status Displays 17You may access on-screen status displays by pressing the DISPLAY button repeatedly. On-screen statusdisplays may include the current time, channel, and other information.● Press the DISPLAY button once. The COUNT on-screen status display will appear for five seconds. After

five seconds, only the real-time counter will appear on the screen. This counter shows you the elapsedplaying time of the tape (from the point at which the real-time counter was set to zero).

S-VHS Quasi Play Back (SQPB)This unit has a SQPB function that allows you to view a taperecorded in S-VHS format. A tape recorded in S-VHS format willplay the same as a tape recorded in normal format. This unitdetects whether the tape is recorded in S-VHS format or in nor-mal format.

Starting an OTR

1Use the CHANNEL (o/p) buttons or the Number but-tons to select the channel you want to record.

2Press the REC(ord)/OTR button on the VCR repeatedlyuntil the desired recording length (30 minutes to eighthours) appears in the upper left corner of the screen.Recording will begin immediately.● The RECORD button on the remote control cannot be used to

start an OTR.

The One-Touch Recording function allows you to program animmediate timed recording 30 minutes to eight hours long. Beforeyou begin, make sure:● Channels are set up.● The desired recording speed (SP, SLP) has been selected with

the SPEED button.● There is a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is

intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s).● The VCR is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it

does not, press the VCR/TV button once.)

Stopping an OTRTo stop an OTR before recording is finished, press the STOP but-ton on the remote control. To cancel the OTR but continuerecording, press the REC(ord)/OTR button on the VCR repeat-edly until REC appears in the upper left corner of the screen.

Press the REC(ord)/OTRbutton on the VCR repeat-edly.

OTR (0:30)

• To change the recording lengthwhile an OTR is in progress, pressthe REC(ord)/OTR button on theVCR repeatedly until the desiredlength appears on the screen.

• You can not pause recording duringan OTR.

• If the preset time for a timerrecording comes up during an OTR,the OTR has priority. The timerrecording will not occur.

• To show the time remaining for anOTR, press the DISPLAY buttonrepeatedly until OTR and the timeremaining appear in the upper leftcorner of the screen.

• If the end of the tape is reachedduring an OTR, the VCR will stoprecording, eject the tape, and turnitself off.

26 Timer RecordingFollow the steps below to program your VCR to record TV pro-grams while you’re away from home. You can program up to seventimer recordings. For each one, the VCR will turn itself on, record,and turn itself off automatically. Before you begin make sure:● Channels are set up.● The clock is set.● There is a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is

intact and the tape is long enough to record the program(s).● The VCR is in VCR position. The VCR/TV light will appear. If it

does not, press the VCR/TV button once.

1First, press the MENU button until the main menuappears. Next, press the PLAY button or the STOP but-ton repeatedly to select TIMER PROGRAMMING. Then,press the F.FWD button. Program numbers that do not have atimer recording stored will flash.

2Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly toselect a program number. Then, press the F.FWD button.(If you select a program number that already has a timer recordingstored, information about that program will appear. Press the PLAYbutton or the STOP button to select another program number.)

3Press the PLAY button or the STOP button repeatedly toselect a ONCE, DAILY, or WEEKLY recording. When thearrow is beside your choice, press the F.FWD button.● ONCE - The VCR will record a TV program on any day you

choose, up to 12 months away.● DAILY - The VCR will record a TV program at the same time

on the same channel every day, Monday through Friday.● WEEKLY - The VCR will record a TV program at the same time

on the same channel every week, for example, every Monday.

5While the information is flashing, enter the correct infor-mation by pressing the PLAY button or the STOP button.

6When all the information is correct, press the COUNTERRESET/EXIT button to exit. Turn off the VCR before thetimer recording.

Correcting a Timer RecordingIf you need to correct a timer recording after you have finishedsetting the program, follow these steps. Make sure the VCR is onand is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it doesnot, press the VCR/TV button once.)

2Press the PLAY button or the STOP button to select thetimer recording you want to correct.NOTE: If some empty program numbers exist, the lower program num-ber appears on the screen by pressing the REWIND button. In thiscase, you can enter the new program.

Auto Satellite Link Using a Satellite Tuner 31If you connect your VCR to a satellite tuner that has theElectronic Program Guide, the VCR will turn itself on, record,then turn itself off. First, read the owner’s manual of your satellitetuner; then, follow the steps below. Before you begin:● Use audio and video cables to connect the VCR’s

AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks to the satellite tuner’s AUDIO/VIDEOOUT jacks.

● Press the SPEED button to select the desired recording tapespeed (SP or SLP).

● Set the clock. Details are on pages 14-15.● Put a tape in the VCR. Make sure the tape’s record tab is intact

and the tape is long enough to record the program(s).

• To stop an Auto Satellite Linkrecording that is in progress, pressthe STOP/EJECT button on the VCR.

• If a program has copy guard pro-tection, it may not record clearly.

• When you use this feature, the firstfew seconds of a program may notbe recorded.

• If your satellite tuner synchronizesthe recording start time with thebroadcasting start time, refer to thetuner’s owner’s manual.

• When you turn on the VCR power,the AUTO SATELLITE LINK will becancelled.

• If the start time for a timer record-ing comes up during an AutoSatellite Link recording, the timerrecording has priority.

2Press the MENU button until the main menu appears.

38 Index SearchWhen you make a recording, the VCR places an index mark at thebeginning of the recording. Essentially, an index mark is a type of“bookmark” for your tape. This feature is useful if you have sever-al different programs recorded on a single tape.You may skip over programs by following the steps below. Beforeyou begin, make sure:● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will

appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.)● There is a tape in the VCR.

1Press the INDEX SEARCH button.

2Within 30 seconds, press the PLAY button, the STOPbutton, or the INDEX SEARCH button repeatedly untilthe number of programs that you want to skip appearsbeneath INDEX SEARCH on-screen.This number should include the current program. For example, ifyou are currently viewing program 2 and you want to skip to pro-gram 5, select 03 to skip three programs (2, 3, and 4). Playbackwill begin at program 5. If you want to skip to program 1, select02 to skip two programs (2 and 1). Playback will begin at program

Time Search 39The Time Search function allows you to go to a specific point on atape. You will enter the exact amount of playback time that youwish to skip in order to reach the specified point.Make sure:● The VCR is on and is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will

appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV button once.)● There is a tape in the VCR.

1Press the TIME SEARCH button.

2Within 30 seconds, press the PLAY button, the STOPbutton, or the TIME SEARCH button repeatedly untilyour desired length of time appears. (Example: 2:50 for 2hours 50 minutes) You may also press and hold the PLAY buttonor the STOP button until you reach the desired length of time.

3Within 30 seconds, press the REWIND button or theF.FWD button. The VCR begins rewinding or fast forwarding tothe specified point. The time counts down on-screen beneathTIME SEARCH as the searching progresses. When the tape finish-es rewinding or fast forwarding, the VCR will start playback auto-matically.

40 Quick Find The Quick Find feature locates the beginning of each recording ona tape, then plays the first portion of the recording at high speedfor 30 seconds. After it plays the portion, the VCR fast forwardsthe tape to the next recording. This process is repeated until theend of the tape is reached, or until you stop the Quick Find.

1Press the QUICK-FIND button.

The VCR will fast forward the tape to the beginning of the nextrecording. The VCR will play the tape at high speed for 30 sec-onds, then go to the next recording. To skip immediately to the beginning of the next recording on thetape, press the QUICK-FIND button on the remote control.

2To resume normal tape playback, press the PLAY button.

• There must be a tape in the VCR.• This function will not operate during

a recording.• To cancel a Quick Find that is in

progress, press the STOP button.• When the end of a tape is reached

during a Quick Find, the VCR willrewind the tape. Details are onpage 41.

Automatic PlaybackWhen you put a tape in the VCR, the power will come on auto-matically. If the tape’s record tab is missing, playback will begin. (Ifa timer recording is set, you may have to press the POWER but-ton to turn on the VCR. Make sure you turn off the VCR for thetimer recording later. If you insert a tape without a record tabwhen a timer recording is set, the VCR will eject the tape.)

Automatic Rewind, Eject, OffWhen a tape is played, fast forwarded, or recorded to its end, theVCR will rewind the tape to the beginning, eject the tape, andturn itself off. If the real-time counter memory is set, the VCR will only rewindthe tape to the point at which the counter is set to zero, thenstop. The VCR will not eject the tape or shut itself off.

Tape EjectA tape can be ejected with the VCR power on or off (but theVCR must be plugged in). If a Timer Recording is programmed, atape can only be ejected with the power on. Be sure to insert atape for the Timer Recording, then turn off the VCR power.

Automatic Tracking AdjustmentThe VCR automatically adjusts tracking to give you the best possi-ble picture quality. With some recordings, however, you may get abetter picture using the manual tracking controls (see below).

Manual TrackingTo adjust the tracking manually, press the CHANNEL (o/p) but-tons on the VCR during playback.NOTES:• Tracking is returned to automatic tracking adjustment when a tape is

inserted or when the STOP button is pressed to halt playback.• Automatic tracking adjustment will not work during slow motion play-

back. Instead, use the CHANNEL (o/p) buttons on the VCR or onthe remote control to reduce noise lines in slow motion playback.

• Manual tracking will not operate when the VCR is in Still mode.• Use the CHANNEL (o/p) buttons on the VCR or on the remote

control to remove vertical jitter in a Still picture.

You may be able to solve the problem yourself.If you need to call a customer service representative, please know the model number and serial number ofyour product before you call. This information is displayed on the back of the product. Also, please take amoment to identify the problem you are having, and be prepared to explain this to the representative. Ifyou believe the representative will need to help you with operations, please stay near the product. Ourrepresentatives will be happy to assist you.

The VCR has no power.• Make sure the power plug is completely connected to an AC (alternating current) outlet.• Make sure the power is turned on.

A power failure occurred.• Follow the steps on page 11 to select a language and set up channels, if necessary. Then, follow the

steps on pages 14-15 to reset the clock.• Timer recordings may be lost if the power fails for more than one minute. Reprogram the timer record-

ings. Details are on pages 26-30.

The remote control will not operate the VCR.• Aim the remote control directly at the VCR’s remote sensor. Details are on page 21.• Remove all obstacles between the remote control and the VCR.• Inspect and/or replace the batteries in the remote control. Details are on page five.

The VCR does not respond normally to the remote control. (For example, the VCR maychange channels multiple times when you press the CHANNEL o button once.)• Install new batteries (preferably alkaline) in the remote control.

The motor (cylinder) rotates even when the VCR is in Stop mode.• To enable the quick play mechanism, the cylinder will rotate for about five minutes. This is normal. The

quick play mechanism switches the tape mechanism from Stop to Play in just one second.

A TV program cannot be recorded.• Check the connections between the VCR, TV, antenna/cable, and Cable Box/DBS, if applicable. Details

are on pages six-10.• Make sure the tape has a record tab. Details are on page five.

The VCR will not perform a timer recording.• Make sure the recording start and stop times are set correctly. Details are on pages 26-30.• Make sure a tape is in the VCR and the tape has a record tab. Details are on page five.• Make sure the VCR power is off.• Make sure the clock is set. Details are on pages 14-15.• The VCR may not perform or continue a timer recording if a power interruption of more than one

minute occurs before or during the timer recording, even if the power comes back on afterward. Set upchannels and reset the clock before re-programming the timer recording(s).

• Finish programming a timer recording at least five minutes before the recording is scheduled to begin.• If, after programming a timer recording, you turn off the VCR without inserting a tape, the TIMER light

will blink. Insert a tape with the record tab intact.• Noon is 12 p.m. Midnight is 12 a.m.• If the tape runs out before the recording ends, the VCR will stop, eject the tape, and turn itself off. The

TIMER light will blink. • If a tape without a record tab is inserted (when the power is off for a timer recording), the VCR will

eject the tape. The TIMER light will blink. Insert a tape that allows recording.• If the preset time for a timer recording comes up during a One-Touch Recording, the OTR has priority.• When two timer recordings overlap, the timer recording with the earliest start time will have priority.

When the earliest program has finished recording, the next program number will begin recording.

button on the remote control.• Gently push on the center of the tape when putting it in the VCR. Never force the tape into the VCR.• If a timer recording is set, the VCR will not accept a tape that does not have a record tab. You may only

insert a tape with the record tab intact.

VCR ejects the tape when the RECORD button is pressed or when the VCR power is turnedoff to set a timer recording.• Make sure the tape has a record tab. Details are on page five.

There is no playback picture, or the playback picture is noisy or contains streaks.• Make sure the TV is on the same channel as the VCR’s CH3/CH4 switch. Details are on page seven.• Make sure the VCR is in VCR position. (The VCR/TV light will appear. If it does not, press the VCR/TV

button once.)• Make sure channel 3 or 4 is properly adjusted.• Adjust the tracking. Details are on page 41.• TVs placed too close to the VCR can cause interference during tape playback. Move the VCR away from

the TV.

TV programs cannot be watched normally.• Press the VCR/TV button to put the VCR in TV position. (The VCR/TV light will disappear.)• Check the connections between the VCR, TV, antenna/cable, and Cable Box/DBS (if applicable). Details

are on pages six-10.

The reception on all channels is poor.• You may need to tune your TV again.

Line Input• If you accidentally enter Line Input mode (LineIn Rear (L1) will appear on your TV screen briefly), press

the CHANNEL (o/p) buttons or use the Number buttons to select another channel.

The playback picture is too dim, too bright, or fluctuates in brightness.• Some programs may be broadcast with copyright protection technology in order to protect the rights of

copyright owners. This technology is used on programs that are recorded on video tapes or DigitalVideo Discs (DVDs), as well as some programs broadcast by antenna/cable/satellite television channels.Programs broadcast with copyright protection technology may not record clearly. Likewise, if you play atape that is a recording of a copyright protected program, the picture may not be clear. Tapes of copy-right protected programs may have a picture that is dark or dim, or the brightness of the picture mayfluctuate. Therefore, you should avoid recording or playing copies of copyright protected programs. ThisVCR incorporates copyright protection technology that is protected by method claims of certain U.S.patents and other intellectual property rights owned by Macrovision Corporation and other rights own-ers. Use of this copyright protection technology must be authorized by Macrovision Corporation and isintended for home and other limited viewing uses only, unless otherwise authorized by MacrovisionCorporation. Reverse engineering or disassembly is prohibited.
