1. find your inspirationAfter you’ve found your subject
matter, find your inspiration. Start on Youtube or Vimeo. What are other
people doing? What style inspires you?
2. write a scriptEven if it’s just an outline, take the time.
What do I mean by script? This can be
the story in your words, the questions
for your subject, or a basic outline.
3. create a shotlistIt doesn’t matter if you’re hiring a
team or shooting this on your own. It’s important to visualize the shoot and
capture as much of the list as you can.
4. reach out to all involvedIt’s important to communicate with the production team, but also the subjects. EX: Are the co-op truck logos updated? Uniforms? Do people know you’ll be there at what time?
6. fix it in postVoice over resourcesGraphicsAudio jungle Adobe Premiere Pro (other editing software)Stock video, photos, etc.
5. capture for futureNow that you’re on set, try to follow the shot list based on your storyboard...and then shoot more. You can always use the extra broll. Or plan for additional videos (or social versions).

This sample is a good example of a video that can be done internally or with a small crew.
Challenges: Reluctant on-screen talent. Run-n-gun shooting. Small budget. One day in and out on their schedule.

find your inspiration
Gather ideas:
Once you know what story you are trying to tell, find your inspiration.
Start on Youtube or Vimeo. What are other people doing? What style inspires you? This will also help set the tone of the video.
Look outside the box. Find videos that speak to you and incorporate something from that work into yours.
1
Write it Down Visualize Research
Write it down. The beginning, the
middle and the end. Think about
the main point you’re trying to
make.
Visualize the story in your mind.
Figure out what your story is
before you go out and shoot.
This is hard. But you have to
know who is going to tell the
story. A farmer? Someone from
the co-op? A narrator?
Do your research and have your
questions ready for the day(s) of
production.
2 write a script
3reach out to all involved
1Is everything on location up to your
standards? Is the location clean? Are the
appropriate logos on the trucks?
Uniforms?
2 3Communicate with the location. Make
sure everyone is aware you’re coming
and when. Have a meeting or a call.
Does your schedule align with your
subjects? Do they know what they’re
supposed to do for the shoot? Make
them comfortable.
