FIRST READING1 Samuel 3:3-10,19Samuel was lying in the sanctuary of the Lord, where the ark of God was, when the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ He answered, ‘Here I am.’ Then he ran to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, since you called me.’ Eli said, ‘I did not call. Go back and lie down.’ So he went and lay down. Once again the Lord called, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, since you called me.’ He replied, ‘I did not call you, my son; go back and lie down.’ Samuel had as yet no knowledge of the Lord and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. Once again the Lord called, the third time. He got up and went to Eli and said, ‘Here I am, since you called me.’ Eli then understood that it was the Lord who was calling the boy, and he said to Samuel, ‘Go and lie down, and if someone calls say, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.”’ So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord then came and stood by, calling as he had done before, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Samuel answered, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’ Samuel grew up and the Lord was
with him and let no word of his fall to the ground.
RESPONSORIAL PSALMHere I am, Lord; I come to do your will
SECOND READING1 Corinthians 6:13-15,17-20The body is not meant for fornication: it is for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. God, who raised the Lord from the dead, will by his power raise us up too.
You know, surely, that your bodies are members making up the body of Christ; anyone who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
Keep away from fornication. All the other sins are committed outside the body; but to fornicate is to sin against your own body. Your body, you know, is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you since you received him from God. You are not your own property; you have been bought and paid for. That is why you should use your body for the glory of God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATIONAlleluia, alleluia! We have found the Messiah:Jesus Christ, who brings us truth and grace.

ST JOAN’S RENOVATION’S PROGRESS
REPORT
In November 2014 you were advised an Engi-
neering Consultant had been engaged to de-
velop Work Packages to address the recom-
mendations outlined in the Consultants initial
report. The packages were completed and
distributed to both local and city tradesper-
sons. Several quotes were received and re-
viewed by the Engineering Consultant and
members of the Finance Committee.
The following are the quotes recommended.
Internal preparation, repair and painting
of the church - $47,000.
Exterior painting, including bell tower,
hand-rails and wrought iron fence
$49,700.
Investigation of loft structure $796.
Plumbing testing $660
Earthworks including perimeter con-
crete paving adjacent to the church.
$17,560.
We are surprised by the Total Cost (excluding
GST) of $115,716.
As at the 31st December 2014 the parish reve-
nue at year-end was, $100,840 and operating
expense $111,771 resulting in a deficit of
($10,931). Extraordinary expenses in 2014
included, asbestos removal and roof repairs at
Victor Harbor, painting of St John’s Goolwa
and consultancy fees for this project, totaling
$20,000. While the cost of the project could
be realized over a five-year period, there is
very little leeway for unexpected expenses.
The committee is aware of the financial de-
mands on many families today, however it
would be remiss of us not to make you aware
of the current situation, as there may be some
parishioners and regular visitors, who would
welcome the opportunity to make a contribu-
tion to reinstating St Joan’s church to its for-
mer glory.
If you would like further information please do
not hesitate to contact Helen Taylor on 0448

MASS FOR YOU AT HOME
For those who might not be able to get to
Sunday Mass, maybe through illness or
incapacity, you can still hear Mass online
by logging on to the following website.
https://thesundaymass.org/
The Passionists of the St. Paul of the
Cross Province began their television
ministry in New York in December of
1970. From the first broadcast, The Sun-
day Mass was enthusiastically received
by the home bound and the infirm. Today,
hundreds of thousands now join in the
celebration of The Sunday Mass world-
wide via the internet.
ST. FRANCIS DE SALES FEAST DAY
24 JANUARY
Some thoughtful quotations from St.
Francis.
Have patience with all things. But,
first of all with yourself.
When you encounter difficulties
and contradictions, do not try to
break them, but bend them with
gentleness and time.
The bee collects honey from flow-
ers in such a way as to do the
least damage or destruction to
them, and he leaves them whole,
undamaged and fresh, just as he
found them.
True progress quietly and persis-
tently moves along without notice.
Make friends with the angels, who
though invisible are always with
you. Often invoke them, constant-
ly praise them, and make good
use of their help and assistance
in all your temporal and spiritual
affairs.
Nothing is so strong as gentle-
ness, nothing so gentle as real
strength.
By turning your eyes on God in
meditation, your whole soul will be
filled with God. Begin all your
prayers in the presence of God
When you encounter difficulties
and contradictions, do not try to
break them, but bend them with
gentleness and time.

ST AGNES FEAST DAY 21st JANUARY
Almost nothing is known of
this saint except that she
was very young -12 or 13 -
when she was martyred in
the last half of the third
century. Various modes of
death have been suggested - beheading,
burning, strangling.
Legend has it that Agnes was a beautiful
girl whom many young men wanted to
marry. Among those she refused, one
reported her to the authorities for being a
Christian. She was arrested and confined
to a house of prostitution.
Agnes was condemned, executed and
buried near Rome in a catacomb that
eventually was named after her. The
daughter of Constantine built a basilica in
her honour
WHAT SOME CHILDREN SAY
The Sunday School teacher was
describing that when Lot's wife looked
back at Sodom she turned into a pillar of
salt, when Bobby interrupted. "My mum-
my looked back once while she was driv-
ing," he announced, "and she turned into
a telephone pole."
Another Sunday School teacher said
to her children, "We have been learning
about how powerful the kings and queens
were in Biblical times. But there is a high-
er power. Who can tell me what it is?"
Tommy blurted out, "I know, Aces."
After explaining the commandment to
honour your father and mother, a Sunday
School teacher asked her class if there
was a commandment that teaches us
how to treat our brothers and sisters.
One boy, the oldest in his family, immedi-
ately answered, "Thou shalt not kill."
Lot again. A father was reading Bible
stories to his young son. He read, "The
man named Lot was warned to take his
wife and flee out of the city, but his wife
looked back and was turned into a pillar
of salt." His son asked, "What happened
to the flea?”

GOSPELJohn 1:35-42As John stood with two of his disciples, Jesus passed, and John stared hard at him and said, ‘Look, there is the lamb of God.’ Hearing this, the two disciples followed Jesus. Jesus turned round, saw them following and said, ‘What do you want?’ They answered, ‘Rabbi,’ – which means Teacher –’where do you live?’ ‘Come and see’ he replied; so they went and saw where he lived, and stayed with him the rest of that day. It was about the tenth hour.
One of these two who became followers of Jesus after hearing what John had said was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Early next morning, Andrew met his brother and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ – which means the Christ – and he took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked hard at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John; you are to be called Cephas’ – meaning Rock.
EVANGELII GAUDIUM “Sometimes it is a matter of hearing the cry of entire peoples, the poorest people of the earth...we must never forget that the planet belongs to all mankind and is meant for all mankind; the mere fact that some people are born in places with fewer resources or less development does not justify the fact that they are living with less dignity...We need to grow in a solidarity which ‘would allow all peoples to become artisans of their own destiny’, since every person is called to self-fulfilment.”
Para 190 from Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis, Nov. 24, 2013
FEAST DAY OF THE WEEKSt Fabian, (January 20)
Fabian was a Roman layman who came into the city from his farm one day as clergy and people were preparing to elect a new pope. Eusebius, a Church historian, says a dove flew in and settled on the head of Fabian. This sign united the votes of clergy and laity, and he was chosen unanimously.
He led the Church for 14 years and died a martyr’s death during the persecution of Decius in 250 AD. St
(Continued from page 1) Cyprian wrote to his successor that Fabian was an ‘incomparable’ man whose glory in death matched the holiness and purity of his life.
In the catacombs of St Callistus, the stone that covered Fabian’s grave may still be seen, broken into four pieces, bearing the Greek words, ‘Fabian, bishop, martyr.”
AS DISCIPLES, WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO ‘COME AND SEE’
“...the Saviour has a personal call for each one of us to become his ‘disciple’... It is important that we seek that incomparable intimacy with the Saviour that is our birthright through baptism – not relating to him as a remote figure, but confidently sharing our lives, in all their complex tangles, with him. Today’s story of the two disciples encourages this trust and confidence. Encouraged by the Baptist, they approached Jesus; he gave them a warm welcome – ‘Come and see;’ and they spent the rest of the day with him.” Fr John Thornhill
PRAYERS OF THE SAINTS“O gracious and holy one, give us the wisdom to perceive you, intelligence to understand you, diligence to seek you, patience to wait for you, eyes to behold you, a heart to meditate on you and a life to proclaim you.”
St Benedict of Nursia, the founder of the Benedictine Order
