ובני ישראל הלכו ביבשה בתוך הים " )טו:יט(“
" And the Children of Israel walked on dry land inside the sea.”
(15:19) The moment before Keriat Yam Suf must have been a very nerve rack-
ing experience. We tend to forget that prior to the greatest miracle of
all time, the Jewish people were frightened beyond belief as to what
their future held. What do you think you would have been going
through?
There’s a gemara in Masechet Pesahim 118 that needs some explana-
tion. It writes that the sustenance of man is as difficult as the splitting
of the sea.” Furthermore, another gemara in Masechet Sota 2b writes
that the combining of a man and a woman (for marriage) is as difficult
as the splitting of the sea.” The sages ask the obvious question: What
is the connection between these two elements of life - sustenance and
matrimony - to keriat yam suf? Why are these specific items listed in
comparison to the splitting of the sea?
Rav Bunim from Peshisha explains that the Jews faced a massive dille-
ma. On one side there were the ruthless Egyptians chasing them and
on the other side, you had the sea. After seeing the ten plagues in mi-
raculous fashion, the Jews were probably expecting something grand in
nature as a salvation, that would either cause the Egyptians to flee or
maybe pelt them with some Heavenly matter; almost like Sedom and
Amora. However, witnessing the sea split into 12 separate paths so
that each tribe can walk together, was something that was certainly not
on their minds.
This is the uniqueness of parnasa and zivug (sustenance and mar-
riage). “Man plans and God laughs.” Man prepares the most extrava-
gant ideas how to make money or how/when he’s going to find a life
partner. He thinks it’s that easy but little does he know that one flaw in
his strategy can alter things completely. More often than not, a per-
son’s yeshua (salvation) in any matter will come totally from left field;
from a circumstance that you thought would never be possible. How
many stories have we heard of husbands and wives meeting in the
most spectacular fashion? How many times have we heard of a person
make enormous amounts of money from an idea that he never thought
would take off? These unexpected turn of events symbolize exactly
what took place when the Jews stood face to face with the sea; a mag-
nificent event that changed the course of history but that came entirely
unpredicted.
Is It Permissible to Add Hot Water to Instant Soup Mixes on
Shabbat?
The question arises whether it is permissible to add hot water to in-
stant soup mixes on Shabbat. While, of course, it is prohibited to cook
on Shabbat, can the principle of “En Bishul Ahar Bishul” (there is no
prohibition to cook a food which has already been cooked) be applied,
since the ingredients of the soup mix may already be cooked and then
freeze-dried?
Hacham David (Halacha Berura, Hilchot Shabbat p. 485-Refer to Audio
for Hebrew Quote) writes that that even if many ingredients were
cooked, there may be some minor ingredients, such as spices, which
remain raw. Pouring hot water on them would constitute Bishul. The
process differs between different manufacturers. Therefore, one may
not be lenient unless he verifies with certainty that ALL the ingredients
were previously FULLY cooked.
Moreover, even if all the ingredients were fully cooked, it is possible to
argue that the principle of “En Bishul Ahar Bishul” would not apply,
since, in this case, the cooked ingredients need the hot water to be-
come edible as soup. Thus, the second “cooking” has an impact and
may be prohibited.
It may even be prohibited to use hot water from a Keli Sheni, as these
ingredients could constitute “Kaleh Bishul”-easily cooked items, similar
to tea leaves, in which the water from the Keli Sheni is just as effective
as water from a Keli Rishon.
Nevertheless, Hacham David does permit pouring hot water from a Keli
Shlishi on to any soup mix, as the Halacha established that Keli Shlishi
never cooks. This means, one may pour hot water from the urn (Keli
Rishon) into a cup (Keli Sheni) and then from that cup into a different
cup (Keli Shlishi) and pour the mix into that cup. It is also permitted to
pour directly from the Keli Sheni onto the soup mix; this is equivalent
to Keli Shlishi.
SUMMARY
One may not prepare instant soup mixes with hot water in a Keli
Rishon or Keli Sheni on Shabbat, but he may do so with a Keli Shlishi.
Tu Bishebat
The 15th of Shebat is a festive day, counted as one of the four new
years of Jewish calendar. Tu Bishebat is the New Year for the trees.
The reason for this new year is due to the fact that many laws exist
concerning either when one may eat the fruit of a tree one has planted
or because of the various offerings a Jew must take up to Yerushalyim
from the fruit of his trees and it even concerns the seventh sabbatical
year in which the land rests. Being that many of these laws pertain to
the fruit of each year individually, it is necessary that we know when
the trees begin their new year. To define and clarify this, the Hacha-
mim inform us that any fruit that has blossomed before the 15th of
Shebat is considered from the previous year, and after Tu Bishebat, it
constitutes the fruit of the current year.
As in Rosh Hashanah, the New Year for the humans, these are judged
and their future decided on that day for the coming year, so happens
in the New Year for the trees. On the day of Tu Bishebat, Hashem
draws the future of the fruit of the trees, on the day He decrees its
quantities and qualities. For this reason, we make the “Seder of Tu
Bishebat”, when a Beracha is said on every possible fruit, while we pray
for the fruitful reproduction of each tree according to its specimen, as
the fruit is necessary for man’s sustenance.
On Tu Bishebat, we especially mention the fruit of the land of Israel,
with which it was blessed and priority is given to these fruits, to show
our love for the land of Israel and our longing to return to it with the
same blessings that the land enjoyed and was characterized with in
ancient times.
