e Pre-launch of the first vintage of Viña Errázuriz’s top-end Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Aconcagua Costa has caught the attention of the international wine critics.

Errázuriz chief winemaker Francisco Baettig explained that this wine follows a Burgundian approach to labelling, therefore was named after the dominant soil in the vineyard: Las Pizarras (a type of metamorphic rocks called slate). He said, “We wanted to do something like you have in Burgundy, where the name of the wine is related to the place, the terroir, not just a fantasy name.”

e wine was made with the support of both a Burgundian consultant winemaker and geolo-gist. e highly respected geologist Françoise Vannier-Petit created a detailed map of the Aconcagua Costa estate’s soils, just as she did for Chambolle-Musigny. “By mapping the

e past year has seen two major trends in Chile’s sparkling wine market. Production grew 21% over the previous year, and the demand for Premium products increased significantly. Driven by these market trends and Viña Errázuirz’s winemaking team constant innovation, the winery is prepar-ing to launch its first sparkling wine, which is currently aging on its lees. Eduardo Chadwick stated that “ere will be 100 cases of top quality sparkling wine” made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines from Aconcagua Costa.

vineyards we have been able to identify areas that will give us different styles,” Francisco explained. “e vineyards in the upper part of the region produce a drier, more mineral character, whereas at the bottom end you get a richer, bigger, more fruit-driven style.”

For the Las Pizarras 2014 vintage, which is due to be launched on 2016, there are just 280 cases of Chardonnay and 300 of Pinot Noir available.

For the last 12 years Jancis Robinson has hosted a gala wine dinner in London to raise funds for Room to Read, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and enabling education through programs focused on literacy in the third world.

is year’s event followed closely after her last trip to Chile in February, so she invited the highest-rated Chilean wines from her visit to participate. In her special selection of five wines for the dinner, Jancis chose the 2013 Aconcagua Costa Chardonnay for the first course.

Jancis had previously ranked this wine at 17 points and commented that it was “Very firm and cool and lively. Lots to chew on and surely a suggestion of the schist here?! So clean, fresh and transparent. So lively.”
