A note from Dr. Susan Ehrlich, CEO
During COVID times, change is the only constant
This morning I was greeted with a new sign at the entrance to Glen Canyon Park. Instead of
what I’d seen for weeks now: “Stay Six Feet Apart, Exercise Alone not Together,” the sign said,
“Open Safely Together.” A new sign for a new phase that starts today, June 15th, when we enter
a new reopening gate that will change our lives yet again, hopefully for the better.
San Francisco’s COVID data should make us feel confident about moving through this gate. As a
result of our strong public health leadership, SF’s numbers put us in a great place relative to
other cities, with 3.2 cases/1000 and 5.1 deaths/100,000. Notably, we’ve had 5-fold fewer
deaths/100,000 than the next closest municipality, Seattle, at 25.7, and 50-fold fewer than New
York City, at 261/100,000.
Today, opening safely together means we can eat at outdoor restaurants, shop in retail stores,
kids can go to small summer camps, and more. Keeping safe means all these businesses will
have to develop and implement plans to minimize infection risk. Each of us has an important
role to play, by wearing face coverings, staying at least six feet apart, sanitizing/washing our
hands frequently.
How will we know it’s no longer safe to keep opening up? SF has a road map for that, as well.
After much study and consideration, the City has chosen seven metrics in three categories --
disease situation, health care system, and disease control -- that we’ll be watching closely to
understand what’s happening with COVID in the community, three of which will guide us to
change course if things get worse:
• Rate of increase in total COVID+ hospitalizations;
• Acute care bed available capacity; and
• ICU bed available capacity
Fortunately, these indicators are all “green” right now, because across all hospitals in SF
hospitalizations are decreasing and capacity is available.
Hospitals, including ZSFG, clearly have an important role to play. The next reopening gate hits on
July 15th, four weeks from now. Between now and then, we at ZSFG will be reopening our
services slowly and cautiously, and with the knowledge that at any time we may need to change
course and limit services more substantially for non-COVID patients, to create capacity for
patients with COVID disease.
When change is the only constant, it is unsettling. Following the 1989 earthquake in SF, I was
working in City Hall. There were aftershocks nearly every day, and we would watch the plaster
fall off the walls around us with each one. We never knew if the aftershock we felt was going to
be another “big one.” This is like that in some ways. Totally unnerving.
How do we get through it? By taking care of ourselves. By being kind to one another. By
tapping into our own resilience, patience, creativity and compassion. By keeping our eyes on
what’s most important at work, and our own ZSFG True North: equity, safety, quality, care
experience, developing our people, financial stewardship.
Have a great week, everyone. Together, we will get through this as we always do, better than
before –
Susan
