Congrats to Dean Anja Geitmann who has beennamed the Canada Research Chair inBiomechanics of Plant Development and toProfessor Sarah Kimmins, the Canada ResearchChair in Epigenetics, on the renewal of her Chair. The announcement was made last Friday by theHonorable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science.Over $173 million in funding was awarded for 203new and renewed Canada Research Chairs atuniversities across Canada. $9.6M project funded through Genome Canadacompetition for natural resource, environmentsectors. An interdisciplinary McGill team led byProf. Nil Basu of the Department of NaturalResource Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculturaland Environmental Sciences, in collaboration withcolleagues at the University of Saskatchewan andEnvironment and Climate Change Canada as wellas a series of industrial partners, is working on agenomicsbased tool for assessing the effects ofchemicals on a range of fish, birds andamphibians. A major strength of the team, whichincludes Prof. Jessica Head and Prof. GordonHickey (also from Natural Resource Sciences),Prof. Jianguo Xia (Animal Science/Institute ofParasitology), and Prof. Steve Maguire(Desautels Faculty of Management), is itsdiversity and breadth of expertise. Mac Woodsmen are having a breakout season,with the women winning both of their fallcompetitions, putting them at the top of the sixteam Canadian Intercollegiate LumberjackAssociation (CILA). Showing prowess with theiraxes and saws not to mention teamwork and aseries of solid individual performances, thewomen are on track to sweep the 201617season. The men are third in a competitive field thatincludes perennial powerhouse Dalhousie alongwith Maritime College, UNB, Fleming andAlgonquin Colleges. The team shows potential toclimb up in the standings and are excited to showoff their skills at the Mac WoodsmenCompetition taking place on campus January28, 2017. The annual event brings in teams fromthe US and Canada and is an exciting showcaseof skill, speed, strength and strategy. Photos were evaluated by a jury, andmore than 250 faculty, staff, and studentsweighed in on their favorites. First place wasawarded to Megan McFaul, Derek Oliver placedsecond, and Ketsia Croteau placed third. In thePeople's Choice awards, first place was awardedto Justin Bohemen, with photos taken by KetsiaCroteau and Josee Bourdon placing second andthird respectively. Congratulations.
