Director’s Message

The Fountainhead of InnovationThe Indian Institute of Technology @ Kharagpur has been the pioneer in providing thoughtleadership in the educational sector in India. Forged on the anvil of post-independence urgency tocreate a launching pad for India’s tryst with the world of high technology, it initiated the con versionof swords into plowshares by transforming the Hijli Detention Camp – a much maligned symbol ofcolonial tyranny – into a crucible that kindles the spirit of enquiry and enterprise in young men andwomen who have since gone on to guide the destinies of companies, institutions and governmentsall across the world.

In India, IIT Kharagpur has gone where no other engineering school has gone before – first intomanagement education, with the Vinod Gupta School of Management in 1993, then into law withthe Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law in 2006 and will now be launching a medicalschool in the very near future. Such innovations are essential to address the complex challengesthat are thrown up when an ancient yet evergreen nation evolves into a modern state that can fulfillthe aspirations of its young population. It is a matter of pride for us that the Institute is nowrecognized as the fountainhead from which has emerged what is arguably the most well knownIndian brand and whose ambassadors carry the spirit of the Indian tri-colour to every corner of theplanet.

It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you all to this fountainhead, our campus, and lookforward to building mutually rewarding relationship.

Jai Hind

The Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM), IIT Kharagpur, was set up in 1993 with a $2-millionendowment from a Mr. Vinod Gupta- distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. The mission of the school isto provide future business leaders with the ability to understand and leverage the advantages oftechnology for managing successful businesses in the knowledge driven era. IIT Kharagpur, the oldest, thelargest and the most diversified of all the IITs, is currently rated as the best among them. It has a vastreservoir of knowledge and expertise in the highest realm of learning in science, engineering andtechnology. All this is available to VGSOM students in the form of elective and audit courses.

The high quality, two-year full-time residential Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmeoffered by this B-school strikes an innovative balance between theory and practice of management. Thisprogramme provides for eight weeks of summer training in industry after the first year.

The friendly atmosphere, the small class groups and the informal interaction of students and faculty createa unique learning experience that generates both breadth and depth to the personalized learning process. With this, the outgoing students are confident of having had the best of management education in thecountry.

In the recent past, the school has grown significantly in strength with the infrastructure, the computerlaboratory and the core faculty strength. Also, a five-year dual degree course in Engineering (B.Tech) andManagement (MBA) with admission through the JEE has been put in place. Very shortly, foreign studentswill be admitted, thereby facilitating cross-cultural experiences among our student community. New vistasof management education have been opened up with MBA programme for defense personnel, andexecutive MBA programme for in-company executives. We constantly endeavour to use these advantages

and build a strong foundation so that in the years to come we can be proud of our alumni as the pillars onwhich the future shape and structure of our school was built.

We at VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur believe in forging a fruitful, long-term relationship with the business world aswell as our students.
