Priority of Service (11h)On November 2, 2002, the Jobs for Veterans Act was signed and became Public Law 107-288, which creates a priority of service for Veterans (and some spouses)

“who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for participation” in all Department of Labor funded training programs.

Job Training and Education Veterans may qualify for a scholarship or tuition assistance for re-training into a

new field or upgrade their current skills to improve their marketability.

Placement ServicesThe Veterans Representative can assist in securing an interview with a potential

employer by matching skills to the needs of an established network of employers in their local area.

Job Referrals

Veterans always receive top-priority in job referrals. That means veterans will learn about available jobs before the rest of the job-seeking public.

Unemployment Insurance (15c)BackgroundBackground

• The government requires employers to buy unemployment insurance for their employees. This insurance provides a cushion for employees who lose their jobs.

• It’s insurance, not a handout.• Your employer (Military) paid for this insurance,

so don’t be embarrassed about signing up.

Unemployment Insurance

The Unemployment Compensation for Ex-Servicemembers (UCX) program provides benefits for eligible ex-military personnel. The program is administered by the States as agents of the Federal government.

• If you were on active duty with a branch of the U.S. military, you may be entitled to benefits based on that service.

• You must have been separated under honorable conditions.

There is no payroll deduction from the service member's wages for unemployment insurance protection. Benefits are paid for by the various branches of the military.

Receiving separation pay may also influence your receipt of unemployment compensation. (Retirees will almost certainly receive a lesser amount [or no amount] since the weekly amount of retirement pay is usually "offset" against

the amount of unemployment compensation.)

Should a separating service member apply for compensation, the law of the State under which the claim is filed determines:

- benefit amounts

- number of weeks benefits can be paid

- other eligibility conditions
