Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veter-ans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a nar-row focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to ad-dress a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from lead-ers of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publica-tion with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing [email protected] or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

Bow Shop in Stuart. Later, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Department set up a firing range. The boys had target practice and watched demonstrations by snipers and the K-9 Unit. “(Former Rep.) Allen West came

out on Saturday and shot with the boys,” Baldwin said. “On Saturday night, Pastor Tom Mullins of Christ Fellowship Church came out and we had a campfire. It was pretty laid back. Everyone was tired. It was a pretty packed day.”On Sunday, the group went to

church. When they returned, one of the volunteer mentors gave instructions in using a com-pass and set up a course for the boys to navigate. Then they had more practice in archery and an archery competition. After closing ceremonies, each

boy received a gift, an auto-graphed copy of Steven Press-field’s book, “Gates of Fire,” about the Spartans and the Bat-tle of Thermopylae. It was one of Aaron Vaughn’s favorite books. The name of the nonprofit,

Operation 300, is taken from the story of how 300 Spartans held off the much larger Persian army for several days at that famous battle.

As a special token, Mr. Press-field personalized each of the books with a message to the camper about his dad.“Giving the books got to me,”

Baldwin said. “’Gates of Fire’ was my brother’s favorite book. He gave it to me 10 years ago and I still have it.”Campers, mentors and moms

all agreed that the weekend was a success.“Several of the moms couldn’t

imagine it going better,” Baldwin said. “They said it was exactly what (their kids) needed. They wished it could have been longer and all said they’d be back next

Baldwin is not resting on her laurels. She hopes to have

another camp in the fall, but it is expensive to feed campers, provide accommodations for moms and pay the other ex-

penses. In addition, she hopes to raise money to get at least

one building of their own.“We all said it would be eas-ier to get one building with air-conditioning to put bunk beds. It would be nice to ac-commodate 10-12 bunk beds. We’d love to have materials

and construction donated. It’s a work in progress.”

nizer Vanessa Smolen had no idea how far it would go. “We had about 1,000 people at

the event,” she said. “It was phe-nomenal.” Among them, a Hobe Sound

man with an unusual rope with hundreds of American flags gath-ered from the roadsides since

the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 — Tom Fucigna. The hundreds showed up at the

West Palm Beach International Airport on Saturday, April 27, to welcome home World War II vet-erans arriving from that latest Honor Flight of Southeast Flori-da trip. Operation Homecoming is a new part of local hub’s efforts to honor the veterans.

Baldwin said. In the long term, Baldwin hopes the camp will have its own land,

preferably in Martin County. “We would love to have 50 acres, but we could do it on 25,” she

said. Donations are welcome for this project as well as for the next camp. “Donations let us do everything we needed to do,” Baldwin said.

“For what we were able to accomplish with what we had, I was very, very pleased.” So, it seems, were nine boys who just got to be kids.

Smolen’s husband, Keith, was on the flight with the veterans. Af-ter volunteering on three flights, Keith thought he’d grown accus-tomed to the emotions the Hon-or Flight generates. But, he said when the veterans realized that they’d end their day by walking through a 500-foot aisle about 10 people deep of well-wishers, emo-tions went off the chart. “It was totally overwhelming,” he

said. “Tears of joy. They were sob-bing from happiness. It was total-ly overwhelming. I could tell you I was sobbing with joy. I did not expect that at all. I knew it would be big because Vanessa has been busting her butt getting (Oper-ation Homecoming) going, but I didn’t expect it to be that big.” A recent local screening of “Hon-

or Flight” inspired the local Project Homecoming. Smolen was instru-mental in getting four January showings of the documentary at Carmike Cinema 14, 1900 N.W. Courtyard Circle, Port St. Lucie. She said the documentary showed thousands of Wisconsinites turn-ing out to greet their returning veterans. “It was so huge, we thought it

was Photoshopped or something,

or they put a call out and said, ‘We’re making this movie,’” Va-nessa said in a previous inter-view. “But, no. That’s how many always turn out for the veterans in Wisconsin. It was overwhelming to see the amount of people who came out.” So she got to work getting as

many out to greet the returning Florida veterans as she could. Va-nessa said after a Veteran Voice article ran about Operation Home-coming, things got busy. She said other media contacted her for stories, along with dozens of im-promptu volunteers. Come the day of Operation Home-

coming, Vanessa was feeling over-whelmed with organizing tasks. But she got a surprise.“Someone came to me, and said

‘Someone has flags,’” she said. “Honestly, at that point I was like, ‘Ugh.’” Nevertheless, she met with Fucig-

na. “He starts to show me a duffle bag

of flags,” Vanessa said. “They were all on this rope. He said, ‘These flags are flags I’ve been picking up from roadways since 9/11.’” In an e-mail, Fucigna explained

how he got started collecting flags from roadways.

“During the months after Sept. 11, 2001, in the wake of a wave of patriotism that resulted in many people flying the flag, I retrieved from the roadside over 600 Amer-ican flags that had fallen from cars. Most were small ‘car flags,’ but I also found a handful of full-sized flags. I picked them up be-cause I didn’t think it was right for them to be laying in the gutter, and because I consider them to be memorials to the victims of 9/11, including friends and relatives of our family lost at the Twin Tow-ers.” He went on to say, “Many of the

flags were in tatters, and I proper-ly disposed of them, but over 200 were in good shape, so I cleaned them up and strung them togeth-er. Those 250 feet of flags have been displayed along our main street in Hobe Sound from dawn to dusk every Sept. 11 since then. They also surround our Civic Cen-ter every year for our local Fourth of July gathering, where we also display memorial flags from my great uncle and father-in-law, who served in the Navy and Ma-rine Corps in World War II.” Fucigna wasn’t available for an

interview by press time. The Honor Flight Network is a

national program that takes World War II veterans to see the memo-

rial dedicated to them on the Na-tional Mall in Washington, D.C. It was erected in 2004. The honor flights began, almost by accident, a year later.

The flight will arrive at the West Palm Beach International Airport at 7:50 p.m. For information about partic-ipating in Operation Homecoming, call Vanessa at (772) 834-9340.

Plaques commemorate nation’s 12 major military engagements and those lost in them

The 13 plaques are now there, but the Veterans Council of Martin County will ceremonially unveil them on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. “We feel that the younger gener-

ation today really knows nothing about all these wars we partici-pated in — this is the freedom we have here in the United States,” Morris Schtupak, commander the Jewish War Veterans Post 549, Stuart, said. Stuart’s Memorial Park, 300 S.E.

Ocean Blvd, underwent a $1.9 million complete redesign in 2011 with funding from its Commu-nity Redevelopment Agency and grants. Among the changes was the addition of a memorial wall honoring those who died in the nation’s wars. Bruce Millette, council chair, said an existing memorial at the park created a small conundrum. “There was one plaque in the

park previously, which was the Korean War,” he said. “We came up with this idea for a plaque for every war, every major conflict our country has been involved in.” The council hit on the idea of

adding commemorative plaques honoring the service of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in all the nation’s wars on arranged pedestals. The city of Stuart liked the idea and installed the pedes-tals to place the plaques upon. But, the council was on the hook for getting the other 12 plaques. That, it turned out, wasn’t going

to be cheap. “Each plaque was $1,000,”

Tony Reese, supervisor of Martin County’s veterans services office, said. “Plus, we had to pay for the donor plates, so $1,100 (each).”Or a bit more than $13,000. The

council was thinking it’d be a lot more than that, and started the fundraising about six months ago. “We were thinking it was prob-

ably a two-year project,” Reese said. “One thing led to another, and we got the right trophy shop to help us get them made.” That was Crown Trophy in Stu-

art. “When I heard the pricing they

got before, it was crazy,” owner Brian Funk said. “It was up-ward to $1,000 more a plaque. I thought it was crazy.”Funk discounted the council’s

way into affordability as a word-of-mouth campaign raised dol-lars. “I just felt it was important and

it’s a beautiful park; it’s a new park,” Funk said. “I worked with (Reese) on a few other projects and he’s great to work with. I still made money, don’t get me wrong.” Schtupak said the council iden-

tified what it felt could be count-ed as America’s major military engagements, ranging from those that are universally popular,

such as the Revolutionary War and World War II, to those that many question, such as the Indian Wars and Vietnam. But Schtupak said the Jewish War Vet-

erans felt something was missing — a mention of those captured by enemies and missing in action. “We did not see anything for the MIAs,

POWs,” he said. “We spoke to the council about doing something for the MIAs and POWs. This is what got them the idea. We pursued this by asking where are the POW/MIAs?” Thus, the 13th plaque noting POW/MIAs. The pedestals and plaques are arranged

in calendared sequence, starting with the Revolutionary War on the southwest and going counterclockwise in a rectangle to the Global War on Terrorism on the southeast. Millette said that arrangement was a mat-ter of park design and carries no particular meaning. The number of plaques, too, is a matter of history, not symbolism. The council’s annual Memorial

Day parade will start at 10 a.m. at High School Avenue, on East Ocean Boulevard. The parade will go to Memorial Park, where at 11 a.m. the plaques will be ceremo-nially unveiled and dedicated. For information, about the Veter-

ans Council of Martin County, visit vetcouncilmc.org, or call Reese at (772) 288-5448. For more on the parade, visit stuartparades.com, or contact Jim Riordan at (772) 220-4127.
