Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veter-ans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a nar-row focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community. The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public. Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to ad-dress a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public. To our knowledge, and based on comments from lead-ers of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice. We hope you agree, and will support this publica-tion with your subscription. Without subscriptions there will be a limited number of people we can help, without which this mission will not be realized. As part of our commitment to supporting local veteran communities, we will donate 10 percent of our profits each quarter to qualified veteran charities recommended by you, our readers and subscribers. Please let us know what you think by emailing [email protected] or mailing your comments to us at 1919 S.W. South Macedo Blvd., Port St. Lucie, FL 34984.

There’re a lot of benefits to quit-ting smoking — turns out that growing a post might be one. “We went non-smoking,” Dar-

yl Bowie, commander of the American Legion Post 318, said. “Non-smoking has really, really made a difference toward mem-bership growth.” He later added, “We’re at 2,000

members now.” Last year, about this time, Bowie

— who’s a non-smoker, but uses tobacco — put membership at around 900. Both numbers are for legionnaires, and don’t include the American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion members. “We’re up 130 percent over last

year for our legionnaires,” Bowie said. The post recently moved into

a new building it constructed. There will be a grand opening ceremony for the 6,300-square-foot building on Sunday, April 27. The post is now at 1000 Sava-nah Club Blvd., Port St. Lucie. The ceremonies will start at 11 a.m. Members of 318 can attend for free. Other legionnaires and guests will be $6. Lunch will fol-low the ceremonies, then there’ll be live music. Bowie said a few months ago,

folks brought up the idea of mak-

ing the new building smoke free. Others proposed allowing smok-ing only at the post’s bar. Bowie said that about 120 voted for smoke-free, and 30 for alterna-tives that allowed indoor smoking. “There’re still some people who

are not happy with that outcome,” Bowie said. However, he said there’s been

a dramatic increase in the num-ber of folks attending events and spending time at the post. Bow-ie said many attribute it to the smoke-free atmosphere. Smokers are allowed to light up on a patio. Bowie said the post is adding more roof over it to accommodate them. Tom “Tom Tom” Belford, the

post’s historian, said many of the folks who are joining, or attending post events, are younger, “We have a lot of people who

are veterans and came in and couldn’t take the smoke in the old building,” He is a lifelong non-smoker.

Belford said he tried smoking once when he was doing a tour in Vietnam. He described it as “disgusting.” “I find that (second-hand smoke)

does bother me,” he said. “It seems to find me. If someone is smoking, it finds its way to me.” According to the Department of

Veterans Affairs’ website, www.va.gov, those receiving health

No leg? No problem — future flyer-vet isn’t slowing down

It was on Mother’s Day — May 8, 2011 — that Tommy Counihan IV was on IED clearance patrol and got hit by one of the very devices his unit was charged with de-stroying.“My foot felt hot and wet,” he

said. “When I cleared off the de-bris, I could see my toes coming out of my boot. I thought, ‘Holy crap.’”Formerly of Fort Pierce, the

23-year-old served as an Army corporal in the 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Polk, La., from 2009 to 2012.Counihan’s job, along with five

others in his unit, was to clear IEDs from roadways used by troop and supply vehicles. Unfor-tunately for him, but fortunately for the others, he was the only one seriously injured. After making the decision him-

self to have his leg amputated — “They could have saved a sliver of my foot, but it would have taken too many surgeries, too much time” — he returned to the U.S. and to family, remaining at loose ends for a long time before decid-ing where to go from there. But whether Counihan found

flying, or it found him, he now has a very bright future ahead.

Thanks to his new position with Renegade Light Sport, DeLand, he’s learning to fly, but it won’t

end there. He’s going to be the coordinator

of Renegade’s Broken Wing Proj-ect, which seeks to teach other wounded warriors to become pilots or mechanics, or both.Counihan is tall and slim, quiet

but with a ready sense of humor. He walks easily on his prosthet-ic leg. If he gives the impression that he’s an athletic guy, it’s be-cause he always has been — and still is.“There’s nothing I can’t do,” he

said. “Rock-climbing, surfing — if someone says I can’t do some-thing, I’ll do it just to prove them wrong.”At the hangar in DeLand, where

Counihan is currently working on light-sport plane engines and equipping planes with special gear for amputees, among other tasks while waiting to begin flight training, he is followed every-where by his “best buddy,” Mary Jane, a French bulldog, who “bosses everyone around.”It’s clear Counihan has found

his niche at last, an inseparable member of a small and tight-knit team at Renegade (headed by Christopher “Doc” Bailey, the subject of a previous article in Veteran Voice). But it was a lengthy road to get

there.

“There’s nothing I can’t do. Rock-climbing, surfing — if

someone says I can’t do some-thing, I’ll do it just to prove

them wrong.”Tommy Counihan IV, amputee

veteran and flight instructor in training

When Counihan was discharged in June 2012, he initially worked for his dad, Tommy Counihan III, who owns and operates Cra-zy Coun’s Construction Corp., specializing in custom-designed stairways throughout south Flori-da. But he was restless. He moved to Fort Myers with his

girlfriend and enrolled in Edison State College, “but I pretty much saw it wasn’t for me,” he said.Counihan said he’d always had

an interest in learning to fly, but soon learned how frustrating it could be for someone in his situ-ation. Then “Doc” came into the picture.“I met Doc through a neighbor,

Jim Napier,” he said. “He’s a Desert Storm vet who lost his left arm and leg. He had found out about Doc (and the Broken Wing

care through its medical centers have an above-average rate of smoking. However, Veteran Voice was unable to get more specific information at press time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 42 million adults in the United States are regular smokers. The majority are men. The centers also report that from 2005 to 2012, the adult smoking rate de-clined from about 21 to just over 18 percent. Some of that can be attributed

to death rates. About 440,000 to 480,000 cigarette smokers die prematurely due to smok-ing-related health issues a day. Young people are increasingly abstaining from starting tobacco use, although there’s evidence some may be opting instead for electronic, or “e-“ cigarettes. E-cigarettes have nicotine, which is addictive in all forms, but not tobacco. The nicotine is delivered through vaporizing liquid. Smokers are quitting tobacco

at an ever-increasing pace, too, although some may instead be opting for e-cigarettes, which don’t have the unpleasant smell of traditional tobacco. The centers report that for more than a de-cade there have been more former than current smokers in the na-

tion. Smoking, however, remains the leading cause of preventable premature death. The VA reports that about 70 percent of smokers surveyed say they want to quit. The VA has many helps available

to smoking veterans who wish to quit. Information about them is at

www.myhealth.va.gov. Bowie said that others are

watching what’s happening in Port St. Lucie.“We’re now the eighth-largest

American Legion post in Florida,” he said. “We’ve moved up quite rapidly.” He added, “I think there

are a lot of posts looking at this. A lot are looking at us now and seeing how it’s going.” In addition to celebrating the

opening of the post’s new facility, 318 is also celebrating its 30th an-niversary. Information about it is at www.americanlegion318fl.org.

That’s New York to Los Ange-les 15 times, by the way. They noticed a pattern developing. The couple kept returning to Patrick Air Force Base to stay at a camp-ground there. They decided to put roots down on the Space Coast in 2007.“Honest to God, it was the

weather,” Cone said. “It just agrees with my body.” Cone was in the Air Force from

1980 to 1987. “I was a buck sergeant,” he said.

“I got medically discharged, be-cause of my injury.” Cone was hurt while preparing

aircraft for 1983’s Operation Ur-gent Fury, Grenada. After getting discharged, Cone took his per-suasive personality into corporate marketing for a while. But that just wasn’t doing it for him. “I went to work being a veterans

advocate,” Cone said. Cone was a national service

officer for the Disabled American Veterans representing folks to the Board of Veterans Appeals. In addition to that advocacy work, Cone co-founded a local veterans organization in San Diego. After moving to the Space Coast,

the Cones decided to revitalize their dream for the AVET Proj-ect, which they’d been starting in Oregon back in 2000. Like many organizations, AVET Project sends care packages to service members overseas, among other things. The boxes have many of the usual offerings care-package groups include, such as toilet-ries, socks, snacks. However, the AVET Project boxes head out with some things most don’t include: relaxation and meditation in-structional CDs, for example. Additionally, remember that

Cone was a national service offi-cer? Those care packages also in-clude instructions on how to keep good journal notes that could come in handy someday.

“We teach (service members) how to journal, which will ground their claims with the (Department of Veterans Affairs) if an injury becomes a disability,” Cone said in a previous interview. “When the VA says, ‘Where’s the infor-mation?,’ they can go to their journals.”Cone’s infectious enthusiasm for

the AVET Project took some time to catch on, despite his gregari-ousness. “The organizations around

here, particularly in the veterans community, are very territorial,” he said. “They’re not receptive to new groups.”The Cones started helping exist-

ing groups, so folks got to know them. “You develop relationships,”

Cone said. “(We’re) getting in-volved in as many groups as we can to help foster good relation-ships to ease any fears that we were there to take over. It’s been a long journey. The reputation that AVET has earned — a lot of blood, sweat and tears. Nobody is getting a paycheck.” And, Cone has a knack for find-

ing resources where others often don’t think to look. “It’s amazing what we can do

with what little we get,” he said. “It’s corporate support (grants). That’s what keeps us afloat.”About four years ago, Cone

approached WMEL with the idea of doing American Warrior Radio. He’d done some radio hosting before. “I went to the (owners), and they

said, “Yeah, that sounds great.’” Glenn McGuffie, supervisor of

Brevard County’s veterans service office, co-hosts the show. Amer-ican Warrior Radio is on 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Episodes are archived on YouTube at the avetproject channel. To learn more about the AVET

Project, visit www.avetproject.org. More about American Warrior Ra-dio is at www.1300wmel.com.

VETERAN VOICE • THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE • APRIL 24, 2014 • 7

The Cascades of St. Lucie West has about 1,100 residents, hun-dreds of whom are veterans. When a veteran-themed memo-

rial display was recently moved, it sparked anger, and a series of exchanges between veteran resi-dents and members of the Resi-dential Association staff, with no resolution in sight.John Pescino, a resident for-

merly of Long Island, N.Y., and a Navy veteran of the Korean War, was outspoken on the issue. In the kitchen of his home, he

was joined by a fellow veteran, who did not wish his identity published, but who contributed to recounting the events.“About five or six months ago,

(the display) was taken down due to renovations that were being done,” Pescino said. “They moved everything to a corner in the library, where hardly anyone can see it. This was upsetting to me, and a lot of other veterans.”Previously, the display had been

located in a hallway that Pesci-no said received a great deal of traffic.“People’s grandkids would come

over and see it, and get excited: ‘Oh, there’s grandpa!’” Pescino said, noting that four plaques, which he called monuments, list-

ed each resident veteran’s name, living or deceased.“We’ve had prospective residents

see it, and they were impressed,”

he said. “And we’ve had guys say, ‘How can I get on?’”Wayne Smith, president of the

Residential Association, is also a veteran, having spent 11 years in the Army and Florida Army National Guard as an infantry captain.“In 2013, the board of direc-

tors voted to, after 11 years of use, wear and tear, upgrade and restore our clubhouse to a more up to date look,” Smith said in a

written response. “Our community has 1,158

homes, with a 25,000-square-foot clubhouse and many other ame-nities. These amenities and the clubhouse are considered ‘com-mon area.’ “Per our governing documents,

the seated board of directors is responsible for the affairs of the association, which includes ‘providing for the operation, care, upkeep, and maintenance of all of the common areas.’ “We began restoration with the

corridors, hired a designer to provide several alternatives, pre-sented these to the residents who voted on their choice. The corri-dors were completed in late 2013, and the lobby was completed in January 2014.“Additional areas are in different

stages of planning and execu-tion,” he stated, which includes the ongoing issue of where to place the memorial.Smith stated that a total of four

possible locations — two different corridors, its current location in the library and the ballroom — were offered and subsequently rejected.Pescino said the display, which

was paid for out of a former res-ident’s own pocket, stood in its original location for nine years; it was put up on Veterans Day,

Nov. 5, 2005, he said.He said he approached several

board members and asked why the display was moved, and was “never given a satisfactory an-swer,” he said. “One of them said it ‘didn’t go with the new décor,’ but when I pressed him on it, he wouldn’t answer.”Pescino said he signaled his dis-

pleasure to the governing board “by letter, voice, you name it,” and said he was told “no way are we going to move it.”Pescino said three board mem-

bers spoke to several residents and asked them to come to a meeting on April 3 to discuss the issue. “We were sitting there waiting (at

the community center) for quite a while,” he said. “Finally, (an) as-sistant property manager told us it was canceled.” He said he later found out the meeting was held, but at a board member’s home, which he said “I’ve never heard of happening.”Smith’s response included a

statement on the incident from one of the board members:“Three board members met and

discussed options, which a ma-jority agreed on. “Those options were presented to

(the Residential Association presi-

dent) for his consideration. “Because of the gravity of the

situation, I communicated with the president of the (Cascades of St. Lucie West) Men’s Club to see if they could talk to, or arrange a meeting with three or four of the veterans involved in the issue to exchange some dialogue. This outreach try was not successful. “Further attempts to meet were

offered. A meeting was planned for April 3 to take place at the clubhouse with four veterans (two of whom were among the group threatening, and two veterans willing to help with this issue); however, prior to this meeting (it was) tried to arrange for a room, but they were all reserved. During that same time period (it was) dis-covered that the veterans’ group planned to attend this meeting in force (eight to 15 men), which was not what was planned. “The four men were contacted

(one was left a voicemail message) and told of the change of location for the meeting and explained why. The three men

spoken to were fine with the change in location. “At 10:40 p.m., (I) was told that

one of the veterans’ group mem-bers had called (and said) ‘they will not meet unless it is in the clubhouse.’”A second meeting was held April

7, attended by residents and board members alike. Smith stated that it wasn’t until

this meeting that he was aware of Pescino being part of the group taking action on the issue of the memorial’s removal.Pescino said he feels marginal-

ized.“Look, I can’t tell you how angry

this makes me and the other vets. After everything they’ve done. Look at this guy here,” he said, pointing to his friend at the kitch-en table.“He’s a combat-wounded vet-

eran. He won two Bronze Stars and two Purple Heart (medals). Just about a year ago, he finally received the Legion of Honor from France.“There’s another one, a Korean

War veteran, who got the Silver Star, Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. He’s 100 percent dis-abled. You know what?“Someone wrote to him and said,

‘Why are you causing all this trouble?’“’Trouble?’ How much trouble

can it be to recognize and honor

people who sacrificed everything for their country?”Smith said that, to the contrary,

“I and our board are very sensi-tive to such issues, and do take these issues seriously.“However, we, the board, also

believe in coming to a table to discuss the issues. This was not

the case with this issue.”

Smith said the ballroom is an ideal location for the memori-al, because it is used on a dai-ly basis for such functions as: Annual Men’s Club Veteran’s Dinner; Monthly, Bocce Club/Tennis Club/Social Committee Dinner Dances; Monthly Men’s Club/Women’s Club/Tennis Club Meetings; bi-weekly Computer Club classes; monthly Board of Directors Workshops and board meetings; monthly resident advi-sory committee meetings; weekly bridge games; seasonal, five pro-fessionally produced stage shows

Project) through an officer who gave flight physicals.“I was just jumping through

hoops — trying to get a physical, get a [pilot’s] license — I had just about given up. But Jim said, ‘Let’s go see Doc,’ and I figured why not give it a try?”At the time, Renegade Light

Sport was located in Fort Pierce. “Jim and I drove there, and that’s where I met Doc,” Counihan said.“He told me all I needed to get

my pilot’s license was a driver’s license. It blew my mind.”At the time, Counihan had

applied to Florida Atlantic Uni-versity, and was waiting to hear whether he’d been accepted. He discovered that the Broken

Wing Project was due to get un-der way in October 2013. And he wanted in.“I began hounding Doc, just

kind of calling him, ‘Hey, how’s it going, when can I start.’“It took a while, because Doc

was busy, but I kept checking in. I got through to him in January, while he was at the Sebring Air Expo, and he said, ‘Come on up and hang out.’“So I called in sick — I was deliv-

ering pizzas at the time. I went up there, and Doc and I talked a lot.“Eventually he said, ‘How at-

tached are you to delivering pizzas?’ He made me the offer of working with him and eventually becoming a certified flight in-structor.“I put in my two weeks’ no-

tice, and I haven’t looked back,” Counihan said. While he’s waiting to be flight-

trained, Counihan is wearing a number of hats for the company.“I’m the director of veterans’

affairs for Broken Wing, and I’m also marketing for sponsors,” he said. It’s “Doc” Bailey’s hope to en-

courage enough corporate spon-

sors so that “any wounded war-rior, anywhere, can get housed, fed and trained for free,” he said.“Right now, I’m the liaison with

the VA, Wounded Warriors, any-thing veteran-involved,” Couni-han said, which includes giving presentations to various agencies on the Broken Wing Project.“I’ve got a lot of money hoops to

jump through, but I’m going to keep going,” he said.Mary Jane and the gang at

Renegade help keep Counihan focused and happy, but he also credited his close family.“I never liked the war thing,”

confessed Counihan’s dad, regarding his son’s decision to serve in the Army. “I was in a coma myself after a motorcycle accident, so I knew first-hand what could happen.“Even now I’m concerned (about

Counihan’s decision to fly). When he goes up, I’ll worry. But we embrace and support him 100 percent.“It brings up his whole spirit,”

Counihan III said. “I’m very grate-ful he came back with his wits coherent. He’s open, he’s honest — he’s just a good kid.”This “good kid” is going to be, in

his own words, “the poster child” for amputee and paraplegic vets who one day will learn to fly.Not only is flying a confi-

dence-booster for these veterans, but also a potential job avenue in commercial flight or repair and maintenance careers. “Confidence-booster” may be

an understatement. “It was a life-changer for me,” Counihan said.“Once you get up in the air, it’s

amazing.”Bailey said he expects to have

four future Broken Wing pilots in training by the end of the year – and Counihan, the first “Broken Winger,” will be right there ready to help guide them into their own “life-changer.”

WINGS from page 4

which average over 400 residents and guests attending; and (we) will be hosting the St. Lucie West Presidents Council monthly meet-ing (which several Port St. Lucie council members are planning to attend). “Thus, as you can see, this is

the most heavily used clubhouse room and the most visual area in this room is the front wall, which would hold the ‘Wall of Honor,’ all the (service) flags, and our Stars and Stripes along with them, and have room to grow. “Prior to each function, our res-

idents are asked to stand for the Pledge (of Allegiance). If this were the location, all those ‘memorial-ized’ would also be saluted.”Pescino disagrees, and the issue

remains at an impasse.

This type of dispute is perhaps experienced by many communi-ties that have veterans as res-idents. Memorials are a highly emotionally charged issue, as was seen in last week’s Veteran Voice coverage of the dispute between a veteran and Patrick Air Force Base (see Vol. 2, Issue 24).Good-faith efforts are required

on both sides to reach a compro-mise between veterans who feel disrespected and a residential governing board that must take many variables into consideration — it’s not an easy task. Continu-ing to communicate, however, would seem to be the best way forward.Editor’s note: Veteran Voice will

continue to monitor the progress of both the Cascades of St. Lucie West memorial and Patrick AFB POW/MIA table issues.
