Frequently Asked Questions
What is VET?Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education and training that gives students skills and knowledge for work. VET operates through a national training system, and is delivered, assessed and certified by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).
What are ISCA Schools?ISCA is the Inner South Curriculum Alliance and comprises the ten Department For Education schools listed in this brochure.
The courses offered here are designed to meet the training needs of the students within the Alliance. Students also have access to a range of other VET courses not included here. Please see your school’s VET Coordinator for more information.
Can VET count towards the SACE?Yes. Students can include a significant amount of VET in their SACE studies. Students can gain recognition for up to 150 SACE credits at Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 for successfully completed VET, depending on the qualification.
These recognition arrangements help students to develop pathways in the SACE through VET, and encourage students to complete, or make significant progress towards completing VET qualifications while completing the SACE.
Please see your school’s VET Coordinator for more information and visit the SACE website at www.sace.sa.edu.au/web/vet.
What are the benefits of choosing VET? • Gaining a nationally recognised qualification
whilst completing yo ur SACE • Getting a head start in your chosen career • Providing opportunities to learn on-the-job
through workplace learning
• Gaining employability skills and knowledge that employers are looking for
• Providing pathways to apprenticeships, traineeships, further training or direct employment.
How much will it cost me?Course costs vary and are available on the ISCA website at:isca.eschoolsolutions.com.au or from your VET Coordinator.
Administration feeIn addition to the course costs listed on the website, there is an administration fee per student per course as follows:
ISCA Schools: Nil
Non ISCA Department For Education Schools: $50
Non Department For Education schools: $250
How will I get there? All students are required to arrange their own transport to VET courses and to Work Experience.
Will I need to do Work Experience as part of my VET Course? Some VET Programs require students to complete Work Experience as part of their training in a real or simulated work environment. These placements provide valuable training and mentoring to develop your technical and employability skills.
What SACE subjects fit with my VET Program?A SACE subject highly recommended for VET students is Stage 1 and 2 Workplace Practices. Students who gain the most from this subject are usually involved in a VET program, part time work, apprenticeships or traineeships, volunteering or community work. The course content of Workplace Practices compliments and adds value to what you are learning in your training or other work.
How will my VET Course impact on University and TAFE entry? Some fully completed VET Courses, at Certificate III level or above, can contribute to your Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). TAFE SA recognises SACE completion as meeting the entry requirements for most of its courses.
It also considers a variety of other qualifications (including VET) and experiences in its entry selection processes.
For more information on University or TAFE entry, please see your school’s VET/SACE Coordinator.
Will doing a VET Course affect my other subjects? You may miss lessons for other subjects whilst attending your VET program and work experience. You will need to be well organised and work closely with your subject teachers and VET Coordinator to ensure this impact is minimised.
School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships
A School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SBAT) is a great way to start your career while completing your SACE. SBATs enable students from years 10 – 12 to combine paid work, training (VET) and school, while working towards both the SACE and a nationally recognised qualification. Students undertaking an SBAT commence work under a Training Contract with a registered employer.
Some benefits of undertaking an SBAT are:
• start your career whilst still at school• gain hands-on experience in the workplace• you’ll earn money while you learn• earn SACE credits from your Vocational Education & Training to contribute towards your SACE achievement• your school based Training Contract will convert to full-time or part-time when you leave school
How to seek further information? You need to speak to the Careers Adviser/VET Coordinator at your school. They can answer any questions you may have and put you in contact with our Pathways Manager.
For more information about School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships go to www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au
