Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home American Heart Campaign

A Heart Felt Thank You Goes out to Julia Eveker and Stephanie Nichols who led our American Heart Association fund raising

campaign efforts for 2019. We also want to recognize the Georgia Warrior’s Team members who

volunteered their time, effort, and money to conduct the most successful campaign we have ever had. The

team members are LaTonya Jones, Lori Bing, Brenda Williams, Tamala Bray, Pam Parker, Maefield

Streetman, Sharon Neely, and Lisa Hadden. There were so many more staff members and families helping

behind the scenes as well! A special thanks goes out to Micah Ferguson, Amy Green, Henry Williams,

Tiffany Johnson, Chris Townsend, Ramona Little, Laurie Cordaro, Candace Welch, and Janice Taylor.

All of these individuals consistently volunteered and assisted in the fundraising efforts. It was really a

total team effort, especially for those who sold hearts, links, candy bars, raffle tickets and the like! So, if

you know of someone who volunteered, please offer them a big THANK YOU! We are so very fortunate to

have a GREAT team here at GW!

Altogether, Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home had a very strong showing in the American Heart

Association Campaign at Augusta University Raising Over $10,000!! Donations were made by staff,

residents, visitors, and family members. A heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to everyone one who made the

campaign such a success. Of course, we could not get the job done without our strong partner,

Morrison’s Healthcare, who manages our Dietary Services Department and coordinates many of our

facility-wide events. We also want to thank John McKenzie and staff in the Veterans Benefits Office for

their continued support and contributions. This year’s campaign was truly a team effort and lots of fun!

And let’s not forget those who made it out Saturday morning and participated in the AHA HeartWalk on

March 9th. Thank you Walkers! Again, congratulations on another successful campaign in an effort to

reduce our nation’s number one killer – Heart Disease. Your contributions will go a long way in

providing support to cardiovascular research right here at Augusta University.

Happy National Nurses Week! Please take a moment to thank a nurse for all that they do for Georgia War and our community! Below is a brief history of the evolution of Nurses Week. In 1993, the American Nurses Association declared May 6-12 as the national week to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession. National Nurses Week is a time for everyone – individuals, employers, other health care professionals, community leaders, and nurses – to recognize the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses. Each year, the celebration ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday.

-Carlton Deese

A Brief History of National Nurses Week 1953 Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare sent a proposal to President Eisenhower to proclaim a "Nurse Day" in October of the following year. The proclamation was never made. 1954 National Nurse Week was observed from October 11 - 16. The year of the observance marked the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale's mission to Crimea. Representative Frances P. Bolton sponsored the bill for a nurse week. Apparently, a bill for a National Nurse Week was introduced in the 1955 Congress, but no action was taken. Congress discontinued its practice of joint resolutions for national weeks of various kinds. 1972 Again a resolution was presented by the House of Representatives for the President to proclaim "National Registered Nurse Day." It did not occur. 1974 In January of that year, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) proclaimed that May 12 would be "International Nurse Day." (May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale.) Since 1965, the ICN has celebrated "International Nurse Day." 1974 In February of that year, a week was designated by the White House as National Nurse Week, and President Nixon issued a proclamation. 1978 New Jersey Governor Brendon Byrne declared May 6 as "Nurses Day." Edward Scanlan, of Red Bank, N.J., took up the cause to perpetuate the recognition of nurses in his state. Mr. Scanlan had this date listed in Chase's Calendar of Annual Events. He promoted the celebration on his own. 1981 ANA, along with various nursing organizations, rallied to support a resolution initiated by nurses in New Mexico, through their Congressman, Manuel Lujan, to have May 6, 1982, established as "National Recognition Day for Nurses." 1982 In February, the ANA Board of Directors formally acknowledged May 6, 1982 as "National Nurses Day." The action affirmed a joint resolution of the United States Congress designating May 6 as "National Recognition Day for Nurses." 1982 President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation on March 25, proclaiming "National Recognition Day for Nurses" to be May 6, 1982. 1990 The ANA Board of Directors expanded the recognition of nurses to a week-long celebration, declaring May 6 - 12, 1991, as National Nurses Week. 1993 The ANA Board of Directors designated May 6 - 12 as permanent dates to observe National Nurses Week in 1994 and in all subsequent years. 1996 The ANA initiated "National RN Recognition Day" on May 6, 1996, to honor the nation's indispensable registered nurses for their tireless commitment 365 days a year. The ANA encourages its state and territorial nurses associations and other organizations to acknowledge May 6, 1996 as "National RN Recognition Day." 1997 The ANA Board of Directors, at the request of the National Student Nurses Association, designated May 8 as National Student Nurses Day.

GA WAR ENTERS ELKS ART COMPETITION

The Elks host an annual spring arts and crafts competition locally

at the Charlie Norwood VAMC and invited our veterans to

participate. We had two artists with winning entries this year: Dr.

Robert Crumrine and Colonel Judy Mosbey.

Dr. Bob Crumrine began painting with watercolors many years ago,

studying under local artist, Jim Gensheer. Dr. Bob painted,

“Country Chapel” as his Elks Art competition entry, winning 2nd

place for his efforts.

Mrs. Mosbey won 3rd place with her watercolor, “Mountain

Lupines.” Judy was a USAF flight nurse. She has been painting

and sculpting for most of her adult life, and earned an Art

Education degree at the University of Georgia.

Bob and Judy are repeat winners of this event and were joined by entrants Mr. Jack Yelton and

Mr. Willie Payne, who entered intricate puzzles created with the assistance of Maefield

Streetman and Sharon Neely, our Activities Staff on the 4th and 5th floors.

Veterans, we salute your artwork and year-round efforts to share your creative endeavors with

those around you. Our vibrant activities staff and occupational therapy department encourage

our veterans to explore leisure pursuits that enhance life through the arts, and our veterans

enjoy the opportunity to create beautiful pieces which adorn their rooms or bless their family

and friends with their handiwork. We are grateful to the Elks, who make this contest

interesting as an opportunity to spur our veterans on with their participation in arts and crafts.

Congratulations to our four participants!

Chaplain’s Corner

Happy Father’s Day

Greetings all,

The summer weather is approaching quickly. Please make sure you are practicing water safety by staying

hydrated. What an honor it has been serving as your Chaplain at GA War Nursing Home! As we enter the

month of June, we celebrate Father’s Day! “The nation’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19,

1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow

Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the

United States. Father’s Day 2019 occurs on Sunday, June 16.” As a Chaplain, I understand the

dynamics in relationships. Some of you reading this may have or had a wonderful relationship with

your earthly Father, but some of you may not have. I want to offer words of encouragement today and

share some thoughts from my faith. Romans 8:15 explains, “For ye have not received the spirit of

bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” God’s

Word says in this verse that when we put our faith in Him, He will be our Father and we are adopted into His

loving family. What a joy it is to know that you can find comfort and not fear in knowing that God loves you

unconditionally! May you have a blessed month of June and may God give you all strength and comfort

today!

Chaplain Travis Jones

A Fallen-Soldiers Sonnet

Fallen warriors, gone too soon:

The best, the brave—bold and bright.

Like a comet thrust from the skies

On a late-summertime night.

Men who'd taken up the cause—

Giving no less than their all.

Thirty-one brilliant, eager minds

For whom we silently pause.

In behalf of the motherland,

They've paid the ultimate price.

We acknowledge now their families

In memories of their sacrifice.

And of their story, time will tell.

For they shall be remembered well.
