Air Handling Section

In accordance to the ASHRAE Standard62-89 for Indoor Air Quality, Trane hasdeveloped an exclusive and innovativedesign for the drain pan. This designinsures proper drainage, preventingconditions of water stagnation that couldresult in microbial growth.

All the air handlers feature a factoryinstalled belt drive and ball bearingevaporator fan with adjustable shelves.The unit can be installed indoors; thecondenser air can be ducted to theoutside or installed in a remote location.

For free horizontal application, theoptional discharge plenum withaluminum grills insures a quietoperation and maintains the aestheticsof the units.

In the return section an optionalaluminum grill grants an easy andelegant installation.

Scroll Compressoroffers significant efficiency and reliablebenefits. With fewer moving parts thancomparable reciprocating compressors,there is less internal friction andtherefore greater efficiency. A smoothcompressor cycle, due to the low torquevariation, creates less stress on themotor for greater reliability andefficiency.

How the Scroll Compressor Works

GeneralThe compressor has two scrolls. The topscroll is fixed and the bottom scrollorbits. Each scroll has walls in a spiralshape that intermesh.

Inlet — First OrbitAs the bottom scroll orbits, tworefrigerant gas pockets are formed andenclosed.

Compression — Second orbitThe refrigerant gas is compressed as thevolume is reduced closer to the center ofthe scroll.

Discharge — Third OrbitThe gas is compressed further anddischarged through a small port in thecenter of the fixed scroll.

Programmable Thermostat (PT)PT programming is very simple! PT hasa display that shows the hour, the day ofthe week, the selected program and theambient temperature. PT can beprogrammed for up to four setpoints foreach day of the week. Using the button“timed-override” the customer canprolong the machine operation beyondthe programmed schedule, according tocustomer needs.

3 Filter OptionsThree filter options exist which may beinstalled in Genius units.

1. Permanent washable filters ofelectrostatic fabric (standard).

The selection of a Genius self-containedunit can be accomplished in three easysteps.1LOAD: Determine the load requirementsfor heating and cooling (include outsideair) using Trane’s load estimate forms,TRACE® Easy/600 or any standardmethod.2UNIT TYPE: Self-contained airconditioners are available in eitherwater-cooled or remote air-cooledmodels to match individual needs.3SELECT THE UNIT: The conditions underwhich the unit must operate and thedesign load will give the final selection.

The Genius line offers two Controloptions: Standard Thermostat orMicroprocessor Control.

Standard ThermostatAll units are supplied with a controlthermostat as standard feature. Thisthermostat can be installed remotely orin the equipment, according to the needsof the client.

Microprocessor ControlThe Microprocessor Control UCP (unitcontrol processor) is factory assembledand tested. It controls unit operation inthe independent mode (standalone) or itallows communication when the unit isworking in an integrated comfort system(Tracer, Tracer Summit, Tracker).

Some of the main advantages andbenefits of using the microprocessor are:

Great reliability: As we know, this type ofcontrol has demonstrated itself to behighly reliable, thus avoidingdecalibration or breakdown.

Direct digital control: The IntegralProportional Control allows more precisetemperature control of the area to be air-conditioned. In addition, the temperaturesensing instrument is more sensitivethan the one used in traditional cases.With this instrument joined to the UCP itis possible to guarantee a setpointtemperature of + - 0.5F.

Easy diagnosis: The controller allows theoperator to carry out easy and fast test toverify the operation of the unitcomponents (fans and compressors).

Low suction pressure during start-up:The controller ignores the lowpressurestat information duringcompressor start-up, thus avoiding thatthe unit not start because of the lowpressure. If after 3 minutes the lowpressure is not within the correct range,the unit will deactivate.

Elimination of Compressor cycling: Thecontroller allows the compressor to runfor a minimum of three minutes,followed by three minutes not running(off) to make sure that there is adequateoil return to the compressor(s).

Alternation of Compressor operation:The microprocessor will alternate thecompressors according to the number ofstart-ups and hours of operation of each,

so that the degree of wear will be similarfor each one.

The microprocessor control provides theoption for simple and directcommunication between the Genius andTRACKER, Tracer or Tracer Summitbuilding administrators. Thiscommunication is achieved simply byinterconnecting the Genius unit and thebuilding administration system with atwisted pair cable.

TRACKERIn addition to being able to control thelighting of your house or building, thispanel can automatically control up to 12Genius. It also allows sending airconditioning system alarms to aMaintenance Central 24 hours a day,thus making possible various functions:

Schedule programming: On theTRACKER you do the annual operatingprogramming of each one of theinterconnected sets of equipment withthe possibility of setting two differentschedules for the initiation andtermination of operation for weekdays,weekends and holidays. The objective isto use the equipment only whennecessary. There is no need for you towaste energy.

Interface with the operator: TheTRACKER has a functional keyboard andliquid crystal display that provides theuser with a rapid visualization of thesystem with a minimum of experience.Access is restricted with a safetypassword.

Zoning: When a variable air volumesystem is controlled, it is capable ofindependently controlling thetemperature of up to 128 different zones,thus optimizing the dimensions of yourequipment as well as your investment.

Optimized start-up: The TRACKERanalyzes the most economical way toturn on the equipment so that you getthe desired temperature at theprogrammed time. This is applicable insetups where various Genius units areinterconnected to the control systemand, instead of turning on all of them atthe same time, they are turned on atdifferent times to avoid peaks in energyconsumption.

Demand limit: Automatically controlsthe programmed electricityconsumption limits of the setup. This isan important economic factor thatmakes the cost of the TRACKERinsignificant when considered on anannual scale.

Record of tendencies: Records up to 192temperature values during a time framethat you determine. This function makesit possible to do a posterior analysis ofthe system’s performance.

Record of alarms: The TRACKERimmediately identifies any breakdownsin the system, which register as alarms.Besides this, the TRACKER store in itsmemory up to 32 alarms withinformation including the date and timeof the event.

Access via telephone line: The TRACKERcan be programmed and supervisedthrough the telephone line. It can also, inthe same way, send warningsconcerning any alarms.

Easy installation: The Genius and theTRACKER leave the factory alreadyprogrammed and tested. Installation andconnection between them is done with atwisted pair.

TRACER SUMMITThis is the controller recommended forvery large installations. The Genius’smicroprocessor is also able tocommunicate with the Tracer Summitwhich provides complete integration ofthese units with the Integrated ComfortSystem.

Varitrac is the name Trane has given toour variable air volume system for smallinstallations. Airflow through the Geniusis constant while the air supply to eachzone is variable. So that this will happen,a bypass gate returns airflow that wasnot required by the zones to the system.The variable air input in each zone iscontrolled by a VAV box that includes amicroprocessor controller. Thiscontroller regulates the amount of airneeded to maintain the desiredtemperature. A panel called the CentralControl Panel (CCP) is used to program,supervise and control the Varitracsystem. Trane personnel can programthe TRACKER and the CCP.

MechanicalSpecifications

CabinetManufactured of galvanized steel plate,it is painted with anticorrosive primerand high resistance synthetic enamel.The cabinet is constructed with anbottom tray, structural laterals, frontscreen and cover and back cover. Theremote condenser cabinet is paintedwith epoxy primer and high resistanceenamel and is also constructed ofgalvanized steel plate.

For frontal access to the evaporatorunits, just loosen four screws to removethe cover and the screen.

Return ScreenScreen of anodized aluminum profilewith vertical flanges. Vertical screensprovide excellent air distribution in thecoil. This option is recommended forhulls in which the machine is visible inthe zone to be air-conditioned.

Plenum BoxThe style of the plenum box is similar tothat of the cabinet and is sized toguarantee silent operation. The plenumbox screen has a slight angle that allowsthe air flow to be directed in a vertical orlateral direction. A specific fan arrayexists for use of the Genius unit withplenum box (consult the general factstables).

This plenum should only be used whenthe discharge from the unit is free intothe atmosphere. In the case of dischargeinto a duct network, this option shouldnot be used.

CoilsAll the coils (evaporator and condenser)use tubes with 3/8” external diameterand high efficiency aluminum flange,Trane Wavy 3B model, mounted on theevaporator coil with 132 fins per foot,and on the condenser with 168 flangesper foot.

The copper tubes are expandedmechanically to guarantee perfectcontact between fin and tube. All thecoils are tested for leaks. Evaporatorcoils are tested at a pressure of 300PSIG, and the condensers at 400 PSIG.

The tray for condensation water wasdesigned according to the interior airquality standards of ASHRAE.

Copper-Copper CoilsFor applications where greaterresistance against corrosion isnecessary, coils with copper tubes andfins can be manufactured. Offer asspecial design.

Water-cooled condenserWater-cooled condensers are “Shell &Tube” type. They are manufactured withcopper tubes with integrated flanges,expanded in steel mirrors, with groovedholes, mounted in a steel casing andcast iron covers, which are removablefor easy cleaning. The casing and coversare protected with finishing paint.

Designed, constructed and testedaccording to ASME standards, for workpressure of 300 PSIG on the refrigerantside and 150 PSIG on the water side.

FansSirocco type centrifugal fans,constructed of galvanized steel platewith static and dynamically balancedrotors. The evaporator array is sized toovercome up to 1.6 inches of externalstatic pressure.

FiltersThe standard unit is furnished withpermanent washable filters ofelectrostatic fabric.

Scroll CompressorAll compressors of the Genius line arescroll type. They are of high efficiencyusing ports instead of valves, whicheliminates possible breakdowns. Theyhave 64% fewer moveable parts than areciprocating compressor of the samecapacity. Their operation is extremelysmooth and silent.
