President’s Message

By Dave Trahan Deerfield, New Hampshire

More Than People & Dogs

Congratulations to all of the handlers and dogs who earned the new title of Versatile Champion! Congratulations also for those of you who ran your dog but did not pass. It takes

a lot of time and dedication just to get a dog ready for this event. Think of the great work each handler is getting out of his or her dog this hunting season!

The “best of the best” come to the Invitational. If you are a NAVHDA member and you successfully pass the Utility (UT) test, you need to set your goals for our Versatile Champion test—The Invitational. In my opinion, it is the greatest test in North America! It is where fellow members come together hop-ing to hear that one word: “PASS,” and then, “We have a new Versatile Champion.”

I would personally like to thank Jason Wade and his family for taking over the task of preparing my dog for this event. Prior to my auto accident, “My plate was full,” as they say. My dog Hanna had whelped a litter of pups in the spring. On top of that, we were training for The Invitational. It all came to a screeching halt (literally!).

Jason and his family came down to see me in the hospital. We sat and talked about Jason running Hanna in the Invitational. I told him I had nothing to lose. Up to that point, I had been work-ing her all summer, and Hanna was doing all that was asked of her. Jason had only five weeks to get her to work with him—a

different handler. At first she tested him, but as time went on they started to “click” with each other. Now, some people may think that it would be easy for Jason to take over, but, trust me, it is not! Working together, Jason along with his father and son, made it work. (I told Jason, “Now you get to feel the pressure I feel every time I run a client’s dog.”)

Jason left with his son and my Hanna for the Invitational with the vision of running on Thursday, but Hanna came into heat, so her running day was moved to Sunday. That really put the pressure on Jason! He would be judging for two days before he would be running Hanna! Like a nervous parent, I called Jason reminding him to take Hanna for some runs—I was thinking that her being in a crate for three days would not be good!

Jason texted me after each of her events giving his opinion on how Hanna did. The last thing he said was, “It’s up to the judges now.” About an hour later, I received a call from Jason. He said, “Someone would like to talk to you.” He handed the phone to his father, Peter. Between Peter reading the scores with choked emotion, and the phone signal breaking up, I heard the word “Pass!”

Sitting in my chair with smile on my face, the anxiety pain in my chest went away, making it “my day.”

All I can say is thank you, and reflect on how NAVHDA is more than people and dogs. Much more.

About The Cover

Yes,My VC Hunts

By Joe LakeLakeville, Minnesota

In the fall of 2013 we were looking for a new puppy, so we contacted Paul and Angie Coenen of Hurricane Kennels. We made a trip to their kennel to watch our future puppy’s mother hunt. We decided to get a

puppy from this litter, and we named her Hurricane Precious Pearl. At the start we only planned on doing the Natural Ability Test. Once

we finished that, I decided I wanted to try the Utility Test. The first time we tried for the Utility Test, we got caught up in the duck drag. I thought it was an easy fix and decided to retest her a week later. The second time Pearl was not steady. That is when I decided we both needed more disci-pline in our training. The following summer we started to train with Dan and Kara Gannon of DanKar Kennels to run the Utility Test again. This time was a huge success for me and Pearl—we passed with a 204 Prize I and were invited to the 2017 Invitational in Steubenville, Ohio.

We started our training by going to the 2016 Invitational in Iowa to see how the test was run. After watching this test, I knew pass-ing the Invitational was not going to be easy. That is when I de-cided to devote my entire summer to training. I was fortunate enough to spend the summer with some really great trainers, and it eventually paid off. Over the course of the summer Pearl real-ly began to mature. To prepare for Ohio, we had to have many different training situations. We got up at 4:00 a.m. to train blind retrieves in the fog to assure us she would know what to do in that type of weather. We practiced backing with many different dogs and dog breeds to expose her to different looks and situations. We tried to switch up blind training spots and fields so she would perform in any location.

The summer finally came to an end, and we were on our way to Ohio. We ran on Friday, and I was pretty nervous about the whole day. We started out in the field as the third brace. Pearl was a little hyper and crazy at the start, but after I called her back to me a couple times and calmed her down she straightened out. Pearl did a great job at the blind and an even better job at the double mark. The day came to an end and all we had to do was wait for scores to be read. Finally the waiting was over and we got a 195 and a pass.

It sure is nice to have a Versatile Champion in our house, but the real treat is hunting her on wild birds. The training we did for the Invitational is used just about every time we go in a field

or the grouse woods. We hunt her for grouse in Minnesota and occasionally northern Wisconsin. Pearl is very steady and knows how to back other dogs on point. She has been in multiple situ-ations where if she hadn’t backed or whoaed, the grouse would have gotten away.

Another great skill Pearl has learned is to relocate running birds. One bird that gave Pearl the challenge of her life was in late October when we were hunting our land in southern Min-nesota for pheasant. I was walking along the edge of a cornfield, and Pearl was running alongside the tall grass field right next to me. She kept going on multiple intense points but nothing was there. Pearl would get released and track for a ways just to put on another intense point, proving that the bird was running ahead of us. After about four or five points Pearl, finally pinned down the rooster at the other end of the field. I was able to get a clean shot on the bird, and Pearl got her long-awaited award.

MOISHE RAGIEME RN © 2017

We have also used our invitational training in the duck blind. Many times we shoot ducks, and she doesn’t see where the bird falls, so she gets sent on a blind retrieve. The blind retrieve has proven to me multiple times that its importance is huge in order to have a good hunting dog. Whether on land or water, the odds of us using the blind retrieve are very likely. Another piece of invitational training that helped Pearl this year was the double mark. Many times we’ve had two or more ducks shot at once, and Pearl had to do multiple retrieves. The double mark really helped Pearl with marking and remembering that there could be more than just one duck out there when I send her on a retrieve.

I couldn’t have gotten Pearl to the level of training she’s at without the help of Dan and Kara, Paul and Angie, Carey, Jeff and all of the other great members of the St. Croix and Southern Minnesota chapters of NAVHDA.

What do beef jerky, milk bones, and listening have in common?

It seems there are many that take on the task of training their dogs. While some are successful, many are not. My wife, Angie, and I per-sonally have seven German Shorthaired Pointers. Today as I write this, Pepper, the oldest, turns 17 years old. She is completely deaf and struggles with getting completely outside before she potties, but she’s happy—and later today will perform her dance we call the “Pepper Dance,” when she gets her traditional hamburger for her birthday. We will actually pick up seven burgers so everyone gets to celebrate. Of the seven that we have, three are Versatile Champions and Master Hunters. Of the four remaining, three were never trained for testing and the puppy will run her Natural Ability test next year.

So, the way I look at it, we have three dogs that we have trained that have performed at a high level, giving them distinction in NAVHDA and AKC platforms. I tell you this not because we are great trainers, but, instead, to give you the secret to our success. Wait for it… Listening. That’s right… Listening. We listen and learn.

We started this whole dog business deal from scratch like every-one else. The difference is that we make great efforts to expose our dogs, and ourselves, to many people and situations throughout the dog world and, specifically, the NAVHDA circles. We seek advice, and listen like sponges to absorb the knowledge.

That being said, there is a common theme that allows people to learn from others and be successful—and that is a unique feature of NAVHDA. We do not compete against each other. We are in this for the good of the dog and the hunt. There is satisfaction with helping others succeed. We could never have accomplished what we have without the help of some great people. There are quite a few that have become friends through this process. Without assuming too much, I would think those that have helped us also have a sense of pride when they see us succeed. I know we feel good when we can help others as well.

Case in point: In 2011 we kept a puppy from our litter. Hurri-cane’s Brandy Old Fashion has been a hoot to work with over the years. She may be a smaller-framed dog, but her drive and heart are as big as they come. A year or so later, we sold a puppy to a family we now consider part of our Hurricane Family. A young boy came that day, back in 2013, and picked out his dog that would change his family. Joe Lake, and his parents Darren and Lynn Lake, didn’t know that much about training, but they knew they wanted a good dog. Joe saw that little white and liver female point—and that was his dog. Hurricane’s Precious Pearl went home that day.

We often worry about keeping touch with our puppies and their owners, but that wasn’t a problem here. Joe and his parents be-came regulars at NAVHDA events and often volunteered at tests and training days. The Southern Minnesota NAVHDA chapter’s Chukar Challenge each spring brought Joe and Pearl out to com-pete with other chapter dogs, including her mother Izzy and sister Brandy. Each year was a close battle. Joe ran Pearl successfully in the NA test earning a 112 Prize I that whetted his appetite for the Utility test. Joe and Pearl then went on to earn 204 Prize I on their Utility test in the summer of 2016.

During his training, Joe was spending a great deal of time with Dan and Kara Gannon of Dankar Kennels. They took Joe and Pearl under their wing and helped them learn the ins and outs of training a versatile dog. Now that Joe was training for the Invitational of 2017, as were we, our paths crossed often. We also train with the Gannons and they helped us get a start as well.

2017 brought us together more than previous years, and to see Joe and Pearl grow and learn together was appreciated by many that were watching their progress. On Labor Day weekend of 2017, I made a weekend of training with the Gannons in Wiscon-sin and Minnesota. Joe and his dad, Darren, met us at Kelly Farms

on Labor Day for a mock Invitational test. Pearl and Joe looked good. A couple of corrections, but nothing major. I said goodbye to them with a handshake and, “I’ll see you in Ohio.”

The Invitational is like nothing I have ever experienced. Just when you think you’re ready, the nerves kick in and it’s go-time! As an educator, I rarely see the “fruits of my labors.” It takes a long time for kids to mature, and keeping track of their success can be a hard task. But training dogs, testing them, and competing at a high level such as the NAVHDA Invitational is an adrenaline rush like no other. It gives me that sense of accomplishment I don’t often see in my career.

This year proved to be special. Joe and Pearl were running the same day Brandy and I were running, and Dan Gannon was running T-Bird, a special dog for their good friend. We would all be close enough in the running order that we could keep track of each anoth-er and offer encouragement throughout the day. We first went to the field. Brandy and I ran with a great brace mate and both dogs did an excellent job cooperating in the field. Joe and Pearl went soon after and had some great bird finds and stellar pointing. We then parted ways and while Joe and Pearl successfully handled the Blind Retrieve, Brandy and I enjoyed a beautiful Double Marked Retrieve with Dan and T-Bird continuing their success as well. We then switched places, and Pearl made no mistakes about the two birds at the water, as did T-Bird, while Brandy swam the distance at the Blind Retrieve and handled the Honor with grace.

To watch Joe and Pearl have a great day was every bit as gratifying as having

a good day ourselves, with Dan and T-Bird also hitting on all cylinders. Soon it was the end of the day and time for scores to be read. First came Brandy and me with a decent score of 196 and pass for VC Hurricane’s Brandy Old Fashion. Then came time for Joe’s score. The judges made a point to bring Joe up in front and give special attention to a young man, 17 years old, that started the journey in November of 2013 when he picked up his puppy from our home. It was the first time I have seen Joe smile like that. He and Pearl earned a 195 and a Pass on their first run at the prestigious NAVHDA Invitational. His parents were as proud as any two parents could be. Dan and Kara Gannon wore the pride as well for they helped this boy become a young man. Angie and I basked in the warmth of seeing two of our puppies become Ver-satile Champions on the same day. We saw this young man grow with his dog and develop a bond that will stand the test of time. A young man that listened to others willing to share their knowledge.

Dan and T-Bird? Well, they ripped it up too along with a few other friends. But that’s a whole other story. That one I will call,

“The NAVHDA Family Unites!”Dan and I toasted with what can only

now become an Invitational tradition of beef jerky sandwiched between two dog biscuits to celebrate passing the Invita-tional. Joe didn’t engage in the new tradi-tion, but if he keeps this whole dog train-ing thing going, he’ll see the joy in some well placed jerky and milk bones. How’d it taste? I wouldn’t order it for my birth-day, but for an Invitational pass I will eat it every time.

When Lily did not pass at the 2015 Invitational due to FOG such as she had never seen, I had a hard

decision to make—try again or call it quits. I was exhausted from getting Lily ready and not sure I had it in me to keep on going, but then I realized that she was already trained, so I might as well go for it. That meant get-ting her ready for another UT Prize I.

She trained beautifully the summer of 2016, and I wasn’t expecting any trouble, but it came right off the bat. I sent her on a duck search, and she mickey-moused around. At one point, she was just stand-ing with the judges—staring at me. I did finally get her to go, but by then our score had dropped dramatically. The day didn’t get much better as she messed up on just about every event. Knowing this was most unusual, I decided to enter her the next day, taking the last spot in our chapter’s test. That day she performed much better and received her UT I.

The day after the test, we started working on water blinds. She loved them. This was a far cry from training for the 2015 Invita-tional when she refused blind after blind. We did blinds anyplace I could find good water and as far as 200 yards. I entered every Alaska-Yukon event they had, even though they were not geared for the Invi-tational. I begged every member of both Alaska-Yukon NAVHDA and AKC Arctic

Bird Dog for a chance to run with their dog and get backing practice in. Everyone was very accommodating. This is not a test one can pass alone.

I entered Master Hunt tests as train-ing practice. While Lily retrieved well in practice, her tests were another story. She would take the bird to the judge, drop the bird, hang her head. I realized a big part of our retrieve problem was that I would get nervous. Instead of waiting for Lily to come to heel before taking the bird I would bend over as she came in. This caused her to over anticipate me taking the bird and drop it. It was hard to trust her enough to stand upright, but I worked on it—I had members from our chapter correct me if I bent over. Lily’s retrieves got better and I got more comfortable.

We worked Heel daily. Lily is so driven that it’s hard for her to stay concentrated on me for something as mundane as Heel. We also worked on Back and Over com-mands. I tucked Over in my bag of tricks and prayed I didn’t have to use it.

We invented new drills. I would send her to chase bumpers from the dummy launch-er, and on one of those I’d have a pigeon in a launcher that would launch as she was on her way to the dummy. She had to stay focused. For myself, I handed the dog con-trols to my husband and tossed pigeons and shot at them with blanks to simulate me

shouldering the gun. Hunting season opened April 10th, and we moved the training to wild birds. I felt we were ready, Yet I wondered at the possibility of being able to pass when those much more experienced than I often fail.

The day of the test I opened the drapes to see dense fog. “NOT AGAIN!” I thought. That is what took us out of the event last time. I was very happy to find we were in the field first. Lily loves field work and was having a great time running with a Griff she had never met. She point-ed and backed. She retrieved like a pro, and I remembered to not bend over. I also remembered to shoulder my gun (most of the time). The more I relaxed, the better Lily looked. The gunners were amazing. Not only did they not miss, but they knew when to shoot in the air, when to stand still and when to quietly disappear. By the end of the hour, we were all very wet from the fog and humidity. While I was able to leave the field, I felt for the judges and workers who would continue on to the next brace.

Field work over, I headed to the Double Mark. I wasn’t particularly worried about that portion of the test, which goes to show how naïve a person can be, and how fast

things can go awry even for well-prepared dogs. The first duck Lily retrieved quick-ly. I went to line her up only to see that she had fixated on a decoy that was close to the downed duck. I sent her before she had found the duck with her eyes, and she went straight to the decoy. Lily realized her error at once, and gave the decoy a disgust-ed look, then headed to the far bank. My heart was hanging out some place between my knees. At this point, I was quite glad I had a trick to pull out of my bag. I gave her an “over”—which she took—and she soon found her duck and brought it to me. My heart returned to its normal position. This was my proudest moment in the entire test.

Now to conquer the blind. Lily gave me a bit of a scare there as she wasn’t looking at the far shore. I made use of my pre-com-mand of “Dead Bird” a couple of times, and then sent her on back. She headed out into

the lake which meant slogging through 20 yards of muck. Lily is usually a fast swim-mer, and I did a bit of lip chewing before she finally hit swimming depth and was able to pick up speed. From then on it was classic. Straight over, pick up the duck and straight back. Heeled to the Honor site, stood while the other dog retrieved the duck, and we were done.

Lots of hugs when we crossed the final line! Final score 196, with the only flaw at the double mark. A flaw I attribute to han-dler error. And a new VC is born!

To run an event such as the Invitational requires a lot of volunteers. My husband and I, along with Lily, had signed up to work at the Honor site and were scheduled for Saturday. When the cry for help came again, we signed up for Sunday as well and were placed as the Blind test dog and again at the Honor site. Helping at an event like this is great fun and a wonderful learning process. It’s a front row seat to watch the dogs work. VC Lily loves to work and had great fun retrieving duck after duck.

My appreciation of NAVHDA judges grew to a new level. From the first time I tested in NAVHDA, I was told the judg-es really wanted me to pass. This became very evident at the Blind on Saturday. About mid-day the wind changed direc-tion, and the judges were worried about the dogs scenting the ducks at the Honor site. The judges stopped the test and moved the entire Honor event to the other side of the Blind. This involved calling for clip-pers and mowing the grass, moving the bird-launcher and creating a barricade to hide it. It meant redesigning the Heel route. It also meant several test runs to make sure the duck landed where it should. VC Lily enjoyed being the test dog for this.

If you are blessed with a dog invited to the Invitational, I highly recommend you sign up for one of the many opportunities

to volunteer. You will not be disappointed. You will learn a lot and make some new friends as well.

A VC does not become one on its own. We called in the help of spouse, children and grandson. The members of our Alas-ka-Yukon NAVHDA Chapter were an in-tegral part of our training. Members from other NAVHDA Chapters also sent me en-couraging messages and suggestions as we

prepared for the test. The NAVHDA fam-ily is indeed very extraordinary. A special shout out to my friend Lulie, who not only helped in the training, but introduced me to the world of bird dogs and has encouraged me through the years.

Training for the Invitational brings about a closeness with dog and handler that is sel-dom surpassed. VC Lily and I developed a bond that will not be broken!

Bred by Guido Malandruccolo

Owned and handled by Lena Amirian

VC Rufus Di MorghengoSpinone

Many people and many dogs contributed to help pre-serve the hunting ability in the Spinone. But the com-bination of Guido, Lena and Rufus came together in a way that led to achievements that still influence the breed today.

Rufus hunted with drive, cooperation and devotion to Lena. It was a beautiful sight.

The ability and drive possessed by Rufus are the traits crucial to maintaining the hunting style charac-teristic of the Spinone. Rufus is recognized as an in-fluential dog not only for his individual achievements, but also because his record as a sire shows that his traits passed to successive generations.

The temperatures are dropping, and so are the quail as the season is

underway in many areas of North America. A great way to cook up a

daily bag limit and take off the chill is with this hearty traditional dish.

Cassoulet (pronunciation: [kas-uh-ley]), is a rich, slow-cooked casserole

originating in the south of France, containing meat (typically pork sau-

sages), goose, duck and white beans. But any game bird(s) and sausages

or smoked meats will do just fine.

Ingredients• 1 lb dried white beans (preferably Great Northern)

• 8 1/4 cs. cold water, enough to cover beans

• 1/2 lb duck or pork bacon cut into 1/3-inch-thick slices

• 1/2 lb chicken or goose sausages or skip bacon and use smoked sausages

• 4 quail, quartered

• Seasoned flour

• 1 to 2 tablespoons olive oil (if necessary)

• 1 c. chopped onion

• 3 tbs. chopped garlic (3-4 large cloves)

• 1 small stalk of celery, large dice

• 1 tbs. tomato paste

• 1 1/2 cs. chicken broth

• 1 c. white wine

• Thyme, fresh or dried

• 1 bay leaf

• Parsley, fresh or dried

• 1/4 tsp. black pepper

• 1 (14-oz) can stewed tomatoes, puréed or finely chopped with juice

• 2 cups coarse bread crumbs (like panko)

• 1/2 stick butter

• salt and black pepper

Procedure1. Cover beans with cold water by 2 inches in a large bowl and soak

8-12 hours. Drain.

2. Sauté bacon in a 6- to 8-quart cast iron pot. Add sausages as the

bacon renders and brown slightly. Remove both, leaving fat be-

hind. Add olive oil. Dust quail with seasoned flour and brown in oil,

careful not to overload the pot as you cook. Remove and set quail

aside with the bacon and sausages.

3. Lower the heat slightly and add onion, garlic, and celery. Cook

briefly until tender. Stir in tomato paste and brown slightly while

stirring. Pour in stock and wine, bring just to a simmer. Add

chopped tomatoes, herbs and black pepper. Add drained beans

and simmer until tender 45 minutes to 1 hour.

4. Distribute bacon, sausages and browned quail evenly into the sim-

mering beans and stock. Cover with heavy lid and bake in oven

350° for 45 minutes.

5. Melt butter, stir into bread crumbs, season with salt and pepper.

Remove casserole dish from the oven. Cover top of cassoulet with

bread crumb mixture. Return to the oven for 15 minutes until top-

ping is brown.

Serve with crusty bread, biscuits or corn bread.

Corn BreadIngredients• 1 c. flour

• 1 c. yellow cornmeal

• 1/3 c. sugar

• 3 1/2 tsp baking powder

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 egg

• 1 c. milk

• 1/3 c. vegetable oil

Procedure1. Hot 400º oven.

2. Butter and flour or spray 9” baking pan.

3. Whisk together eggs, milk and oil.

4. Combine flour, corn meal, sugar, baking powder and salt.

5. Stir egg mixture into dry ingredients, do not over mix.

6. Pour batter in pan and bake for approximately 25 minutes

until golden brown.

Kennel Name Applications

These applications for registration of kennel names have been received by the NAVHDA Registry. Any objections must be written and submitted to Steve Brodeur, Registrar, NAVHDA, PO Box 520, Arlington Hts, IL 60006, on or before January 1, 2018. To obtain registration forms, write the Registrar at the above address or go to www.navhda.org.

Kennel Name Breed Owners

And some other important stuff you really should think about reading...

If a litter qualifies you for a Breeder’s Award, please submit your application by the end of year. If you send in your application and do not a receive a confirmation notice in the mail within two weeks, please check with the office to make sure it was received. Just email [email protected] or call 847-253-6488. Criteria and applications can be found under “Registry” at www.navhda.org.

Be sure to send in your litter or dog’s registration early. If a dog is not registered, it will not be allowed to run in any NAVHDA tests.

The International office is having problems reading many of the application requests for both registry and membership. Please type the application or write clearly, as this is very time consuming. Also, when attaching documents to the International office email for registrations, please attach a pdf file. Look at what you are attach-ing before sending, because the office is having problems getting blank applications, and the attachments are not readable. The files need to be 8”x11,” and not dark.

We are always looking for fun photos, quotes, short training tips and anything else that you’d like to share in The Forum. Please send them to [email protected].

The Original German Shorthair

VC Border Country’s Northern Swix and I would like to express our sincere appreciation to the people that made it possible for Swix to become our 6th Versatile Champion. Ralph Sobkowicz, for providing me with a dog with a great genetic foundation to start with. To my wife, Marie, for keeping him in top physical condition and helping me train. To all the land owners who allow me to use their property to train on—Farmington Water Department, Mrs. Katherine Wattles, Kevin Vining, James Dunn, and Harold Hargreaves. To the people who trained with us—Paul Dutill, Robert England, and Jason Wade. Without these people letting us run with their dogs, we wouldn’t have been successful. Our run in the field was flawless, and it was especially memorable as my grandson, Brennen Wade, was able to walk with me in the field.
