The History of Verona The first historical records of Verona are from

the fourth century B.C. During the Roman times, it became a notable

commercial as well as political center. The Romans largely favored the location of

Verona and they colonized it in the year 89 B.C.

The History of Verona continued… Later on, Verona became the location for various

power struggles which led up to rivalries in the late 1200’s.

The della Scalas were one such family that fought for their right to govern.

Under Cangrande’s supervision, Verona captured several other smaller cities.

The History of Verona continued… After Canegrande, the heirs continued by

Mastino II and Cansignorio. Towards the end of the family’s reign, the

Castelvecchio was built as a tribute to the della Scalas.

Afterwards, Verona joined the empire of Venice. Finally, in the mid 1800’s, Verona became part

of the Kingdom of Italy.

Touristic Locations in Verona – Arena di Verona

The Arena di Verona is a 2,000 year old Roman arena.

It holds the largest opera stage in the world. During the summer months, it has opera as well

as other performances.

Touristic Locations in Verona - Ponte Scaligero

The Ponte Scaligero was built for defensive purposes and nearly destroyed during the second World War but then was later heavily reconstructed.

Touristic Locations in Verona - Ponte Pietra

The Ponte Pietra goes over the Adige River. It also needed to be rebuilt after World War II,

but using the original stones.

Touristic Locations in Verona – Jiliet’s Balcony

William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” includes a scene where Romeo talks to Juliet from her balcony. The city of Verona contains this legendary balcony which dates back to the 13th century.

Touristic Locations in Verona - Piazza dei Signori

The Piazza dei Signori is Verona’s central square.

It includes a statue of Dante due to the fact that he resided in the city for a period of time.

Touristic Locations in Verona - Piazza delle Erbe

This square used to be the Roman Forum during the Roman Empire Times, but is now an open air market that is surrounded by historic buildings and sculptures.

Touristic Locations in Verona - Castelvecchio

This castle was built by the della Scala Family when they were the rulers of Verona during the 14th century.

This was their residence during he rule of Cangrande II in 1854.
