Commodore's Report Tim Amy
The Club’s New Year’s Eve Party was sold out and well organised by Fleet Captain Rick and the many members it takes to put this event to-
gether. While few of you are out boating at this time of year, your Yacht Club is busy. Rachael is dealing with re-cording membership dues as they begin to come in, contracts and financing for the expansion are being fine tuned, the schedule of VYC events is being de-veloped and will be out to you ‘soon’! Long time member Jim Forster has kindly under-taken to organize club photos into a record of club history, renovation of club house interior will continue with a sound absorbing vinyl applied to the walls, ‘soon’! Director Craig Williams is arranging a monthly boat-ing article with local news media. If you have any boating related story or information which might be of interest to the citizens of Vernon, please let Craig know.
By popular request, the list of members waiting to be assigned moorage is to be published in this news letter and at strategic times of the year. (page 15-16) Your three person Moorage Committee works hard to ensure that moorage is assigned fairly and sensi-bly. Planning is already underway for the VYC Charity Regatta, chaired this year by Dave Simpson. This annual sailing event attracts 70 sailors from the Okanagan and some from out of Province, raising in excess of $20,000 which is donated to the Okanagan United Way. The Club’s sailing fleet also provides basic sail train-ing for 10-12 members and non members, usually in the Spring and as advertised on the web site. With the dock expansion the mast gantry will be re-moved from the end of B dock, to be replaced with perhaps an upgraded and stronger version on the dolphins at the pump out dock. The design and engi-neering of this gantry is a hot topic among the Club’s sailors this winter as they enjoy their evening Ovaltine. I wonder what they will come up with ? Remember to renew your membership and moorage SOON, it is a very good deal. Spring and sunshine and boating season will be upon us soon.

As well we will be getting started on B dock this month and I would like to thank everyone for their support.

A Happy New Year to all.
Not much to report over the holiday season. However, we are still moving forward with further renovations in the lounge.
Rear Commodore’s Report Lawrence Johnson
I have placed a copy of the moor-age wait list in this issue. (page 15
&16) The list is up to date but the moorage shown is for last year. As soon as we receive enough intent forms to give us an idea
as to what is required, we will start to assign moor-age for this year. Please don't phone the office looking for moor-age. We will phone you if you are assigned moorage for 2011.

VYC’s Sailing 101
Don and Carol Craske’s ever popular Introduction to Sailing Lessons has been taken over by the ‘three Daves,
and Jamie’. For a number of years Don and Carol’s program has been run each spring after the Boat Show and
has provided a first sailing experience for many new sailors. The three Daves (and Jamie) will be putting to-
gether a similar program for 2011, with details to follow. As in the past, the lessons will include both class-
room and on-the-water sessions given by a number of VYC sailors. While the lesson topics are yet to be final-
ized, some new ones might include: Dave and Craig’s ‘Voice projection and laughing at sea’; Jamie’s
‘Creative use of tuck tape’; Sandi and Debbie’s ‘Girls sailing around buoys’; Laurence’s ‘Proper use of sun-
glasses at sea’; Bob and Ken’s ‘Right-of-way rules for anchored boats’; Bob’s ‘Bob around on boats’; Dave’s
‘wood wood and more wood’; Steve’s ‘Ten foot-itus’; Doug’s ‘Chaos theory’; and, Dave’s ‘Crew manage-
ment and motivation for the single handed sailor’.
These lessons are open to VYC members and non-members alike, so, if you or someone you know would like
to experience sailing, please contact DaveS ([email protected]) (250-542-0053) for more information.

Yacht Club has turned into a winter wonderland
with all the snow providing a white blanket on boats stored on land and those still in moorage. One of our intrepid security team mem-bers used the new snow to follow tracks around the boats on land to check that no villainous acts were perpetrated. Yes, fellow VYC members the Winter Security Team is “on duty” during the off hours to provide “boots on the ground” surveillance at our Club. As we enter into our fourth month of winter all is well! While this may sound a bit blasé, it is good news to know that our Mem-ber Security Team concept is working. As we look towards the end of winter, and the thought of using our boats again on balmy
Okanagan Lake waters, the Secu-rity Team is preparing to gear up for Summer security posture. It is anticipated that most Team mem-bers will return for another season and, why not! It is a fun experi-ence to enjoy a calm early morn-ing as nature wakes up in the ma-rina or the laughter of the evening hill lights as they dance on the shimmering water. Some new members have indi-cated an interest in joining the Se-curity Team, good show. How-ever, realistically, 40 members is workable to ensure everyone has a chance to do a shift monthly. If you are interested in joining the Team let Rachel in the Office know. If you would like to ex-press an interest on how the
Our Security Team concept works, give the Team Leader, Ron Heu-man, (558 1063) a call or speak with the Deputy Team Leader, MJ Watson, who is generally at the Club on Friday evenings hosting the ever-popular “Friday Night Din-ners.” Remember, Club security is in the interest of every member while at the Club. Please remain vigilant. Vigilance aye Vigilance

Christmas well behind
you and the spring sunshine a distant
dream, thoughts turn to planning that
summer cruise or to more mundane
topics such as “Damn-it the teak
needs to be done again this spring!” I
subscribe to an e-mail site for Tanzer
owners and the topic of Teak finish-
ing is on-going and reaches a peak in
the early spring before the boats go
back into the water. Now most Tan-
zer sailboats are over 30 years old so
“on going” maintenance is an on-
going topic. Very few of the power-
boats that are suitable for the Lake
have Teak on them anymore, the
handrails are nice shiny chrome or
polished aluminum, but the sailors
seem to want to hang onto the tradi-
tion and have some teak on the out-
side of the hull. The Teak below
decks is a whole different story and
requires much less maintenance.
to most of the stuff used now. It felt
quite “oily” and was more difficult to
cut and machine, but it was more du-
rable.
I am not a traditionalist and most of
the external teak on my boat has been
replaced with high grade plastic mate-
rial. By the way you can buy plastic
decking that looks just like Teak. The
Teak hand rails get washed and
lightly scrubbed with soap and water
when I wash down the deck and they
soon have a nice silver grey finish
which looks quite good and tradi-
tional.
Whatever you do to the Teak on your
boat it should give you pleasure and
satisfaction and not be a dreaded
chore, If it has become a chore try
something different or sell the boat!
Dave
The philosophy of dealing with exter-
nal teak varies from the idea that it is
a naturally durable wood and needs
little attention to the notion that it
must be bright and shiny at all times
regardless of weather and sunshine.
On my email list I see all sorts of
methods of looking after teak, some
of which run to 10 or more coats of
different finishes applied in a variety
of ways. Back in the days of sailing
ships the decks were planked with
Teak because it was durable, required
little maintenance beyond a bucket
and mop and a block of “Holly stone”
with which to smooth the surface. Oil
was never applied because that made
it slippery and defeated the natural
grip that the raw wood offered.
To day most of the Teak used in boats
is plantation grown and is not the
same as the traditional forest grown
trees that used to be used. The wood
is less dense because it is fast grown
and it doesn’t have the same natural
oil content. When I worked for a tim-
ber merchant in London back in the
50’s the Teak that we imported was
forest grown and quite a bit different

New Business -Phase II Dock Expansion/Renewal preamble: Tim Amy
During 2006-07 the club approved a plan to renew and expand the docks.
Phase I converted D dock to concrete and added B dock. This added about
30 new slips, all filled immediately.
Demand for moorage has continued and we currently have (61) members
waiting to be assigned a slip. Kelowna Yacht Club is planning a significant
expansion of moorage. A study of boating needs in the North Okanagan is
currently being prepared. As yet unpublished it predicts a significant de-
mand for launching and on water moorage facilities. Our wood docks are
past life expected. Interest rates remain historically low, costs of materials
has flattened, contractors are available, VYC has significantly reduced our
debt load and the clubs cash flow is judged to be adequate. Treasurer Gary
Pearson will address the costs and financing debt servicing issues.
Recommended that B dock be converted to concrete and extended by four
fingers each side, adding 16 slips. Temporarily use the best wood from B
dock to extend C dock by 4 fingers on each side. B & C will be extended to
be even with D & E docks.

Phase II Dock Expansion and Renewal:
Moved by: Lawrence Johnson Seconded by: Dan Irvine Question and or discussion from the floor on the mo-
tion: Gary Pearson addressed any questions in regards to the cost and financing of Phase II Dock expansion and re-newal. Question was raised about the interest rate. Set right now at 3.75% for a “fixed” 5 year term. Question was raised if this would affect the Boat Show. No it will not. Question as to why not do the whole thing now? Cost would be in excess of 1 million dollars. Question as to whether we could use some of B dock’s wood to extend A dock as well. This can be looked at to see if the wood is good enough. The Motion was passed.

Our weekly Dart Night is starting to pick up speed. We have decided to change it to Thursday nights so we will not interfere with sailing nights next spring on Wednesdays. We will be switching Dart Night from Wednesday nights to Thursday nights effective next week. Thurs-day Dec 2 will be Dart Night and every Thursday from here on in. Apparently our new Bar Manager takes a few shots at the board. Come down and join in on the fun.
Thank You, Your event planning crew …
