Oil Shale ReservesIt is estimated that 72 percent of the world’s oil shale reserves are found in the Green River Formation in Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. These are the richest deposits of oil shale in the United States, and probably the world. Most projections confirm that approximately 600-800 billion barrels of oil are recoverable from the shale in these three states. Therefore, these 784,000 acres potentially contain up to 640 billion barrels of oil. Large international energy companies such as Shell, Chevron, Exxon-Mobil, Total (France), Enefit (Estonia), and Petrobras (Brazil) are working on various technologies to extract the resource in Colorado.

The Ute Indian Tribe has a tribal membership of nearly 3,000 and over half of its membership lives on the Reservation. The Uintah and Ouray reservation is located in Northeastern Utah east of Salt Lake City on U.S. Highway 40. The reservation is located within a three-county area known as the “Uintah Basin”. It is the second largest Indian Reservation in the United States and covers over 4.5 million acres. Cattle ranching, mining of oil, and drilling for natural gas are big businesses on the reservation.

Vernal, the county seat and largest city in Uintah County, is located in northeastern Utah, east of Salt Lake City and 20 miles west of the Colorado border.

Vernal’s economy is based on extracting natural resources, including petroleum, natural gas and phosphate. This has led to the establishment of branch offices of companies such as Halliburton and Schlumberger.

Tourism also plays a role in Vernal’s economy due to the town’s roots in the Old West and being a large site of ancient dinosaur fossils. Vernal and the surrounding area are popular among outdoor enthusiasts as they are situated near plentiful spots for fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities.
