VERMONT EXPERIENCE

ORVIS FLY FISHING SCHOOL

Imagine giving a gift that will be remembered long after the ribbons have been untied and wrapping paper has been thrown away and talked about for years. A Vermont Experience is a gift that truly suprises, delights and excites the recipient. Whether it’s watching the sun rise from a hot air balloon, learning to fly fish on a beautiful summer evening, or feeling the adrenaline rush of dog- sledding through the woods of Vermont, your fiance, family, friends, wedding paty, guests will be forever grateful for the lifelong memories you helped them create.

Manchester is located in southwestern Vermont. In winter, it provides lodging for the nearby Stratton Mountain Ski Resort, and in summer, it attracts trout fishermen, who come to try their luck on a classic Northeastern stream, the Battenkill. Since 1968, Manchester has been home to the American Museum of Fly Fishing. But it was in 1856, the year that Charles F. Orvis opened a fishing and tackle shop, C.F. Orvis Company that changed the history of this small rural Vermont town. The Orvis Manchester Fly Fishing School was launched in 1966 by longtime Orvis CEO, Leigh Perkins. Since then, 14 others have joined it, spread the length and breadth of the country from Bend, Oregon, to Key West, Florida.

If learning to fly fish or improving your casting technique seems like a daunting task, you just haven’t met the right instructors. Orvis runs a superb operation. The Manchester school is impeccably organized and is staffed by exceptionally charming and knowledgeable people. Pick up a fly rod and you will be casting like a seasoned angler in just two short days of classes. The expert instructors at Orvis will help you with set-ting up the rod, fly selection and knots and safely releasing your catch. Classes are held in the Orvis schoolhouse, a beautiful white single-story building with a wraparound porch, directly across from the Orvis Flag-ship Store, the fully-stocked casting ponds, and the famed Battenkill River. The Orvis Fly Fishing experience will certainly deliver a memorable experience to share with your family, friends and children, and will keep the trout laughing.

e wanted an old-fashioned wedding at home and to really make history where we are putting down roots: on

our farm in Vermont. I imagined a rural wedding with our guests parading through our meadows and long harvest tables for the

wedding feast – it was even more beautiful than I could have anticipated. Getting married on our 200-year-old farm was perfect. It made our home

sacred. Our wedding was rustic and romantic. We wanted the pictures of the day to be interchangeable with other centuries; mercury-glass bowls, linen napkins, candles in glass canning jars, invitations sealed with scarlet wax.

I think we started a lot of traditions that day. But one tradition Finn and I shared with our guests was five minutes of Quaker silence during our ceremony. It was long enough to really bring us all into the blessing of the moment. The candles were lit by each of our mothers as in a normal unity candle tradition, but instead of a unity candle, Finn’s paents built a luminaria behind the altar, which is the type of structure that is burned on sacred days in the pueblo where they live in New Mexico.

My favorite part of the day was reaching Finn at the altar, who was weeping. And vowing to be his wife, this day and every day. My veil flew off in the wind right after we were pronounced husband and wife. No matter. Finn scooped me up and carried me down the aisle. - Kate

BILLINGS FARM

t was horrifying seeing the damage Hurricane Irene had caused to this beautiful historic area. When we learned the

fate of Simon Pearce and The Woodstock Inn, our wedding was the last thing on our minds. We were concerned more with the lo-

cal residents and the damage they had suffered to their homes and businesses. And yet in the midst of this natural disaster, these Vermont

residents were putting us first! It was remarkable how in two short weeks, our vendors created a whole new wedding for us that exceeded all our original expectations. The biggest challenge was the venue. Although Bill-ings Farm was not our original venue, it was perfect, We were in the most beautiful setting in Vermont, surrounded by our closest friends and family. - Leigh

SUGARBUSH RESORT

WARREN, VERMONT

y fiancé Jeff and I initially thought about having a destination wedding, but I grew up in Vermont and we both went to college here so we have roots in Vermont. On a rainy, gray day in March we decided to go for a drive and ended up in Warren, VT. Sugarbush wasn’t the first place we looked in Vermont, but after our visit there we knew that it would be the last! Even through

t h e hail and stormy skies we could see the beauty of the mountains and the rustic elegance of the venue and everything fell into place after that. We fell in love with the idea of being outdoors in an ideal Vermont setting and of course since we were at a ski resort we had to marry on top of the mountain! Thankfully the weather on our wedding day was much different than that first day! We wanted our wedding to feel like a retreat for all of our loved ones and since most of Jeff’s family had never been here, we had to give them a real feeling of what we love so much about Vermont. The most important thing to the two of us was that everyone have a genuinely good time—we really wanted it to feel like a celebration for all of us. There is something for every-one at Sugarbush. We chose July 5, 2012 because we wanted to celebrate the holiday with fireworks and all of our loved ones at the resort the day before. We felt like Sugarbush was the perfect fusion of destination and “us.” - Emily
