How Venus Got Her FurAustrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch set out to write an
epic series of books called Legacy of Cain. Venus in Furs was one
novella in his six-part first volume. Published in 1870, the notorious
story fictionalized the author’s submissive, erotic entanglement
with Baroness Fanny Pistor. Not considered a great novel – David
Ives says, “Its prose is as Teutonically leaden as velvet sandbags” -
Sacher-Masoch nonetheless succeeded in putting the masochism
in S&M. The book, the only one of his works ever published in
English, continues to have influence in popular culture, including
film adaptations, songs, and of course, Ives’ play. The playwright
has said he called it Venus in Fur rather than Furs because it just
sounded better. - Dorothy Sanders, Dramaturg

DAVID IVES (Playwright) is perhaps best known for his evening of one-act plays, All In The Timing (he has been included in the “Best Short Plays” series seven times), and for his drama, Venus in Fur, which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. Other plays by Ives include New Jerusalem; The Interrogation Of Baruch De Spinoza; The School For Lies (adapted from Molière’s The Misanthrope); The Liar (adapted from Corneille); Time Flies;
and Is He Dead? (adapted from Mark Twain). He has also translated Feydeau’s A Flea In Her Ear and Yasmina Reza’s A Spanish Play. A former Guggenheim Fellow in playwriting and a graduate of The Yale School of Drama, he lives in New York City.
KRISTA SCOTT (Director) returns to Circle Theatre after directing the revenge comedy Exit, Pursued by a Bear last summer. Her performances on Circle’s stage include Bertha in Boeing, Boeing and as the Retirement Home Director in Marvin’s Room. Other local roles include Vivian Bearing in Wit, Dottie in Noises Off (Theatre Arlington), Inspector Goring in The Game's Afoot (WaterTower Theatre) and Kim in First Day of School (Amphibian
Productions). Other professional directing credits include Mr. & Mrs. Fitch at Amphibian Productions, The Unfortunates at Kitchen Theatre (NY), as well as Two Rooms, The Heidi Chronicles, Steel Magnolias, and eight productions of A Christmas Carol at The New Tradition Theatre in Saint Cloud, MN, which she founded with her husband, Brian Martinson. Krista is an assistant professor at Texas Christian University, where she directed the Theatre TCU productions of Measure for Measure, How I Learned to Drive, The Beaux’ Stratagem, The Crucible, and The Beauty Queen of Leenane. She is a certified Fitzmaurice Voicework instructor and was the dialect coach for the Circle Theatre production of The Whipping Man. She has also coached voice/text/dialects for The Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Trinity Shakespeare Festival, The Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., Casa Mañana, Dallas Theatre Center, and numerous theaters in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Ms. Scott received her MFA in Acting from the University of Minnesota and a BFA degree in Theatre from Emporia State University. She is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographer’s Society, and an Equity Membership Candidate.
