R OVER 30 YEARS -

Ventrolla has over 30 years experience in renovating and draught-proofing sash, casement and other timber windows and doors, avoiding the need for unnecessary and costly replacement.

Through our national network of expert craftsmen, we have established ourselves as the market leader in timber sash and casement window renovation, serving both residential and commercial customers, including English Heritage, Historic Scotland and CADW in Wales.

Traditional windows are an essential feature of a period building’s character. Therefore it is vital to retain them, not only because of the aesthetic appeal, but because they add value to your property.

Maintaining these traditional features previously meant compromising on comfort. Not with Ventrolla!

Our unique renovation service makes problems associated with older windows such as draughts, rattles and operational issues, a thing of the past, allowing you to enjoy your windows regardless of the weather outside, whilst also reducing your energy costs.

Who are we?

“Excellent service from all staff. Any problems encountered were dealt with swiftly and professionally.

The system is great, draught-free windows without compromising the traditional look in our 170 year old

cottage. A friend recommended Ventrolla to us and we are continuing to pass on the recommendation chain.

Thank you very much.”

Did you know?Renovating your timber sash windows is a wise choice. It not only enhances the beauty and comfort of your home, it is also an investment that adds value to your property.

Renovating your period timber windows typically works out at the same cost as replacing them with uPVC windows.

“82% of Estate Agents say period features add value to a property and 78% say that they help to sell a property quicker” – source: English Heritage.

Our innovative renovation service makes future painting and maintenance of your windows simple, with no need for costly, inconvenient scaffolding.

Draught-proofing and energy efficiency work qualifies for a 5% VAT rate compared to the standard 20%, saving you money.

“Thank you very much for an excellent job, by some

of the nicest, most professional builders I have had working here for three

decades.”

Stage 1 – Renovation• The timber sashes are carefully removed from the frame• Glazing is replaced if required• Any decaying timber in the windows, frame or sill is routered out to expose the healthy timber• If necessary, where the existing timber is beyond repair new timber is spliced in to replace it • Our unique epoxy resin, VR90 is used to fill the cavities and is moulded to match the existing timber• Sash cords are replaced, pulleys serviced and the sashes correctly balanced to ensure smooth operation

By renovating your existing timber windows we can give you many of the benefits of a modern uPVC window without losing any of their unique charm and heritage.

Ventrolla offers a two stage service that focuses firstly on renovating the existing window and then on draught-proofing it to improve energy efficiency. We carry out all the work internally, with minimal disruption to you and your home.

What we do

Before After

Stage 2 – Draught-ProofingSash windows have a 3mm air gap around the sashes to allow the sashes to slide past each other and operate smoothly.

It is this air gap that causes the inherent problems associated with sash windows, such as draughts, rattles, dust ingress and reduced energy efficiency. Our draught-proofing system eliminates these problems.

• Grooves are routered out of the mid rail and bottom rail• Pile carriers and the correct sized weatherfin pile are then installed, making the seal an integral part of the window• New staff and parting beads that incorporate the weatherfin pile complete the seal.

What we do

Invented by Ventrolla’s founder, we draught-proof the window by installing the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS), which has been independently tested and proven to provide improved energy efficiency, without altering the appearance of the window.

For ease of future painting, cleaning and maintenance we have developed the unique Ventrolla Sash Removal System (SRS).

As illustrated, the system is discreetly mounted in the side of the window sash, allowing safe and easy removal of both the upper and lower sashes to give free access to the window box frame.

Colchester homeowner Ashley Ford is waving goodbye to high energy bills thanks to window specialist Ventrolla Cambridge and Essex.

Ashley instructed Ventrolla to restore six sash windows at the front of his semi-detached property, which dates back to the 1880s. The property is situated in a conservation area and the window specialists avoided altering the original design of the exterior by preserving the original sash windows.

Ashley said: “I like the idea that the windows have been in place for over a hundred years and I hope that by renovating them I will be able to preserve them for another hundred years.”

He has lived in the property for ten years and decided to have the repairs carried out to limit disruption from outside noise, reduce heat loss and lower his energy bills.

Casement Windows

Ashley added: “With energy costs always rising, it made sense to take measures to insulate the house. The main bedroom is at the front of the property and although the house is not on a busy road, with the old windows there was still a substantial amount of traffic noise.”

Along with fully restoring the windows, Ventrolla installed its unique Perimeter Sealing System into the gap around the sashes. The seal is designed to eradicate draughts and rattles, while ensuring that the sliding action of the windows becomes smooth.

Ashley said: “The windows are so much easier to open and close now and I am looking forward to a draught-free winter.”

He was so delighted with the completed work he called Ventrolla back to draught-proof the front door as well. The newly renovated windows did not go unnoticed by local residents and two of Ashley’s neighbours soon placed orders with Ventrolla.

Ventrolla’s two-stage process begins with the renovation of the casement window. The second stage involves draught-proofing the window with our unique Perimeter Sealing System. Using the same materials we use on sliding sash windows ensures the same high quality performance.

The system is installed into either the frame of the casement window or the sash itself depending upon the construction of the casement window. If appropriate, the system can be installed into staff beads around the frame.

The pile carrier is routered into the timber giving a permanent fixing point and making the system an integral part of the window.

Casement windows have the same inherent 3mm gap that sash windows require to operate smoothly and can therefore suffer similar draught problems.

“A very professional, helpful company. Accommodating in terms of dates for the work to

be done. Thorough and professional.”

After rattling and draughty windows, the next big concern owners of period properties often have is energy efficiency.

Why choose us?Double & Secondary Glazing Solutions

We know that you would ideally like to preserve the charm and heritage that your timber windows add to your property, while also reducing the heat escaping from your home to help lower your energy bills. Ventrolla has developed a range of solutions, from slim double glazing to discreet secondary glazing that do just that.

Approved by English Heritage, Historic Scotland and CADW in Wales, we can even install these products into Listed properties and those within Conservation areas.

Ventrolla’s preferred double glazing solution for traditional timber sash windows is to replace the existing sashes with slim double glazed sashes, fitted into the existing box frame. This minimises the disruption and cost of redecoration, thus reducing the overall cost of the work.

Alternatively, we can manufacture and supply complete new double glazed windows that comply with Part L of the Building Regulations (Section 6 in Scotland).

Some common questions answeredWe know that deciding to renovate your timber windows might seem like a daunting task, so we’ve answered a few frequently asked questions for you.

Q. How much will it cost to renovate my windows?A. It depends how much work each window needs, but standard draught-proofing without replacing rotten sills, glazing, etc costs approximately £300 - £500 per window. Please call us for an accurate quote.

Q. How long will it take?A. The time taken will vary depending on the survey result. Typically we work to a one window per day time scale, although this rate can be increased to suit your requirements.

Q. Is it possible to install double glazing into my original sash windows?A. This depends entirely upon what type of window you have, however we have developed several solutions that could meet your requirements.

Q. Why shouldn't I replace my windows with plastic alternatives?A. Standard uPVC replacements can devalue your property and diminish the building’s original charm.

Q. Should I replace my existing timber windows with new timber windows?A. This is not usually necessary, however if renovation is not a viable option we can supply new timber windows that will match the original ones.

Q. Will renovation reduce outside noise levels?A. Noise is subjective, but our secondary glazing systems and the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System have been independently tested and proven to significantly reduce sound intrusion.

Q. How does the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System improve comfort levels?A. The main complaint we hear is draughty, rattling windows. Our VPSS seals the gap inherent in all timber sash windows eliminating draughts, rattles and reducing dust ingress and heat loss.

Q. What kind of wood do you use?A. We use a range of timber species, including a fast-growing, sustainably-sourced super wood called Accoya which features a 50 year guarantee and has been specifically designed to withstand the worst of the British weather.

What we’ve done – Case Study

A beautifully renovated farmhouse cottage, set in the rural landscape of Brompton-by-Sawdon, Scarborough, has benefitted three-fold from Ventrolla’s expertise.

The converted cottage, which dates back to the mid-18th century, was treated to an upgrade on its sash windows to remedy their deteriorating condition.

Homeowners, Mr and Mrs Smith, had experienced persistent problems with condensation and damp in the cottage, and opted for the original sashes to be upgraded with slim double glazed windows in order to combat the problems.

The renovation specialists fitted six sash windows with the double glazing solution and replaced one window sill after it was discovered to be rotten. This eliminated the troublesome draughts and rattles, reduced heat loss and external noise and banished the condensation.

To achieve these results, the work carried out involved routering out all the rotten timber from the original frame and sill, and restoring the sash with bespoke timber

replacements to preserve the windows’ period features.

The sash cords were then replaced, the pulleys serviced and the sashes correctly balanced to ensure smooth and safe operation.

Following the renovation process, the windows‘ performance was improved by installing the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System (VPSS) to draught-proof and enhance the energy efficiency of the farmhouse.

Mrs Smith said: “The windows were in a very bad condition when we first moved into the cottage and the awful condensation meant we needed expert help to address the problem.” “Ventrolla’s installers were superb - they carried out the work cleanly and efficiently and to a very high standard.

I would fully recommend them and not hesitate to have them back in my home in the future. Since the work was completed we have noticed how much quieter it is, and thankfully we are no longer woken up by the noisy Rooks outside!”

Environmental Benefits of Window Renovation• Uses up to 1/40th of the energy of replacement windows• Material sent to landfill is reduced• Use of finite resources is minimised• Invested energy or carbon store is retained

Compliance with Building Regulations Part L• If you repair a window, it does not have to comply with Part L – unless this involves a ‘change of use’• Listed buildings and Conservation area properties can have renovation improvements, providing the changes enhance the energy efficiency and do not alter the character or appearance of the building• The Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System eliminates draughts and provides energy savings, making it the ideal solution

Independently Tested• The Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System installed in a sash window achieved a 30% improvement in the Energy Rating• An independent live project test proved that installing the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System within a sash window, reduced the air-permeability and hence air-change rates by 20% down to 0.4 air-changes per hour• A sash window fitted with the Ventrolla Perimeter Sealing System fell within the 6-10 dB(A) noise reduction range, in acoustic terms this is deemed to provide a ‘significant noise reduction’

Renovating your original timber windows consumes up to 40 times LESS energy than replacement!

Green facts and independent testing

The process of renovating a window inherently retains much of the existing material, meaning far fewer resources are consumed. As a result the full lifetime environmental impact of a renovated window is much less than manufacturing and shipping a new uPVC unit.

Here we explain the facts behind renovation vs replacement.

“The windows exclude draughts very well and I have really felt the benefit of the

work carried out.We can now offer warm, bright

and cheerful rooms, spectacular views and a

quieter, less draughty stay.”
