    Seat Belt System

Reduces risk of fatal accidents by 45%

Rib and abdominal injuries may be suffered, especially if the seat belt is not correctly positioned.

    Types

    Two point seat belt

    Three point seat belt

    Height adjusters

Improve the seat belts' protective effect by

achieving correct belt geometry.Increase the ease and the comfort of use for car

occupants of above or below average height.

    Buckle

Must withstand forces of at least two tons.

must be easy to open even when heavily loaded.

    Retractor

Two locking sensors that work independently.

Vehicle sensor detects sudden deceleration of the vehicle.Webbing sensor detects violent pull-outs of webbing from the

    retractor.

    Pretensioners

Restrains an occupant as early as possible in a crash.

Reduce the load on the occupant in a violent crash.Tighten the belt during the very first fractions.

    Reduce the risk of "submarining.

How does an airbag work? (Contd)

In a frontal impact of sufficient severity (comparable to a collision into a

solid wall at 10-14 MPH or above), sensors in the vehicle detect thesudden deceleration and trigger the inflator module. This causes the solid

chemical propellant sealed inside the inflator, principally sodium azide,

to undergo a rapid chemical reaction. This reaction produces primarily

nitrogen gas, the same gas that makes up 80 percent of the air we

breathe. The gas inflates a woven nylon bag packed inside the steering

wheel hub or the instrument panel for the front seat passenger. The bag

inflates in less than one-twentieth of a second, splitting open itsprotective cover, and inflating in front of the occupant. As the occupant

contacts the bag, the nitrogen gas is vented through openings in the back

of the bag, which helps to cushion forward movement.

    Sideimpact airbag

Side-impact collisions account for a quarter of all injuries to car

    occupants.

Account for more than one third of the serious and fatal injuries.
