How my faith influences teaching As a lifelong Catholic, my faith informs

everything I do. It is important to model Christ-like behavior for students, with an

emphasis on kindness and service to others. This is incorporated into all our lessons, but

especially during literacy and Oregon Studies. It’s an honor and a blessing to lead students

on the journey.

RELIGION

*Study the Ten Commandments and review the 7 Sacraments - especially Baptism, Confirmation, and Reconciliation

*Prepare and participate in Liturgies, as well as locate and memorize Bible versus

*Discuss the lives of saints, and identify the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

*Study the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, and train for alter serving

ENGLISH

READING

*Identify setting, plot, theme, author’s purpose and text structure, as well as look for cause, effect, fact, and opinion

*Show comprehension by identifying context clues, paraphrasing, and summarizing

*Use main idea and supporting details to draw conclusions, make judgments, and generalizations

*Identify various genres and identify parts of a book, and begin research process with outlining and note taking

*Enhance skills of sequencing, comparing and contrasting, visualizing, and character identification

*Reinforce vocabulary building, dictionary skills, and reading diagrams and graphic sources

WRITING

*Write paragraphs with opening, closing and supporting sentences, as well as writing various friendly and formal letters

*Explore different style and mode of writing, and compose poetry in diverse styles

*Improve grammar usage and mechanics, study parts of speech; nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs

*Diagram sentences, continue working with spelling patterns, and using proper spelling for frequently spelled words, as well as practicing legible cursive handwriting

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

*Give oral reports, speeches, and practice speaking clearly and with feeling

*Use eye contact and practice active listening

SOCIAL STUDIES

*Study Oregon’s geography, regions, settlers and early history, as well as travel the Oregon Trail

*Explore Oregon today-work, life, and government

SCIENCE/HEALTH

*Use the Scientific Inquiry Process

*Explore how living and non-living things can be classified by their characteristics and properties

*Discover how living and non-living things undergo changes that involve force and energy

*Identify the 6 basic body systems, explain how they work, and describe how to care for them

*Identify healthy and safety rules, habits, practices, and use strategies from Steps to Respect, Second Step, and Talking about Touching

MATHEMATICS

*Read, write, order numbers through the millions, add and subtract greater numbers with carrying and borrowing

*Tell time to the minute and figure elapsed time

*Multiply greater numbers by two digit numbers, as well as divide by two digit numbers with and without remainders

*Use appropriate metric and customary units of measurement, also learn to demonstrate understanding of various graphing techniques

*Identify geometric figures, space and place figures, gain understanding of fractions, probability and decimals, as well as learn to select strategies for solving story problems

ART

*Increase awareness and sensitivity to elements of design; line, color, texture, form, space, shape, and value, also participate in art production; painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpturing, building and constructing

*Become aware of the principles of design; unity, emphasis balance, variety, pattern, rhythm, proportion and harmony

*Observe and interpret visual characteristics, learn to understand and value art contributions in a variety of different historical and cultural contents

*Enter various art contest
