Here is your opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade directly from the hiring source. Kendal will guide you through creating a resume that helps you stand out from the rest, interview etiquette and how you can make the most effective first impression.

Kendal Regan is an organizational development specialist who has worked in human resources for over 15 years. Recruitment has always been a passion of Kendal’s and during her time with one organization

they more than tripled its employee size. Kendal was once inspired to leave a position she no longer found rewarding through a Dr. Seuss quote: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose… - Dr. Seuss, “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”

Are you new to Canada or have a gap in your work experience and are wondering how to communicate this on your resume? Kendal will be available at the end of the seminar to answer these and other HR related questions.

1. Be strategic. Spend some time reviewing the employers’ profiles that are available in this program guide. Arrange the employers in order of priority, from highest to lowest. Pick a couple of the employers on the low end of your list and speak to them first. This will give you the opportunity to practice introducing yourself and asking questions.

2. Distribute your resume. Giving employers your resume or business card is a great way to make a connection and ensure they have your contact information.

3. Observe and listen to the questions others are asking when you’re waiting in line to speak to an employer so you don’t repeat the same ones.

4. Attend the free seminars being offered. Seminars are being held to help you prepare for the workforce. Come to these seminars prepared to take notes and ask questions to the expert presenters.

5. Missed the career fair? Most employers don’t hire on the spot at career fairs; if you missed Career Fair 2013, don’t fret. Spend time reviewing the profiles in the back of this book and visiting the company websites. Your dream job may be one click away.

Be strategic.

Distribute your resume.

Observe and listen.

• Catch the employer’s eye with solid highlights of the qualifications or a profile section that summarizes what you bring to the position at hand.

• Use technical lingo associated with the field.

• Use action words with your bullets to highlight your skills relevant to the position.

• List your qualifications and experience in order of importance related to the position for which you are applying.

• Create a visually impactful resume with good use of font. Avoid underlining.

• Keep your resume short. One or two page resumes are recommended. Most employers do not want to read anymore than that.

• Have your resume proofread for spelling, clarity and completeness. Spelling mistakes demonstrate a lack of attention to detail.

Keep it short.

Use action words.

Highlight your skills.
