1. Choose your sports

Think about athletic people in your church or community. Offer sports these people would like to lead. It’s a great chance to get new people involved, like college students and parents. You’ll need a gym, grassy area, or parking lot. If you have none of those, opt to use facilities at a park or school.

6 • Flag Football PLAYBOOK

You will demonstrate the skills and drills for the players this week. Prior to camp, read the Baseball Playbook and choose the drills you want to run. Keep in mind that players will have varying levels of baseball knowledge and skill. Think about ways you can adjust the drills to meet the needs of your players. Some drills are more suitable for younger or older kids and are marked as such. Most drills can be used with any age group.

Be aware of how well your players are learning a skill and how much they are enjoying a drill. Adjust the drills to help the kids learn and to keep them from becoming frustrated. Their MEGA Sports Camp experience should be fun!

Make sure you explain the rules of the game and always define the terms you use while you are teaching drills (a glossary is provided at the end of this playbook in easy-to-understand language). This will keep players interested and help them learn along the way.

Before MEGA Sports Camp begins:

Read this playbook. The activities have been tested in many settings to make sure they work with kids.

Examine the cheerleading facility. Keep the setting in mind as you plan the daily activities.

Attend the MEGA Sports Camp Volunteer Training. Meet the Huddle Coaches who will help at the cheerleading Sports Sessions. Allow them to look over the Cheerleading Playbook if they would like to become familiar with the activities.

Watch the Cheer Training DVD to become familiar with the cheer routines. Encourage your Huddle Coaches to watch the DVD as well. The Cheer Training DVD and the Cheer Music CD provide the words to the chants and the cheers that you will teach throughout camp.

Check with the Camp Director for how to handle sports injuries. Record the plan on the safety page of this playbook (page 12).

HEAD COACH CHECKLIST

KEEPINGKIDS SAFE

Include the safety and injury plans for your MEGA Sports Camp below. These should be provided by the Camp Director.

BASKETBALL SAFETYUse cones (or half cones) to defi ne the space used for a drill. This will organize practice spaces and improve safety by reducing collisions or players being hit by passed balls.

If your camp is large enough for older and younger groups, we recommend smaller basketballs for the younger players.

Use good safety techniques:

• In passing drills, have players throw in the same direction at the same time.

• Space players far enough apart to avoid wild passes hitting other players.

Make sure kids understand you have a zero-tolerance policy for any rough physical contact.

INJURY PLAN

18 • SOCCER PLAYBOOK

Do not form teams. Give each kid a pinny and have him tuck it into the back of his shorts to make a “tail” that is long enough to swing back and forth. Set boundaries with cones in relationship to the size of your group. Give each kid a ball. Explain the game:1. Each player dribbles and tries to protect

his tail while trying to pull out the tails of other players.

2. A player may not hold his tail to protect it. When a player pulls out a tail, he throws it to the ground. The player who has lost his tail must kneel where the tail landed until the game ends. He may steal tails from other players who come within reach of his kneeling spot. He may not leave his knees.

3. The last person with a tail wins.

VARIATIONS: Play the game with designated tail colors. Allow the girls to play against the boys.

INTRODUCTION:Emphasize three key points about dribbling:1. Players must change speeds.2. They must change direction.3. They must keep their heads up as they dribble. This is crucial to

creative play.

Use any of the following drills during the technical session. They should be mixed in and around your instructional time on dribbling. Choose the ones that best fi t your group and plan.
