Prepare:

Music Crafts Missions

Write the words Glory, Holy, Splendor, Hallelujah and Mercy on the 5 yellow sheets of paper (one word largely printed on each sheet).

Cut apart the Daily Bible Content Cards (see attachment at the end of the teaching plan) and enlarge each card onto one sheet. Place the five cards into the accordion folder.

Label the brown accordion folder “Survival Guide” (written or printed out).

Letter “He’s the Way” on the poster (use print out or cut out letters or write with sharpie).

Samples of all 15 daily craft options and the 3-5 day project

Signs identifying the crafts for each session

Cut 5 stems and leaves from green craft paper. Label the stems: "Day1, Day 2, etc."

Draw the symbol for Day 1 in the bottom of a bowl. Print these elements on the backs of matching plates: o Session Title o Bible Study Bullet

Points o Christ Connection o Today's Point o Prayer Suggestions

Do the same for Days 2-5. Place Day 3 ‘pedals’ under chairs.

Cut apart the tongue tanglers (see below).

Create a map board to review each days’ Bible story, Christ Connection, and point. You can use LifeWay’s bulletin board punch outs to help create this.

“Stay on Track” handout -one per conferee

Handout: Guidelines for Choosing Crafts

Handout 1 – Tongue Tanglers (1 for each 4 leaders)

Focus Wall Description: Music at Rushing Waters- Display the Music Rotation Leader Guide with DVD. Gather journey items such as… dragonflies, butterflies, bugs, compass, binoculars, canteen, maps, backpacks, and bandanas. Consider using the VBS 2015 Tablecloth. Crafts at Shady Grove- Hang the "Shady Grove" panel of the VBS 2015 Super Duper Sized Backdrop (82V15) or create a background of trees, vines and flowers using suggestions from VBS 2015 Decorating Made Easy (5V15). Missions at Boulder Bridge- Cut brown and gray paper into stone shapes. Use the stone shapes to create an arch or bridge shape on the focal wall. Use paper bags or boxes to create stones and place them near the bottom of the bridge to give a 3-D effect. Tape the scripture and motto on the focal wall near the bridge.

Room Setup Description:

Place chairs around tables- one for each participant.

Cover the tables with the VBS tablecloths or other tablecloths to match the décor.

Place 1-2 tables at the front to display materials.

On the front table, place the materials needed (leader guides, craft examples, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.) for each rotation.

Place the chairs in a semi-circle around the focus areas so all participants can see the rotations.

At each chair, place the VBS Rotation materials your group will use.

Conferees will need to be able to see the TV or projector for the videos and presentation. Decorations Suggestions: Music at Rushing Waters-

Create the atmosphere of “Rushing Waters” with light blue and white paper, plastic or cloth draped from the wall or ceilings to look like the falls. Cover items with gray paper to mimic large rocks or spray paint cut foam in rock shapes. Consider some of the recommendations found on page 29 of the leader guide.

Crafts at Shady Grove- Use these ideas as you choose to create excitement about Shady Grove:

Use trees, vines, and large flowers to create the "Shady Grove."

See page 4 of the VBS 2015 Craft Rotation Leader Guide (50V15) and VBS 2015 Decorating Made Easy (5V15) for more decorating suggestions.

Missions at Boulder Bridge- Use these ideas as you choose to create excitement about Boulder Bridge:

Create large boulders from boxes and brown or gray paper. Set the boulders near the doorway.

Make a Boulder Bridge sign by printing words on brown paper. Cut brown paper to make a sign post. Tape the sign post and sign beside the doorway. (Use the clip art online to make a sign. Or use the sign from the VBS 2015 Rotation Signs.)

Place a few stones or boulders (made from boxes or paper bags) around the room. Add dried pods or silk plants in and around the stones. (Consider spray painting the pods in bright colors.)

Hang the VBS 2015 Inflatable Dragonfly or the VBS 2015 Bug Gliders from the ceiling.

Use the VBS 2015 Floor Prints to create a path into the room.

Add to the wall decor using VBS 2015 Wall Art, VBS 2015 Super Duper Sized Backdrop, or the VBS 2015 Visual Pack.

See the VBS 2015 Mission Rotation Leader Guide with DVD and the VBS 2015 Decorating Made Easy for more ideas. Audio Visual Needs:

DVD player and TV or Computer and Projector

Cables to connect computer to projector

Portable speakers

Large screen

CD player

Teaching Steps: 1. Welcome 2. Prep for Leading VBS o Give quick overview of materials:

o “The Music Rotation Leader Guide with DVD is much like years past. Each day is outlined with an overview of the Bible story the children will hear at the Tangled Branch Tree House. The lesson plan is laid out for teaching the music and choreography. The DVD that comes with the leader guide has instructions for choreography, performance videos and lyrics.

o “The Mission Rotation Leader Guide with DVD is similar to last year. Each day is outlined into the Need to Know, Welcome, Tongue Tangler Truth, Mission Story, Activity, Mission Story, Activity, and then Debrief and Closing (Mountain Top Prayer Moment).

o Crafts has the Leader Rotation Guide like last year and has at least 3 different options for each day. There is also only one craft kit per day. Preschool, VBX, Youth and Adults all have different craft options as well. Please refer to those leader guides for those options.

o Note the change: o Music-This year you will notice there is no sign language in the choreography! No

worries about getting anything backwards or if the children (or you) go to the left or right, as long as you’re together! Focus is on worshiping God.

o Crafts: The templates are in the back of the book.

3. Presentation Overview Here at the Rushing Waters, Boulder Bridge, or Shady Cove on our Journey off the Map, kids

will engage in fun songs, mission stories, and crafts that will reinforce the biblical truths from their Bible study time at the Tangled Branch Tree House. The first day of VBS will establish Jesus as our ultimate guide for life. On days 2-4, kids will explore stories from the book of Daniel that show how Daniel and his friends followed and trusted God, even in the face of uncertainty. Then on day 5 kids learn that our journey is part of a much bigger story that includes God’s promises of things to come. We are going to review the daily Bible content together and then highlight the songs, mission stories, and craft projects as well as some of the activities you will be teaching during the week of VBS.

Day 1: Know Your Guide o Review Day 1 Bible Story, Bible verse, Today’s Point, the Christ Connection, and the

Connection Points using the PowerPoint slides. o Play the Jesus is Our Guide performance video and have participants follow along. o Pass out the CRAFTS handout and go over the important reminders of choosing

craft options for children C- IS the craft something the child will value? R- Does the craft reinforce the Bible study? A- Is the craft affordable? F- Is the craft fun? T- Can the craft be completed in the time allotted? S- Are the supplies available?

o Show the 3 craft options for Day 1- Jesus is our Guide. Explain the time it takes, the materials, and the cost of each craft.

OBSERVATIONS & SUGGESTIONS: The fraying step needs to be done before the painting.

Use disposable plastic serving glove to keep hands clean while pressing the sponge.

o Introduce the 2 missionaries we will be learning about during Mission time. Say: “At Boulder Bridge each day, kids will hear about kids that are journeying

off the map to tell people about Jesus. Eddie and his friends are following their Guide in Fontana, California. Let’s meet these guys.” Play Day 1, Eddie’s Journey from the DVD.

o Point out the Missions stories in the Missions Rotation Leader Book on pages 21-23. Talk about how leaders can use these summaries to help them review past days’ stories.

Day 3: Trust Your Guide o Use the flower plates/ bowl to review Day 3 principles and Bible Story. Ask

participants who have the plates under their chairs to read aloud the review points and place the pedals on the flower’s center.

o Dim the lights and spotlight the “He’s the Way” sign at the front. Explain to conferees that the Day 3 song spotlights the most important message the kids will hear all week: Jesus, “He’s the Way, the only way to Heaven.” This is our A-B-C song day.

o Ask for a volunteer to share what the “A” stands for and follow with volunteers for “B” and “C.” Invite them to join you at the front. Demonstrate the motions for the ABC’s from the song. Ask if there are any musicians in the room. Have them (2-3) come join you at the front as well and show them how they will lead everyone in playing

their best air guitar. o Invite everyone to stand and join the others in the ABC motions and air guitar while

you show the lyrics video of “He’s the Way.” Tell them that the Bible story for the day is the fiery furnace, so this song has some fire to it!

OBSERVATIONS & SUGGESTIONS:

We also tried bandannas, but they were harder to tie than the fleece.

It is easier to see which fringe to tie if the front and back are different colors. The first grade girl was able to finish the pillow that had 3 sides tied in advance.

Sew 3 sides and let them tie the 4th to make the prep go a lot faster.

o Give a brief update on Eddie and Gracie. Eddie- The Bible study is growing and a girl named Nina came over because

a friend kept inviting her. She had a secret life of drugs and other bad habits. After coming to Bible study a few times, she realized that she needed Jesus and accepted him and was baptized.

Gracie- Gracie is seeing a struggle in the Basotho people learning to trust. They have believed in something else for so long that learning to trust this “new God” is hard. Some, however, are coming to realize that the Lord is the one and True God and are being baptized.

o Discuss ways to connect Eddie and Gracie’s stories to the Bible story for Day 3.

Day 4: Stay On Track o Review Day 4’s Bible story and principles using the PowerPoint slides. Talk about

Craft Pack: $0.55

OBSERVATIONS & SUGGESTIONS: Steps #1 & #3 were moved from Advance Preparation to things the kids will do. Time will be

considerably longer with these added.

Real twigs would look great.

o Give everyone a Tongue Tangler. Have them find another conferee who has the same Tongue Tangler and share an experience when they were able to stay on track in a difficult situation.

Day 5: Keep Watching o Review the Bible story and principles using the PowerPoint slides. o Ask five conferees to come up and give each one a “word” to hold (on the yellow

paper). Call out the word Glory and have the conferee hold up that word. Invite conferees to give words that describe its meaning. Continue through all five words.

o Our song for Day 5 uses these five words. This activity is designed to help the kids better understand what each word means. As you read through the lyrics on pages 31- 35 of your leader guide, you may note other words or phrases that, based on the age group, may also need clarifying. Always take a moment to explain and put things on their level of understanding - from what a banner is on day one to the final hallelujah of day five.

OBSERVATIONS & SUGGESTIONS:

This needs 2 strips of magnetic tape or a stronger magnet to hold the weight.

o Pass out a story stone to everyone and have them write a symbol or picture to

represent something about them to remind them how God has used them or something about their own story.

o Discuss Eddie and Gracie’s journeys and how God has moved in their lives. While both families are on opposite sides of the world, God is continuing to work and they are looking for how God will use them and move them in the future.

4. Review

Note that the Leader Guides have additional tips and suggestions in the margins. Helpful articles are included to guide teachers in leading children to Christ, conducting VBS, and decorating the rotation stations.

Point out the decorating suggestions in the different leader guides. Invite participants to share their own ideas and suggestions.

There are also fabulous helps on the Lifeway VBS website. Display the website, click on the Rotations tab and then Music. Walk conferees through the page and then show the decorating tips video if time.

Allow conferees to ask questions regarding the rotations for VBS 2015. Entertain ideas and suggestions for structuring the session for churches with a scaled-back

or extended schedule.

5. Closing

Pass out Map Markers to each conferee. Have them write their name on the front of the marker and a prayer request on the back. Have them exchange the marker with another conferee.

Say, “You are helping kids know, trust and follow Jesus as their ultimate guide this year in Journey off the Map. When kids learn to obey and follow God, it changes the course of their life, their family’s life, and even the community and world. Let’s pray for kids, leaders and churches to listen for God’s command from our VBS Scripture: ‘This is the way’ and then choose to ‘Walk in it.’
