Migrant Boats Mini Challenge

• Dataset– Logs of landings or interception by Coast Guard– Launch point / landing point / type of vessel / date /

passengers / whether or not intercepted

• Questions– Describe pattern of landing and interdictions and how

they change over time?

• Ground Truth– Straight forward. No real trap but risk of misjudging

relative importance of certain things

Map or no map?

Grid with lat/long coordinates (Beijing team)

Many used Google EarthSome: own GISSome: no map, or optional.

Nevac could move insert (e.g Mexico area) closer for more compact map.

• Animation– Those who relied solely on animation missed the large number

of Mexico landings (they overlapped in a very small area)

• Timelines

Thoroughness of analysis

(Tacc team) X is time, Y latitudeBlack lines are coast guard patrol traces)

• Some teams provided the minimum answers • Other looked at the data in a very thorough fashion looking at every angles of the data (e.g. Palantir team).• Few gave suggestions: better patrolling areas for Coast Guard
