March 2007 Dear Members and Friends: Thanks to your support in 2006, the Land Trust had another banner year. We are particularly pleased to announce the creation of the new 33-acre Paradise Valley Preserve. This reach of Judd Creek holds the Island’s best spawning grounds for Coho and Chum salmon and is host to the rare native Pearlshell mussel. The other 2006 highlights were: • We undertook a major habitat restoration effort in Shinglemill Creek, placing 58 logs and root balls in the creek. The long history of logging in this steep and sandy watershed will require many years more of diligent restoration efforts. • We extended the Fisher Pond trail by building a leg all the way to Cove Road. Many of you have commented on how much you love this new walk. • We worked with King County to protect three acres of estuarine wetland at the mouth of Ellis Creek. This area provides a feeding refuge for juvenile Chinook salmon as they migrate along our marine shorelines. • We partnered with the Vashon Park District to host three interns for the summer from the Student Conservation Association. The recent college grads came from across the country to spend 12 weeks working on conservation and restoration projects on the Island’s many parks and preserves. This summer we will be welcoming a new crew of interns to Vashon. • We teamed up with King County and the Cascade Land Conservancy to launch an effort to protect marine shorelines on Maury Island and in Quartermaster Harbor. Healthy shorelines support the life cycle of Pacific herring, surf scoters, Western grebes, much more. We also did a lot of looking forward in 2006. The Land Trust now has a fresh 5-year strategic plan, and we worked with King County to identify key areas for habitat conservation in the years ahead. We also created an endowment to assure that the good works of the Land Trust will be sustained in future decades. These are substantial accomplishments, made possible through the efforts of our members, volunteers, board and staff. We remain extremely grateful to you, our members and friends, for your continuing support and confidence. 2006 went out with a bang! The December wind storm cancelled our Holiday Open House – but join us for a reprieve on Wednesday, March 28th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Land Trust building (see enclosed invitation). March 2007Dear Members and Friends:

Thanks to your support in 2006, the Land Trust had another banner year. We are particularly pleased to announce the creation of the new 33-acre Paradise Valley Preserve. This reach of Judd Creek holds the Island’s best spawning grounds for Coho and Chum salmon and is host to the rare native Pearlshell mussel. The other 2006 highlights were:

• We undertook a major habitat restoration effort in Shinglemill Creek, placing 58 logs and root balls in the creek.

Healthy shorelines support the life cycle of Pacifi c herring, surf scoters, Western grebes, much more.

We also did a lot of looking forward in 2006. The Land Trust now has a fresh 5-year strategic plan, and we worked with King County to identify key areas for habitat conservation in the years ahead. We also created an

endowment to assure that the good works of the Land Trust will be sustained in future decades. These are substantial accomplishments, made possible through the efforts of our members, volunteers, board and staff. We remain extremely grateful to you, our members and friends, for your continuing support and confi dence. 2006 went out with a bang! The December wind storm cancelled our Holiday Open House – but join us for a reprieve on Wednesday, March 28th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Land Trust building (see enclosed invitation). Please drop by – we’d like to know about your priorities as we move ahead.

August marked a new level of ability for the Land Trust Stewardship Program as we placed “large woody debris” in Shinglemill Creek to restore salmon spawning habitat. Photo © Ray Pfortner, [email protected]
