Feel likes home Irene is from Milan. She is half Italian half Bulgaria. She usually go to Verna to see her grand mother and usually have Sunday meal together with her family. Her favorite food is Pizza. When she moved here, she have to start cooking on her own. She love cooking although she might not be so good at it. the funny thing about our group is that no one is from Scotland. Irene is from Italy, Dominick is from Poland, John is from England, Akio is from Japan and I’m from Thailand. This is why we all know what is the best solution of get-ting homesickness away, to eat your favorite food while having fun together with your friends. So we decided to do a little bit of cooking together where everyone have to cook their own traditional food!

Feel likes homeFeel like us.

It is not just cooking that will cure the homesick away. We think that it is the fun of cooking that took it away. In the end, we have an idea to make her a little gift. A gift that will remind her of us and our food. I’m from Thailand, so my food is quite spicy and that is the smell of chilli. Dominick is Cinnamon, John is Dill, Akio is Greentea and Irene is Rosemary. I designed this gift into a cube where each side have it own distinctive smell. The side that call “Home” is where every ingredient got mixed up together. So that she will remember us wherever she go. 02

IDENTITY and BRANDThe Good, The Bad, and The Visually Ambiguous.

Good - Although the cross is in green, its still suggest-ed that it got something to do with medicine. Bad - Do I really have to explain?

Ambiguous - Simple and Clear but only to those who knows04

The aim of this project is to challenge the under-standing of nature and value of object in everyday life. Learning how we connect with objects and how they connect with us. This project, instead of thinking purely about the product, it is all about understanding and apprici-ate human relationship and learning to enchance that realtionship by using object. Student have to come up with their own senario then use that senario to make an object or set of objects to enchance that senario.

Actual Reality

Page 8: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

My story is the story of two computer geeks, Tom and Jim. They’re like best friends in the real world and in the virtual world. Because they don’t socialize in the real world, all they got is just each other and some few geeks that they met on the internet. After they got accepted from the universities of their choice, they know that they’re going to split up in the next few weeks. Tom always wanted to say thanks to Jim as well as sorry to what he have done in the past but it is quite tricky. Not only that they are guy which mean expressing something like love, hate or sympathy is quite hard and since they’re computer geek. It’s hopeless. Tom know what he wanted to say because he been thinking about it but he just cannot find the right place, right time and the right ‘way’ to start the conversation. He felt that typing it on Facebook would be so much easier without having to get the right time, right place and the right con-versation One day, he thought of going camping in the forest close to their house which he think it is going to be great because they never been camping before, so its like travelling somewhere together, and it would be so much easier to have this open up conversation in the place that there is only two of them so no one would be able to sneak up and piss them off the next day. Since they never been camping before, the went on google, wikihow, expert village, watching bear gyll and go to hiking webboard. So after all the preparation they went into the jungle, walk around and setting up camp using the popup tent and the took about 3 hr to get the camp fire up. Tom bring out his best beer for him and Jim, Guiness, and he brought out his glass and ask Jim to look at it.

The story of two geeks and how they say goodbye.

Page 9: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

You look confused and I’m not surpirse. People spent most of their live living in one enviroment, in this case, their room.

What is in the room of computer geeks? Computer, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Speaker, Ash tray, Left over food, Plate, Cutery, etc ... What sound do they hear? Music, People talking, Mouse click, Keyboard pressing, Chair moving. What do they touch mostly? Mouse and Keyboard. What do they here when there was slient? Keyboard and mouse click. Do they talk or type more? Computer geeks type not talks.

It is syntetic. It is unreal, It is never change.

The sense, the connection and the object

07

Page 10: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

When they go camping, what happen? What do they smell and touch? Dirt, Grass, Wind, River, Animal. How does it feel? Cold, Wet, Warm, Rough, Organic, Smooth Hard, Soft. What can they hear? Animal, Tree, Winds, Ground, Fire, Twig Slience, Loud, What can they see? Vibrant Color, Light, Darkness, Movement. What are the feeling? Exciting, Fear, Scare, Happy, Worried,Alive.

It is Vibrant. It is Real and It is everchanging.

There is no more button, no more click Only you and your body.

The sense, the connection and the object

08

Page 11: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

There is no more connection. But there, you could bring it back. If you could feel it. If you could touch it. If you could get it going. If you could speak it like you type it.

Remember, there are Jim and Tom They were both computer geeks. Tom doesn’t know how to start. He hand this glass over to Jim. Jim then solve the missing puzzle. “THANKS JIM” Tom ask him to hand the glass back. Then he hold it like he would type it. Tom start typing and the sound flow through his mouth,

Technologyproject,

SLEEPWALKING

Collaboration project with School of informatics, University of Edinburgh

The aim is to find new uses of Speck technology in term of health care service. In this project, students were asked to work in a group of two or three in order to explore and select one study area in health-care service. We, Varut Rintanalert and Lottie Burnley, were interested in sleep walking. We spent 3 weeks in order to come up with a product and a service that will help sleepwalkers to live safely around the others.

Why Sleepwalking?

About 2-4% of adults suffer from sleepwalking, it is much more prevalent amongst children, (15%)

Sleepwalking is often connected to more serious psychological problems, but it can also be linked to very sim-ple problems such as stress.

Sleepwalkers are usually harmless. But parasomnias occasionally lead to reckless actions, self-injury, and even violence against others. Enter the “sleep-walking defense,” a legal argument that a criminal defendant isn’t culpable because he or she acted while in a sleep-like state, without consciousness or intent to commit a crime. There were seven cases of murder around the world 12

Page 15: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Understanding the situation Looking at extreme cases

This is where we studied the most extreme cases of sleepwalking in order to created a new service that will improve their life. Extreme cases are the most interesting of all. We had studied 3 cases which were Kenneth Parks (sleep murder) ,Cain Brian (sleepwalker) and Anna Ryan (sleep eater). These gave us many insight of how the service can be created and implemented using SPECK and computer software. In this page, you can see the first attempted of how the service can be used. In this project, I was in charge of designing how the software for the service will be used, look and operate on.

13

Page 16: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

These two on the left show how the service will be used. The white sheet illustrated the service for the software on the computer and the post-it notes on the right forthe service on the mobile phone. These are Map, Alert system, short version of nightly sum-mary as well as simple recom-mendation services will be provided over the phone.

These post-it note at the bottom illustrated how the software will work on the computer. Services that will be provided are graph of nightly activity over time, real time tracking system, nightly summary, Recommenda-tion, FAQ and contacting doctor system.

Making it real Mobile Phone services

These are the screens that will be displayed on the mobile phone as part of SleepDoctor service. Because each user might have different kind of phones with different screen sizes, we have to make sure that everyone can use SleepDoctor without having any problem with their mobile phone. Simple, short and clear instructions become the main aspect of SleepDoctor’s mobile phone services.

Making it real SPECK Technology

Here is how SPECK technology can be used. SPECK will be tailored to suit each user life style. In this case, we looked at Kenneth Parks. He usually wear a watch when he’s going to bed. This allowed us to implement SPECK as a watch’s strap behind his watch so that SleepDoc-tor can analyse and track his location during the night. This data can be passed on to the doctor, local GP or sleep expert for further analysis and checkups. 18

Page 21: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Making it works How the whole service operates

19

Page 22: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Conclusion Ultimately through introducing this service using SPECK technology we in-tend to provide a way for suffers to diag-nose and monitor their condition, in a way that is currently not possible, enabling them to live their lives as normal as they can without having to interfere with their privacy Every service have good and bad points. This service in particular will re-quire a lot of co-operation from the patient to regularly check and wear SPECK be-fore going to bed. The data can also be fake as other people can wear it instead of the patient. During this project, we had contact-ed Dr.Chris Idzikowski, a leading expert in sleep at Edinburgh sleep center. He is very pleased with the service that we came up although it was quite unfortunate that we did not have a chance to put it forward and make it to a real and function-able service.

CORDINERS’ PROJECT WEARABLE

21

Page 24: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Explore The Future Application For Leather

The cordiners Guild of the Trades House of Glasgow has existed since 16th century to represent the interests of the various local craftmen and busi-nesses working in the field of leather work. The last few decades has seen a slow and steady decline in the number of indigenous businesses operating in the production of leather goods, both at city-wide and national level

While the evolution of civilisation has witnessed the emergence and subsequent disapperance of many technological material ‘phenomena’, the use of leather in certain application has yet to be superseded, so it is worth considering the factors that have led to its enduring popularity. A set of quite particular physical attributes are part of the story, but the cultrual and social associations to leather, both at conscious and subconscious level, are without doubt an important contributory factor to our contriuing use of this materialThis project seeks to explore and understnad these 2 factors of leather, to find the point of intersection and build from this conver-gence a family of speculative leather ‘wearable’ products for the 21 st century.

22

Page 25: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

One aspect of leather is that once its getting older, the leather will get richer. This is why leather products have been pass down from generation to generation. However, not only leather products that got passed down, things like watch, jewellery or even storage box got passed down as well. This is where I looked outside the sphere of ‘leather’ to gain more understanding about the aspect of inheritance and making your own marks before you pass it on again.

Understanding Material’s Value

23

Page 26: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

This is where I starting to look at the problems when passing down objects like leather. Because the object from the past cannot be changed and that is why people do not want to use it. It might be out of fashion, not suitable for current usage or it might be that some of the parts have gone missing. This is an opportunity to create something that allow the user to change, customize and make their own leather product. So that user can enjoy the richness of leather that ages through time.

Realising the potential

24

Page 27: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

This is the drawing of the first prototype. Each leather piece is joined by metal screw. The user is able to assemble or disassemble the bag by screw or unscrewing the lock. The leather can be changed according to the user’s desire however it must be able to work with this system. 25

Page 28: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Paper prototypes were created by using the sys-tem. It is possible to cre-ate different sizes, func-tion and style by attaching different pieces together.

Example of additional pieces

Change from hole to cross-cut since its gives better grip on the lock. Leather thread is now used instead of staple and split pin to give more strength to the lock. Leatherboard is now used as the main piece of the system. 27

Advertisment

The advertising aspect of this product is trying to promote the past and the present in a simplest way possible. The advertisement will make the observer question, what is it? and what is the relation-ship between the product and the past? The first advert is rather too simple and does not say anything about the past nor the present al-though the text is at the bottom but it does not make any sense. It just a bag, a normal bag with higher quality. The second advert is even worse, the text did not go along with the picture that is why on the forth adverts both of them has been used. Painting is included on the third and fourth adverts to show the relationship between the past and the present.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th

The last advert changes both text and painting. The text has been changed to “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change” by Charles Darwin. This is because it states clear intention of the product as well as the advantage points of the product, the ability to change and to pass it on from generation to gen-eration. The painting then change to photograph, this is due to the fact that the painting is about digging deep into the past. it digs in too deep as its refer back to the Victorian era. Photograph, in the other hand, is more real since its easier to understand and based at the current time scale so that people can still refer back to themselves. 30

Page 33: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Conclusion The product clearly demonstrate its ability for total customization. It can become a fashionable object, although it does not meant to, as well as a time-less object. The project had been very demanding not because it is for the cordiner but because I can see that this system can be made and put into real production. This is why I had to keep refining the system and exploring what the system can do until the very end. The bad point though is that this is a system that required the user to understand that this is not only a system for making different kind of bag, it is a system that provided a platform for total customization. It can be a bag, wallet, strap, hat, belt etc... The construction of the object can affect its durability. User have to make sure that every knot their tie and every lock they used must be tighten and check before they use because it can become loose overtime. This project has won the cordiners’ award. The system will then be put into real production

This is the swap between The Macintoshs bar in ‘Old english’ with Apple store font in ‘Helvetica’. The Ma-cintoshs’ bar has been changed into Helvetica by using photoshop since we cannot make the whole sign in a day. Apple is then change into Old English style - to Apple. We came up with a new sign for apple so that it goes well with the text and we also made an ‘Old english’ version of the iPhone. We have to actually go inside the apple store to get this photo taken and we did got a little complaint from the staff but its was fun.

Cross school project We got Cumbernauld as our area. Cumbernauld was build in 1946 as a population overspill for Glasgow city. it is the most clear example of a utopian new town in the UK. People and car were sys-tematically separated. Cumbernauld pio-neered design for underpass and pedes-trian’s footbridge as well as segregated footpath. Cumbernauld has 2 - 3 shopping centres which are the town center, Tesco and ASDA. This is the reason why the town is filled with shopping trolleys The condition of the housing area was in a pretty bad condition due to the fact that there is no one to take care of them. When you are walking on the main walkway you would feel like you’re invad-ing someone back garden. This is due to the fact that the housing estates are situ-ated right beside it. Cumbernauld is lifeless and dull. Its does not have any sense of cummunity, no shop, church or pub for the community to exchange idea but all you get is shop-ping center where everyone seem to be on their own and does not want to interact with anyone else.

Varut Rintanalert

33

Page 36: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Convergent and Divergent thinkingThis is where we did our brainstromming process to get the most idea out as possible. This method was introduce to the group by two product deisgners, me and Daniel. Reducing them to 5 idea which were trolley race, trolley farm, pimp my trolley, making fence using the material from shopping trolley and blocking the underpass with trolleys. In the end we chose to do a trolley race.

I got given to look at how the trolley’s fence might work. So what I did was photoshopping the shopping trolley’s parts into the picture to see the effect.

Varut Rintanalert

34

Page 37: Varut Rintanalert Mid Year Computer

Reason and Result

The reason why we did a shopping trolley race is not only because there are shopping trolleys lying around all over the place, but this town has been destroyed by the exis-tence of the massive shopping center that stripping the community feeling away from the town and replace it with consumerism. By doing the shopping trolley race, we hope that we can help bringing the community back together and turn this lifeless town into a place that is full of energy, joy and excitement. Although townfolks were very confused and wondered what was going on there but there was some smile and laugther that we can see it from their face!

I designed and made the trophy for the winner as well. I made this trophy a little funny purely because it is not that trophy that is important but it is the spirit and the race that is more important than anything.
