When people say “solar fountain,” they could mean a lot of things: a solar fountain with a separate panel, a solar fountain with a built in panel, a battery powered solar fountain, or a solar fountain with battery backup. These are nice because they require zero energy costs. Run a fountain for free! The downside is that the water pump’s performance is entirely dependent on sunny conditions. If it’s a really cloudy day, your fountain may just barely trickle. It also means that you can’t run this kind of fountain at night.

The Battery Powered Fountain with Solar Charge- This means that the fountain is battery operated but uses solar energy to recharge the batteries. These are nice because you can run the

fountain whenever you want: at night, on a cloudy day, during a thunderstorm. The downside is that thefountain will only run as long as the battery life—usually 4 to 6 hours. It also means that you need good sunny days to recharge the batteries.

Solar-on-Demand Fountain- This is a fancy way of saying that this is a solar and a battery powered fountain! The two power sources team up to give you a more consistent fountain. During the day, the fountain will be powered by solar energy, and the excess energy goes to recharge the battery. Then, when it gets overcast or at night, you can switch the mode to be powered by the internal battery pack. Slick, right? It gives you all of the benefits of a solar fountain without the restrictions. Needless to say, this is the most popular type of solar fountain.
