Chor Leoni believes in the transformative power of male choral singing and this inaugural VanMan Male Choral Summit is a new and wonderful expression of this belief. Now in its fifth year, our ten-week MYVOICE educational program has grown to over �00 men, who gather for ten weeks under the direction of Les Nerling, Carrie Taylor and Frank Lee (some of the best music educators in the Lower Mainland) to experience, first hand, the joy, beauty and brotherhood which can come from singing with other guys. We are so fortunate to be able to offer this program at no charge to the singers through the generous support of RBC Foundation, Alix Brown and BC Gaming.

As amazing as our MYVOICE program is, it was my dream to connect these young men in performance with a full representation of the culture of male singing that thrives in our backyard. To this end, we have spent today in our first VanMan Male Choral Summit. This day has brought five choirs and over 350 men together to share each choir’s own talents as well as the joy of making music as a community of male singers.

It is my contention that creating a culture of male singing builds bonds and bridges that can find their way into the rest of our community. I hope that this Summit can be one small step toward making our world a better place through singing. Thanks to everyone for sharing in this dream and vision.

Chor Leoni’s MYVoice Program brings teenage boys aged �� – �0 from across Metro Vancouver to experience the joy and camaraderie of singing in an all-male choir. The aim is to learn music, find their voices, nurture their interest in music and culture, build confidence, have fun along the way, and send them back to their various school choirs as better singers. By removing all costs to participants and requiring a relatively short-term time commitment, MYVoice builds upon and strengthens the fine work achieved by music teachers throughout the area.

Carrie Taylor studied music at the University of Mary in Bismark, North Dakota and at the University of Victoria in Victoria, BC, obtaining her Bachelor of Music and Professional Teaching Certificate. She has also studied at the Banff School of the Fine Arts. Carrie has been teaching in the public school system for �5 years. She began her teaching career in Coquitlam, and is currently teaching in Burnaby, where she enjoys teaching both band and choir. Carrie has also been the coordinator for the BC Provincial Honour Choir for the past several years.

In the past, Carrie worked with the New Westminster and District Community Band and especially enjoyed the challenge of teaching several generations within the same group. When Carrie and two friends formed

the Vivo Children’s Choir, Carrie gave up the New Westminster Band in order to focus on the choir. Carrie, her husband Brent, and their three boys Evan, Aksel, and Grayson live in New Westminster.

Frank Lee is in his sixteenth season as the choral director at Seycove Secondary School in North Vancouver, where he directs seven choral ensembles and a jazz studies course. The Seycove Chamber Choir was honoured with the distinction of Youth Choir of the World at the International Choral Festival, Kathaumixw, in �007. In �009 the Chorale was named top choir at the Canadian National Choral Festival and had their solo debut concert in 2011 at Carnegie Hall. His award winning vocal jazz ensembles have been featured in Western Canada and and Washington State. Frank received his undergraduate music degree from the University of Victoria studying trombone with Ian McDougall. He is currently a graduate music student studying choral conducting, under Dr. Graeme Langager, at the University of British Columbia. He is sought after as a clinician across

Canada and Washington State. Frank has served as the chair for the BCMEA Honour Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Kiwanis Vocal Jazz Festival and is currently on the Canadian Rocky Mountain Music Festival Advisory Committee.

Les Nerling has always had a strong affinity for music. As a three-year old he would play his older brother’s songs at the piano, completely by ear (needless to say, older brother was not impressed). He studied piano throughout his youth and engaged in every musical outlet available to him in school, church, and the community. It was his Grade 9 high school music teacher who awakened Mr. Nerling’s own calling to music education.

Mr. Nerling holds a Bachelors of Music in Voice and Music Education and a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting, all from McGill University. He also has an Orchestral Conducting Diploma from the esteemed Hochschule für Musik in Vienna. Mr. Nerling is in his tenth year of teaching in the Vancouver School Board where he is Director of Choral Activities and the Fine Arts Department Head. He also serves on the executive of the Vancouver Secondary Music Teachers Association, continues his own professional development through the BC Choral Mentorship Project, and proudly sings with the Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. When not immersed in everything music, he can be found cooking for friends and family, traveling with his wife, and digging in the garden.

Known internationally and loved locally, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is recognized as one of the vanguard male vocal ensembles in North America. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty years. Chor Leoni performs in many languages and styles and genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain.

The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In July 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 5�st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including �st place trophies in the �9th and �0th Century categories, two Audience Favourite awards, and 2nd place in the competition’s overall Grand Prix.

Chor Leoni prides itself on its musical ambassadorship for Vancouver and Canada and has performed at major music festivals and concert venues across Canada and the United States. Internationally, the choir has shared its music in Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

Chor Leoni has been a champion of new music and has commissioned hundreds of pieces for male choir, ranging from pop and folksong arrangements to modern works. The ensemble has commissioned works by notable composers such as Robert Sund, Stephen Chatman, Bruce Sled, Malcolm Forsyth, Jocelyn Morlock, R. Murray Schafer, Bob Chilcott, Stephen Smith, and Peter Togni, among others.

Believing in the transformative power of male singing, Chor Leoni annually engages young male singers in two successful education programs. PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites some of the most talented male singers from the Lower Mainland to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances and MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) provides an opportunity for teenage boys to come together in all-male choirs to find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture.

Chor Leoni was founded in �99� by Diane Loomer C.M. and is currently conducted by Erick Lichte.

Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life of North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.”

As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the

Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the �009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America.

As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as conductor for many professional, educational, and amateur choral ensembles. In January of 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir based in Vancouver, BC. Lichte is an active clinician and guest conductor, and is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing. Lichte is a published composer and arranger, especially known for his writing in All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on six North American tours and this year was presented at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

British Columbia Boys ChoirFounded in �96� by Donald Forbes, the British Columbia Boys Choir celebrates its 46th Season this year. The Choir has won international acclaim throughout Canada, the Netherlands, the United States, Europe, the Czech Republic, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, Costa Rica and Asia. The British Columbia Boys Choir is a four-part secular boys choir, one of the few in North America. Over its 45 year history the Choir has trained over 900 members who have represented Canada on �0 international tours, performing a demanding repertoire spanning centuries, from Gregorian chant to contemporary works. Programmes frequently include sacred and secular works, selections from musicals and opera, folk songs from around the world, and an assortment of Canadian works, many specifically composed for the Choir. The International Touring Choir performs today as one of three Choirs in organization. Singers range in age from 7–�4 and reside in Greater Vancouver and Central Vancouver Island region. In addition to frequent radio and television appearances, the Choir has made over �0 recordings and currently has three CDs on the market, Home, Spirit and If My Voice Had Wings. In May �0�4, a book about the Choir was released entitled A Song to Remember by Reikos Publishing and in July �0�4, the Choir toured across Canada, singing �� concerts in �0 provinces, including performing on Canada Day on Parliament Hill.www.bcboyschoir.org

Tony Araujo, Artistic Director and ConductorCelebrated for his spirited and moving concerts, Tony Araujo’s commitment to choral music is recognized in his innovative programming, teaching initiatives, conducting appearances, and award-winning ensembles that have performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He is Artistic Director of the British Columbia Boys Choir, Corpus Christi College Chamber Choir and Director of Choral Activities at St. Patrick Regional Secondary. Dr. Araujo has conducted choirs at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Davies Symphony Hall, Canterbury Cathedral and Carnegie Hall. He is in demand as clinician and adjudicator and has been invited to guest conduct provincial and all state select choirs. Dr. Araujo has spent the past ten

years applying new theories and practices of Depth Psychology to cultural transformation and healing, committed to an archetypal pedagogy that teaches to the soul and a choral music experience that bridges diversity, creates community and enables individuation.

Dr. Araujo is the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for teaching Excellence and inducted by the University of British Columbia as a lifetime member of the Golden Key International Honor Society for scholastic achievement, leadership and community service. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Choral Music Education and Canada’s Arts and Culture.

Edette Gagné, Associate ConductorEdette Gagné has built a reputation for excellence in musical performance in her work. Presently, the Canadian West Coast is her home, where she is the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Associate Conductor of the British Columbia Boys Choir International Touring choir, the Conductor of the BCBC Town Choir and a private voice instructor. Her passion for music is fuelled by intense musicianship and attention to detail, and Ms. Gagné’s performances reflect both careful adherence to performance practice and the high standards she sets for both herself and her ensembles. Her conducting experiences have now circumnavigated the globe, with shows conducted across Canada, in Sydney (Australia),

Pleven (Bulgaria), Kiev (Ukraine), Los Angeles and New York City. She is in great demand as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and vocal coach. A strong proponent of new and rarely performed works, Ms. Gagné has conducted several World, North American and Canadian premières. Ms. Gagné holds a Master of Music degree in conducting from the University of Calgary, Bachelor degrees in arts and education from the University of Alberta, as well as Associate Performance Diplomas in piano and voice from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.

Illumni Men’s Chorale is one of Seattle’s newest men’s choral ensembles. Their goal is to expand the audience for classical choral music, by making their concerts approachable and engaging. Founded in November 2009 and now in the middle of their fifth anniversary season, Illumni can be best described as a bunch of guys who just like to sing. The ensemble is made up of both professional musicians and choral hobbyists, and includes firefighters and computer programmers amongst its ranks. Ages range from �9 to �9, and the group is open to all who wish to audition.

With sopranisti and bassi profundi encompassing the extremes of the male voice, Illumni has a vocal range wider than most SATB choirs. This has allowed the group to explore a wide range of styles and genres and also to invent some new ones, such as ‘Pop-ssical.’ This fusion of pop and classical music received national attention when Illumni appeared on the NBC TV show America’s Got Talent in �0��.

The group has premiered over forty new works by local composers and well-known writers, including John Muehleisen, Hollywood film composer Edwin Wendler, and Bernard Hughes. Since 2012 Illumni has annually commissioned a new carol in which their Christmas concert audiences can participate; in �0�4 that carol was “Hark! What Mean Those Holy Voices” by Canadian composer Andrew Hawryluk.

Illumni’s dedication to their community is an important part of the group’s life. Every year their “Christmas Should Be Free” campaign ensures that all members of their community have access to their concerts, by challenging the community to fund them in advance. To date, thousands of free tickets have been given out to military families, families in need, school groups, retirement centres, non-profits, injured veterans and their families. In 2012, their local National Guard Units recognized Illumni for these efforts. This was one of their proudest moments.

This spirit of collaboration extends beyond working with composers and the community to the concert stage. Illumni has appeared in concert with Ancora, Canonici, the Harvard Glee Club, Jet Cities Chorus, the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus, and the LiveWire Quartet (a top-ten International Sweet Adelines Barbershop champion). The group has recorded several CDs, including Christmas for All (�0��) and most recently Music of Russia (2014). The latter highlights the choir’s oktavists, very low basses who take the usual bass line down an octave. This is a characteristic feature of Russian choral music, and the disc includes many pieces not normally heard outside of Russia. “Illumni truly captures the Russian spirit in a way few Western choirs have.” (oktavism.com) llumni can also be heard on film soundtracks, notably the cult classic The Gamers and JourneyQuest, along with the concert productions of The Matrix Live and Video Games Live.

Christopher J McCafferty is the founder and Artistic Director of Illumni Men’s Chorale and a well-known Seattle-area tenor soloist and vocal coach. Chris attended Pacific Lutheran University, where he studied voice with Marcia Baldwin and conducting with Dr. Richard Sparks. As a soloist he has appeared in the U.S., Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Austria, and Mexico. In �000, Chris premiered the tenor solo in Alice Parker’s An American Kedusha, and in �00� he gave the European premier of the tenor solo in Richard Nance’s Mass for a New Millenium.

As a professional chorister Chris has appeared at ACDA local and national conventions, on the Seattle Symphony Pops with Marvin Hamlisch, and with such travelling tours as Video Games Live and Star Wars in Concert. He has performed locally with the Seattle Opera, the Tudor Choir, Seattle Pro Musica, the Northwest Chamber Chorus, the Seattle Choral Company, the Seattle Symphony, Illumni Men’s Chorale, and Choral Arts.

Chris is in high demand as a vocal coach, particularly with men’s voices. He has been a staff tenor vocal coach for the Seattle Men’s Chorus (the world’s largest men’s chorus), was the resident tenor soloist and men’s vocal coach for the Seattle Choral Company for six years, and was the vocal coach, then interim director for the Seattle Sea Chordsmen. He maintains studios in Seattle’s Eastlake neighbourhood, and in Spanaway, WA. His students range in age from 13 up to their late 60’s and represent a wide range of skill levels, from beginners to long time singers and professional musicians. Nearly every year since he started teaching, Mr. McCafferty’s high school students have been able to attend the WMEA WA State Solo and Ensemble Contests by winning their districts.

Chris believes that everyone can sing, and interested singers at all levels should be encouraged to enjoy and expand their talent. More about Chris may be found at www.chrismccafferty.com.

Micah Bisson is Illumni’s resident accompanist, and will be joining Chris on the podium for most of this season. Micah is a native of the Seattle area and took to music at a very young age. He was an organist for church services as early as age �0.

Micah entered the U.S. Army Band program as a pianist, studying at the Armed Forces School of Music. After military service he returned to Denver, CO, where he participated with the Rocky Mountain Arts Association as a singer, section leader and assistant accompanist. It was there he was introduced to theatre organ music, which has become a life-long passion.

Micah enjoys playing all sorts of music, including ragtime, classical, show tunes, and accompanying a variety of soloists. He studied with Donna Parker, Lew Williams, and Dick Kroeckel. Micah is currently a member of the American Theatre Organ Society, the American Guild of Organists.

Frances Roberts has spent the past twenty-three years teaching secondary choral music at Argyle Secondary, North Vancouver where she directs four concert choirs and two vocal jazz/ chamber ensembles. She is on faculty at the West Coast Amateur Musicians Family Summer Camp and at the Naramata Centre - Music Week for the United Church of Canada. She is also the director for Genesis II Youth Choir at Highlands United Church. In �0�� she was honoured to be the director of the BC Youth Choir for BCCF Chorfest in Nanaimo.

Over the years her senior choirs have toured extensively, within North America, Europe, China, U.K. and the Baltics. Her choirs have been fortunate enough to be selected to appear with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Chamber Choir and workshop with Eric Whitacre, Bob Chilcott, Robert Sund, Rajaton (from Finland), The Idea of North (from Australia) and the Swingle Singers (from the United Kingdom). She is currently completing her Masters in Choral Conducting at UBC with Dr. Graeme Langager and is thrilled to be directing the UBC Men’s Choir.

The UBC Men’s Choir is the newest choral ensemble in the UBC School of Music. In just its second year, the choir has doubled in size, growing from 20 to nearly 40 singers. The UBC Men’s Choir is comprised of students from across all faculties at UBC, including both music and non-music majors. The UBC choral program is a large and vibrant organization of 5 choirs and approximately 330 singers. Under the direction of Dr. Graeme Langager, the UBC choral program has grown to be one of the leading choral departments in all of Canada. The Men’s Choir performs in three concerts over the school year at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and the Barnett Recital Hall. This is their first festival and they are honoured to be representing UBC as invited participants at the first VanMan event.

Willi Zwozdesky Now in his thirty-fourth season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus, Willi Zwozdesky is widely-known for his work as a conductor, arranger, publisher, and producer. A native of north-central Alberta, Zwozdesky later moved to Seattle, where he completed a Master of Music in choral conducting and a Master of Arts in music theory at the University of Washington in �9��. Following his move to Vancouver in that year, he established himself as a leader in the city’s cultural community, and undertook the development of the voice of the VMC. Under his direction, the Chorus has distinguished itself through innovative, often collaborative programming that emphasizes the work of Canadian creators, custom

arrangements for men’s voices, a wide range of women’s music, and extra-choral elements such as spoken word, movement, and dance. At the core of Zwozdesky’s career are his arrangements, many of which are heard regularly in concert programs and recordings around the world. His choral music has been performed by leading choirs in North America, Europe, and Australia. His most recent commission is a suite of five carols for children’s choir and orchestra, recently premiered in Ottawa by the Ottawa Children’s Choir and Ottawa Junior Youth Orchestra. Zwozdesky’s long-term dedication to choral music has been recognized internationally and regionally with a Legacy Award from GALA Choruses and a Willan Award from the British Columbia Choral Federation. An active choral clinician and consultant, Willi has also volunteered on a number of national and regional organizations, including the Canadian Music Centre, GALA Choruses, Inc., and the World of Children’s Choirs. Today, in addition to his freelance work, he serves as the Executive Director of the British Columbia Choral Federation and as a board member of Choral Canada – the Association of Canadian Choral Communities.

Vancouver Men’s Chorus Composed of gay men and their friends, the chorus promotes community spirit and a positive image of the gay community. The Vancouver Men’s Chorus is one of Canada’s premier singing ensembles and Canada’s first gay chorus. For more than 30 years, we’ve delighted audiences locally and abroad. At the core of the Chorus’ achievements stands its contribution to the creation of new repertoire for men’s and mixed voices. Custom-made arrangements, notably by Willi Zwozdesky, Stephen Smith, and other Canadian arrangers are a hallmark of VMC programming. As a result of this and the Chorus’ wide-ranging concertizing, VMC arrangements are now heard in concert halls around the world. Original commissions have included Vancouver composers Michael Conway Baker, Ramona Luengen, Anita Perry, Rupert Lang, Stephen Smith, and Willi Zwozdesky, and Toronto composer Eleanor Daley. In �000, the Chorus was also among the original commissioning choruses of Alan Shorter’s setting of the children’s story Oliver Button Is a Sissy. The Chorus is a member of the British Columbia Choral Federation and of GALA Choruses.
