VANITY LICENSE PLATE ‘SMUGGLER’ CAUGHT FEDSATTENTION

20 year old Jasmin Klair wanted to be a drug-runner, now says she knew better than to get into avehicle that had a personalized license plate with the letters SMUGGLER on it. And that she shouldhave thought twice before booking a room at the Smuggler's Inn, a mere sprint from the Canadianborder.

According to court documents (linked below) Homeland Security agents received a tip in mid-December about a cocaine deal at a Pizza Hut in Bellingham, Washington. They set up surveillanceat the Pizza Hut and watched as a GMC Yukon with a driver and two passengers pulled in. Agentsfollowed the SUV to the “Smuggler’s Inn," pulled it over and found, in a large white box, ninebricks of cocaine weighing just less than 24 pounds.

Federal records detail how Jasmin Klair admitted that the illicit cargo was hers and agreed tocooperate with law enforcement officials. She explained to agents that she had been told to book abottom-floor room facing Canada at the Smuggler’s Inn, a bed and breakfast with rooms named "AlCapone" and "DB Cooper." Klair wanted the "Captain's Room," about 150 feet from the border.

“She appeared nervous and agitated when I asked her about her identity,” special agent JoshuaBarnett wrote in the criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. While agents interviewed her,she started receiving text messages from two men, Gurjit Singh Sandhu, 24 and Narinder Kaler, 25,who had given her the job. Authorities prevailed on her to contact the two men and have them cometo the Smuggler’s Inn. They arrived within minutes and made a run for it when police ordered themto stop.

Klair told agents she had only met Sandhu two weeks earlier through a friend at work. She told her2 new friends that she would transport a package across the border in exchange for $4,000. Sheadmitted picking up the cocaine in the parking lot of a Jack in the Box in Burlington before callingSandhu, who is also the owner of the Smuggler’s Inn, to pick her and her illicit cargo up.

Narender Kaler, allegedly told agents that he would have received $2,000 for the deal. He said reallyneeded it, to pay off a $325,000 debt for losing 115 pounds of marijuana a year and a half ago. Klair,20, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to conspiring to distribute cocaine. She will be sentencedon May 29. Kaler and Gurjit Sandhu are in jail and face similar charges.

Sandhu is also the owner of the Yukon SUV with the SMUGLER vanity plates. He takes the recentevents in stride. Last year, 57 people were arrested going through his property. “It’s part of life onthe border, the officers go through on the hour every hour. There are sensors in the yard. We’re oncamera where we live.”

PRINTED BALLOTS WERE TOO WIDE FOR SCANNERS IN SOME ILLINOIS PRECINCTS

Some of the printed ballots in 25 of 110 Illinois jurisdictionswere slightly too wide to fit into the optical scanners and willhave to be trimmed or hand counted, officials said Tuesdayafternoon.

1. Voters are choosing a Republican presidential nominee andmaking decisions in Congressional primaries. Turnout appearedto be light, officials said. But the ballot problem threatened toslow the results from some parts of the state Tuesday night.

Officials quickly began noticing on Tuesday that some of theballots filled out by voters did not fit into the scanner — theywere too wide, according to Ken Menzel, the deputy generalcounsel for the Illinois elections board.

Mr. Menzel said it was unclear how many ballots were affected.At precincts in the affected counties, some ballots seemed to fit,and some did not, he said. He said it appeared that the ballotswere cut unevenly by the vendors who had printed them.

“Anything that goes wrong on election day is a Maaloxmoment,” Mr. Menzel said.

But he said that no votes had been lost and that all of the voteswould be counted — eventually.

Election officials said the precinct leaders would try to trim thetoo-wide ballots to get them to fit through the scanner. If thatdoesn’t work, a ballot can be “remade” under Illinois rules. Inthat case, a new ballot is filled out as a duplicate of thedamaged one under bipartisan supervision at the precinct.

“All of the votes that were cast by the voters we’ll be able totabulate,” Mr. Menzel said. “We will be able to counteverything.”

Most of the state’s precincts — including the ones in CookCounty, where Chicago is — did not experience the ballotproblem, Mr. Menzel said. When the problem was discovered,officials in some of the affected precincts offered voters theoption to vote by touch screen, which submits voteselectronically rather than printing them on paper.

Mr. Menzel said he did not know whether the ballots weretested before Tuesday.

“I don’t know; I’m not intimately familiar with the ins and outs”of printing ballots, he said. “One would think there would be adegree of quality control.”
