RespectWorks Tools for these Times

Hi Everyone,

I sincerely hope that you are all doing well.

I thought to share a great collection of resources I came across this week that folks may find helpful:

Crisis and Trauma Resource Institute of Canada’s Free COVID-19 Resources

A comprehensive list of free webinars, audio exercises, worksheets, and concise blog posts on a range of topics for coping through

these times including strategies for working from home, managing anxiety, and supporting loved ones.

While holding space to acknowledge all the different ways in which we are experiencing these circumstances, here are a couple of articles that

discuss the importance and benefits of cultivating empathy in our communication with each other:

4 Ways to Practice Trauma-Informed Healing

Suggestions on how to support mutual healing in our communication that include shifting judgement to curiosity, taking time to

reflect and breathe before responding, creating a safe enough space, and seeking out connection

Cultivating Empathy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

A discussion of the ways in which we can cultivate empathy for others and compassion for the self with the understanding that we

are each working with different internal and external resources.

You can visit the Respect-Works website anytime for additional resources, reflections, and tools. Please don’t hesitate to email me for

information, referrals, or regarding concerns for which I can be of assistance; I primarily respond to emails during the week and am available

to schedule verbal consultations around when would best suit our respective availabilities in these circumstances.

A sincere thank you to everyone for ALL that you are doing! Sending lots of virtual care through this time.

What to do if you must adjust an announcement on the Events Calendar In case you have an event or announcement on the Vanier College website listed under: https://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/events-calendar

and would need to adjust the information on your post due to cancellation or postponement of the event/announcement or for any other

reason, please contact Zsofia Orszagh in Vanier Communications if you have any issues as that section of the site is only accessible from the

College to update information.

She can be reached at [email protected]

Vanier College Social Media Accounts

If you are considering starting a social media account for a Vanier program, department or project, and are not sure what to do, then read

on. Take a look at our guidelines for Facebook & Twitter. We will be preparing more guidelines soon.

Contact Vanier Communications and ask us any questions you might have. Your main contact in the department keeping track of the Vanier

accounts is Zsofia Orszagh. You may reach her via email at [email protected]

The College needs to know about the existence of any account linked to Vanier or using the Vanier name, so Vanier Communications asks for

access to Vanier Social Media Accounts. We do this so that important accounts don’t just disappear or become inaccessible because people

change jobs within Vanier, retire or leave for other opportunities. We had one case where the account holder passed away. So in order not to

lose the accounts, it is important to keep us informed and provide us (Zsofia Orszagh) with administrative rights. Once we have that, we will

also add your account under the list of Vanier Social Media accounts page on our website.

Thank you.

Zsofia Orszagh, Web Communications Officer, Communications and Corporate Affairs

Graduation Ceremony 2019-2020 The Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2019-2020 was originally scheduled to take place Monday June 22, 2020. Unfortunately, due to

the COVID-19 crisis the status of Vanier’s Graduation Ceremony is now unknown, until further notice.

However, we will continue the process of selecting a Valedictorian for the Class of 2019-2020. The Valedictorian is presented at Graduation

as being a representative of our graduates and addresses the audience on behalf of the graduating class.

Here are indicators of importance:

• Academically strong: approximately an 80% average,

• Positive about Vanier,

• Articulate,

• Comfortable speaking in public,

• Broad experience at Vanier

Nominations from faculty and staff are now being accepted by the Valedictorian Selection Committee. If you know of a suitable candidate,

please send their name (and ID number if possible), and a few lines about the nominee, to:

Valedictorian Selection Committee: [email protected]

Deadline Monday May 4, 2020

Suitable candidates will be asked to a selection interview. The Vanier Community will be advised of the outcome of the Selection Committee

deliberations.

Thank you for your assistance in choosing a Valedictorian for the Vanier College Class of 2019-2020.

2020 STUDENT LIFE AWARD

The Student Life Award distinguishes graduating students who, aside from academic achievement, deserve recognition for their commitment,

integrity and perseverance in contributing to Vanier’s student life. Excellence in leadership, effort, and the ability to motivate and involve

others are often the qualities exhibited by Student Life Award recipients.

Any student, faculty or staff member of Vanier College may nominate a candidate to the Student Life Award. Please print and complete the

nomination form found on the web at https://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/student-services/student-life/student-life-awards/

In light of COVID-19, please do not submit the form and the letter of recommendation to Student Services, C-203, instead email the form

and the letter of recommendation to Donata Parisella at [email protected]. The deadline to submit your nomination is May 12,

2020.

ARCH-TECH STUDENTS VOLUNTEER THEIR DESIGN SKILLS DURING THE PANDEMIC

Architectural Technology students are showing tremendous initiative during the pandemic, by volunteering their design skills to help essential

organizations in need of architectural consultation. Second-year students Alissa Muro, Tuan Anh Phan, Aleah Pompura, and Ellen Ung

proposed social distancing measures through architectural initiatives for Education Plus, an alternative school for at-risk youth.

Pictured is a Zoom session between Ellen, Aleah and myself, with James Watts and Kim Watts of Education Plus, discussing design initiatives.

All work was done remotely, of course. Students are also in talks with other organizations for similar initiatives.

ECE Weekly Tips Good morning, from the Early Childhood Education department! We hope that the past week went smoothly, and we wish you a wonderful

upcoming week!

This week, we are on a roll! We’ve all heard how the Great Hunt for Toilet Paper has been one of the challenges of the current situation, so

we thought we’d shine a different light on an under-appreciated household object. May we present: the toilet paper roll.

Our first craft idea comes to us from Nora Soukiassian- thanks Nora!

Click on the link to find easy-peasy instructions for transforming toilet paper rolls into a fun desk-top organizer for coloured pencils, markers

and other art supplies. Super cute!

https://www.easypeasyandfun.com/diy-bookworm-paper-roll-pencil-

holder/?fbclid=IwAR0xDDjwLwX5wBcw_kEyIm4v4sIB2YloPo6Ig42i93jxbdBq0s3S-nSleMY

Toilet paper rolls are so versatile! Besides being great for all kinds of crafts, they are also excellent props for pretend play! A toilet paper roll

can transform into:

- a microphone: children can pretend to be their favourite singer, a sports announcer or a reporter- they could even use their toilet paper

roll microphone and interview you about topics of interest!

- binoculars: children can attach a couple of rolls together with glue, tape or a stapler (they might need adult help with this), and then head

out for adventure- they can search for rare birds up in the branches, seek out interesting cloud formations, or whatever strikes their fancy!

- a spyglass: who doesn’t want to pretend to be a pirate, or an explorer! Taping 2 rolls end-to-end will help any budding Blackbeard or Kate

Rice set out into the wide blue yonder.

- a telescope: children can take on the role (get it? get it?) of a famous astronomer like Victoria Kaspi or Edwin Hubble and peer into the sky,

looking for planets, galaxies, black holes or other fascinating phenomenon.

And of course, children may have their own ideas about how they can use toilet paper rolls in their play- we know someone who, when he

was a boy, used to strap a couple of rolls to his back and pretend he was Jacques Cousteau leaving the Calypso to explore the ocean depths

with his scuba tanks!

Page 9: Vanier in the News · 2020-05-01 · Thank you for your assistance in choosing a Valedictorian for the Vanier College Class of 2019-2020. ... ECE Weekly Tips Good morning, ... Click

Toilet paper rolls can also help you get moving! Here are some simple movement game ideas, using the humble TP roll as a prop:

1) Obstacle Course: save up your rolls and then use them to create an obstacle course in an open area. This could be a solo event, a race or even a relay! Children could be challenged to weave in and out between the rolls as fast as they can on foot, on their knees, or even by hopping, using a tote bag, like the classic Potato Sack Race!

2) Reel It In: Attach one end of a long string to your roll and the other end to a box. Place an interesting object into the box- maybe a stuffed animal or a shoe. Then, rotate the roll as fast as you can and reel in the box! Again, this could be a solo challenge, or a head-to-head race.

3) The Biggest Wave: This game is guaranteed to bring out the competitive spirit. You need a bunch of toilet paper rolls (if you cut them in half, you’ll have twice as many, and the game might be easier for younger children), 2 players and a pair of fans. If you don’t have fans, fly swatters or floppy hats work just as well. The 2 players sit on either side of an agreed- upon “pitch”, behind their line. The toilet paper rolls are dumped in the middle. When they hear the word “GO!”, both players try to wave their fans as hard as they can, to drive all of the toilet paper rolls across the other person’s line. The game ends when there are no more toilet rolls on the pitch, or everyone’s arms are tired! Check out this video on YouTube to see these and other great games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtKtUKbrnkw

So there you go- we hope we have helped you to see all the potential in the lowly toilet paper roll! As a parting gift, here are two toilet paper-related children’s books your family might enjoy:

For preschoolers: and for older children (9+): As always, we’d love to hear from you – if you’ve got any great family-friendly tips, suggestions, recipes etc… you want to share with the Vanier community, send us an email at [email protected] And for daily ideas, links and information, follow us on Twitter @vanierece Stay safe and stay healthy everyone!

Art and Photography Scholarships For a third consecutive year Vanier College is offering two scholarships to support our students that have talent in the creative arts. The Vanier

College Foundation Student Art Acquisition Scholarship, valued at $2000 is divided amongst the selected applicants to purchase and display

their artwork on Vanier's campus. The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography, valued at $600 and is divided into first, second

and third prizes. All finalists from both scholarships will be included in an exhibition in the Henry Lehmann Gallery (B-303) at the beginning of

the fall semester 2020.

The application deadline for both scholarships is Wednesday May 13th, 2020.

See more detail below on each scholarship.

The Vanier College Foundation Student Art Acquisition Scholarship.

The goal of the scholarship is to promote student success and highlight student artwork by purchasing it and displaying it in various areas of

the college. At the same time, this scholarship would offer financial support to students and lead to the creation of an art bank that would help

showcase the talents of our students in disciplines such as photography, sculpture, drawing and painting.

All media are accepted: drawings, paintings, photography, art work, installation art and sculpture.

The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography

The Peter Gonda Memorial Scholarship for Photography, valued at $600, will be awarded annually to any Vanier College student who

demonstrates original photographic works. There will be a first prize of $300, second prize of $200 and a third prize of $100.

Peter Gonda passed away on August 20th 2016 at the age of 47. He was a Montreal-based artist, novelist and screenwriter. One of his main

passions was photography. He travelled around the world and exhibited his photographs in London, Paris and Montreal.

To meet current needs as efficiently as possible, college education institutions wish to offer students multiple possibilities and formats for

taking their courses, be they face-to-face or distance. In this context, thanks to its greater flexibility, blended learning is an outstanding option,

enabling each learner to balance the various aspects associated with studies, work and family life. The purpose of this private online course is

to introduce college teaching staff to this type of learning.

*Visit the SPOC's website or see the attached SPOC flyer for details. (Please note that the May 2020 course will in fact run in June.)

MTP

The Fall 2020 course schedule for Performa’s for-credit Master Teacher Program (MTP) is now available. All courses are scheduled

to run in a blended learning format, but Performa is prepared to offer the courses in online format if need be. Courses and host
