Why Mission, Vision, Values?
Our college is defined by our mission, vision and core values. These
critical elements describe who we are, what we want to achieve, and what
will guide our decision-making on a daily basis.
• The mission identifies our purpose;
• The vision sets out the ideal state that we want to achieve; and
• The core values articulate our most fundamental beliefs and the
behaviours expected of employees and students.
Combined, our mission, vision and values set the context for the
development of the Strategic Plan for 2013-2018 and for the long-term development of the College.
Mission, Vision and Values Statements
Answer the Following Questions… Mission
o What are we?
o Who do we serve?
o What needs do we fulfill?
o What makes us unique?
Vision
o What will we be five years from now?
o What is our ideal state/preferred future?
o What will we have accomplished?
Values
o What do we stand for?
o What values will guide our everyday actions?

Vision
2020 Strategic priorities,
goals and initiatives focus our
activities to
advance our Vision
Our mission and values guide
our everyday actions but
our vision gives shape and direction to our future.
A vision without a plan
is just a dream.
A plan without a vision
is just drudgery.
But a vision with a plan can
change the world.
– Old Proverb
A Great Vision...
...transforms an organization
...provides a picture of what could be
...is a catalyst for change
...is a BHAG (BIG Hairy Audacious Goal)
...aligns people in activities that cut across the college
...facilitates goals and planning
...helps team members set priorities
...defines what we will do as well as what we will NOT do
...says, “This is what we stand for!”
...reflects our core values and uniqueness
What is Our Vision for the Future ?
The Context for Our Vision
The Environmental Scan:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
In order to determine where we want - and need - to be (vision),
and how to get there (priorities, goals, objectives & initiatives),
we must understand where we are now.
Strengths?
Challenges?
Opportunities?
Weaknesses?
The Context for Our Vision: Questions We Must Answer
Discussion session
What does a successful student look like?
How might this snapshot of a successful
student change by 2020?
What internal conditions are needed
for our students to be successful?
The action of
creating a vision
forces us
to take a stand
for a preferred future.
Creating a Shared Vision of Vanier
For the next couple of minutes just sit quietly. Don’t write anything, just relax.
.............................
Imagine the future in 2020.
Imagine Vanier has become everything you have hoped for.
Creating a Shared Vision…
Jot down what you see (present tense) in
a few sentences or bullet points...
Creating a Shared Vision…
Now imagine the Gazette is interviewing you five years from now. The reporter is interviewing you on why Vanier is the provincial (or even national!) leader in student development and success.
What would you show/tell the reporter as examples of Vanier’s excellence that you are particularly proud of?
Jot down the images of Vanier excellence that came to your mind (present tense).
Creating a Shared Vision…
Break into groups of three and briefly share your
visions of Vanier.
Pick three shared /agreed upon themes from your
visions to put forward to the whole group and
write them in large block letters on a post-it note
(present tense).
Creating a Shared Vision…
Returning to the larger group, we will retrieve one post-it from the first group, then one from the second group, etc. and go around until all ideas are shared.
Through this process, we will be grouping ideas into categories and identifying patterns. This will create a rough draft for a shared vision of Vanier.
