lenna’s letterOur children are back in school after a lovely

summer… and because time flies, we’re

already gearing up for the holidays! But first,

let’s recap a few highlights of summer and fall.

Summer is our most intense fund-raising time of

year and 2007 was an especially busy one! Many thanks

to the Heatwave Golf Committee, led by Edward DeWees,

III and Mark Meador. These board members, both of

whom have small children at home, work diligently to

raise money! This year, the golf tournament raised over

$60,000. I attended the dinner the night before, and I

encourage you to put this on your calendar for next year.

Not only do you get great food, but it’s an entertaining

evening to remember.

Our Wildest Auction turned out to be one of the “hottest”

on record — the air conditioning went out at the Alzafar

Shrine! Many thanks to our guests for “sweating” it out with

us while we struggled to get it fixed. I am truly amazed at

the generosity of our guests. Special thanks go out to

Manny and Debbie Ruiz and our Auction committee for

their hard work. Boysville raised a record amount for the

children who live on our campus. We were honored to

have our Days of Care presented by a who’s who of San

Antonio’s popular KSAT-TV news reporters: Steve

Spriester, Leslie Mouton and Steve Brown. A Day

of Care helps feed, clothe and provide medical and

therapeutic assistance to our children. Of course, we

could not achieve such huge success at the Wildest

Auction without the help of KENS-TV’s Bill Taylor, our

wonderful Master of Ceremonies and Dan Kruse, our

auctioneer, both of whom donated their time to this event.

Very soon, Christmas will be upon us and I call on the

generosity of the San Antonio community to help fulfill the

Christmas wishes and dreams of our children. Each year,

we find that more children must remain on campus during

the holidays; this year, we anticipate that 85% of our

children will be with us. Keeping this in mind, we ask

that you remember the children of Boysville — in gifts,

in volunteering and in caring.

Thanks to your support, Boysville is able to continue its

mission of providing a safe environment for children in need

so that we may help them become responsible adults.

The Boysville Board of Directors is honored to name Judge Peter

Sakai as the 2008 Arthur O’Krent Humanitarian Award recipient.

Sakai, an impassioned advocate for children, is a respected jurist who

worked on behalf of children in family court for 11 years, presiding over

many high profile child abuse cases. He was elected to the 225th

District Court in 2006 and continues to work with families in crisis.

“It has been our privilege to know Judge Sakai for many years,” said

Lenna Baxter, CEO for Boysville. “He deeply cares about children and truly

exemplifies this award with his love and concern for South Texas children.”

Judge Sakai is widely regarded in the community as a leader who has

devoted his energies to bringing new ideas and solutions to help resolve

issues of child abuse, neglect and family violence. He has consistently

challenged those involved in the child welfare system to more effectively

serve the families that come through the courts.

The Arthur O’Krent Award is given to an individual who, by civic action,

demonstrates love and concern for the well being of children within our

community. He joins a distinguished group of past recipients that includes Fully

Clingman, Tom Frost, Governor Dolph Briscoe, Dr. Dale Wood, Edith McAllister,

Reverend Buckner Fanning, Rosemary Kowalski and Bill Greehey.

wildest auction ‘07Boysville’s 41st Annual Wildest Auction in the West

turned into the “Hottest Auction in the West,” as our brave

and hearty guests remained at the Alzafar Shrine despite

a broken air conditioner. For the 4th year in a row, the

auction raised a record amount — $420,000 for the children

of Boysville. With help from the Spurs Coyote;

Bill Taylor, KENS-5 favorite weather prognosticator;

Dan Kruse; and live entertainment from Lil’ Bit and the

Customatics, guests enjoyed great food, music and one

of the liveliest auctions ever seen in San Antonio.4

campus newstrick or treat!O! It was a scary, spooky and fun-filled Halloween for the

children of Boysville:

• The fun began with the Annual Harvest Party hosted by Sigma Sigma Sigma

Sorority at St. Mary’s university and Sigma Phi Epsilon

Fraternity at uTSA. The children enjoyed hayrides,

pumpkin carving, decorating mini-pumpkins, frosting

cookies and competing in a fun, messy pumpkin-

carving contest.

• Many thanks to Ernesto Malacara of the Menger for

hosting a “haunted” party at the historic hotel.

• uTSA hosted an evening of tricks ‘n’ treats at Chisholm

Hall for our younger children. Our ghouls and goblins

slithered from room to room in search of many treats!

campus news boysvilletoday

those lazy crazy days of summer

super summer ‘07 Boysville had a super summer! Our children participated

in several camps and attended many fun events —

fending off the summertime blues and building summer-

time memories. Here are some highlights, along with

our heartfelt thanks to the generous folks who made all

this possible:

• Future basketball stars Devonte, Gordon, Marcos,

Mashelle and Ashton developed their basketball skills

at the George Gervin Basketball Camp, thanks to the

generous sponsorship of Time Warner Cable.

• The San Antonio Chapter of CPAs sponsored all of our

children under the age of 12, enabling them to attend the

Funlympics at St. Peter – St. Joseph Children’s Home.

Over 45 of our younger children had a great time tossing

Frisbees, footballs and beanbags through hoops, rings

and holes, playing tug of war, competing in races and

doing what kids do best — playing! They were treated to

a filling lunch and outfitted with school supplies.

• Take me out to the Ball Park! The Harmony Hills

Optimists treated the entire campus to a night at

the Missions! A big THANK yOu to Ed Sebera and

the Optimists.

• The Delta zeta Sorority from St. Mary’s university

hosted a game day in our gym. Children played Chutes

and Ladders, Monopoly, Spades, Dominoes, 24,

Go Fish and Candy Land. The Dz women also

brought paints and their creative touch and painted our

children’s faces.

• The Rotary Club of San Antonio at the Dominion invited

the entire campus to Enchanted Springs Ranch for

their Annual Wild West Day. Gunfights, gun twirlers,

jousting and civil war reenactments were just part of

the festivities. It was all topped off by a delicious brisket

and sausage lunch. Many thanks to Sam Gott and his

fellow Rotarians.

community newsdays of caring

volunteer cornerTHE BEST GIFT yOu’LL GIVE THIS yEAR!

Boysville needs you to help make our children’s holidays

warm and meaningful. For most children, the holidays are

a joyous time…but for our children this can be a sad time

of year when many are homesick and long to be with

their families.

If you can find it in your heart and your schedule to spend

time with our children, it may be the best holiday present

you give this year. Here are several opportunities to help

bring cheer to our children:

• Help decorate the gym for Christmas festivities.

• Wrap presents for the children.

• Escort one or two kids during the E.K. Melton Shopping

trip at North Star Mall on December 11th or during the

KISS Kids Shopping Trip on December 8th.

• Help serve Christmas dinner on December 21st.

• Plan an activity for the children during the Christmas

break (December 26th through January 4th).

For more information, contact Andrea Carranco at

[email protected] or (210) 659-1901.

Boysville would like to thank The Greehey Family

Foundation for sending our children back to school

in brand new shoes!

Thank you also to Valero Energy Corporation for

helping our Foster Care Program!

The united Way Campaign is underway and Boysville

welcomed Federal Express to our campus to do some

much needed mulching around our playgrounds. The

Fed-Ex employees spread mulch, did a little yard work

and when asked, helped remove grass from the larger

playground in the middle of campus. Boysville ran out of

mulch, but the Fed-Ex employees offered to come back

and finish the job!

Over 200 hours volunteer hours were donated to

Boysville on that day!
