NOSFERATU

Nosferatu is a 1922 German vampire film, it is said this film set the tone for low key lighting and figures/things in the shadows for vampire films we see today. The films is a silent movies so music and lighting is used to tell the story and show emotions. Lighting is especially important in this film because the lighting becomes the only means of highlighting or blending in features that the producer deems more or less important. The use of shadows are used a lot throughout this film, it is used to add a sense of danger/ the unknown.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT

30 days of night is a 2007 horror/thriller about a town that get has a 30 day period of polar light for the winter, therefore the entire film is set in the low key lighting however some moments are darker than others usually around the time something dark/sinister is going to or has happened. Like Nosferatu the idea of ‘living in the shadows’ is used. The only light throughout the film is by torch or candles.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN

Let the right one in is a 2008 Swedish film, like most typical modern day vampire movies it uses the idea that horror elements happen at night this is because typically the dark is seen to be scarier or vampires can’t go out in the light, in the day no major thriller like activities happen.

ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE

Only lovers left alive is a 2013 film. The film doesn’t particularly change its lighting throughout in fact most of it is filed without the main characters apartment however this is a dark place and the décor in it adds to this.

CONCLUSION

Overall I think typically lighting in vampire

movies is low key, it also uses lots of shadows

and dark décor.
