I would like to salute the staff at Como No and JungleDrums, whose ster-ling efforts have produced this outstand-ing guide. Likewise, I would encourage all Londoners to enjoy the cornucopia of Latin-themed events taking place in the capital this summer.

yours sincerely,

It is a real pleasure once again to offer words of support for ¡Vamos! - London’s Guide to the Latin Summer.

This year London welcomes the world to our remarkable city, as we host the greatest sporting spectacle in the form of the London 2012 olympic and Paralympic games. I’m sure that this fantastic event will dovetail with the huge number of Latin-related cultural events listed in the excellent ¡Vamos!.

I’m also delighted that London will be passing on the olympic Flame to the people of rio, who will be hosting the games in four years’ time. Mayor of London

EXpErT Tip

It’s a great pleasure to find Latin American pockets scattered around London now. Markets like Shepherds Bush and Brixton are great places to buy black beans, yam or Venezuelan harina pan to make some mean arepas for breakfast. Moo grill near Liverpool St has an authentic Argentinean Milanesa sandwich, or have a good Argie steak and drops of Malbec in Constancia near Tower Bridge.

Criolo

400,000 Brazilians can’t be wrong, or at least not the ones who downloaded this cracking debut release from the thinking man’s Seu Jorge. When Criolo sings the achingly beautiful Não Existe Amor Em SP (Love doesn’t exist in Sao Paulo) you don’t care you just want to be there. Catch him at Back 2 Black in London in June. Sterns (released June 25)

“This’ll be the album to launch Seu Jorge into the big time” writes the Guardian somewhat missing the point. This is in fact the coolest man on the planet’s bid to make the ultimate album to get the twisted fires started at a Brazilian barbecue. But whether it’s sirloin in Rio or Turkey Twiz-zlers in Fashionable SE22 his baritone is really cooking this time. Wrasse (out now)

Speaking of Colombia’s loping-rhythmed musical gift to the world, here is a timely reissue of a compila-tion from the vaults of Discos Fuentes from the seventies. Vacuum packed these tunes sound as fresh as the day they were first canned in Medellin. World Circuit (out now)

Welcome the new cumbia vision lovingly assembled in Colombia’s Abbey Road (Discos Fuentes) by Quantic, the thinking man’s Damon Albarn, and Mario Galeano. Big hitters from Colombia’s golden age face curved balls from the younger generation and every track is a home run. Catch Onda-trópica live in London at Hackney Empire on 20 July at and BT River of Music on 22 July. Soundway (released July 16)

Authentic and very popular restaurant in Hackney serving the best parrillada in town - four selections of meats, provolone cheese and mushroom served from a smoldering hot grill. Good Argentine wine list and wallet friendly prices.

Upmarket Brazilian emporio (delicatessen) and cafe in Parsons Green with an impres-sive range of top quality produce from Brazil including guarana, pao de queijo (small cheese breads served hot from the oven), artisan cachacas and feijoada served with a smile by the owner Carminha.

Also opening this summer we’re looking forward to trying Lima London, headed up by top Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez, chef patron of Central in Lima and Sushisamba which looks set to extend the culinary love shared between Brazil and Japan.

Long established Spanish-Colombian tapas in Clapham. Good range of dishes with some unusual choices like fried cas-sava served with chillies and guacamole, veal empanadas and a buzzing atmo-sphere attracting a vibrant local crowd.

Smart modern Mexican restaurant, run by Mexicans, with a slick tequila bar. A range of good specialities but their Sunday brunch with huevos rancheros, menudo, pozole and birria is the one to go to when you are hungry.
