The term is back in full swing! It's been lovely to see new and old faces popping into our offices. Welcome back! Class enrollment is still open so scroll to the bottom if you want more information on this. But first, here's the round-up on our next events; Find out more about our Book Club Book Club: Thursday, February 6th at 6 pm Book Club's around the corner, the first one of the year is on Thursday, February 6th. We're reading El Misterio de la Cripta Embrujada, a crime novel by Eduardo Mendoza. You can find a copy here! Book Club conversations are held in Spanish, but even if you haven't read or understood the entire book, you're still welcome to attend! The conversation can help guide your reading and improve your comprehension of the Spanish Language. Book club costs £10 to attend and includes a glass of wine. Tangoisoneoftheworld'smostbeautifuldances.It'schargedwithenergy,eleganceandpoise.Themusicthataccompaniesitispoetic,eccentricandnostalgic.TheTangohasbecomeaculturalemblemforArgentinaandUruguayandisdancedaroundtheworld.In2009,theUNESCOdeclaredtheTangotobepartoftheworld's'culturalheritage'andgranteditprotection.

Tango'soriginsarenotglitzy.MostreckonthatTangowasbornintheslumsofBuenosAiresattheturnofthe20thcentury.Atthetime,Argentinawasbooming;BuenosAireswasafinancialcentreandatradinghub.Outsidethecity,thefrontieragriculturallandsofthePampaswerebeingrapidlydevelopeddrawinginmigrantsfromallovertheworld.Butthecountry'swealthdistributionwasalsostaggeringlyunequal,andmigrantsandlocalsalikeoftenendedupinthesprawlingslumswhichenvelopedaroundthePortofBuenosAiresontheRiverPlata.

Mostresidentsoftheslumswereemployedinthemeatpackingindustry.NewrailroadsbroughtcattlefromthePampastotheportareawhereitwasslaughtered,packedandshippedaroundtheworld.MuchofthisindustrywasrunbyBritishfirmsandfinancialinterests.IfyoustrollthroughBuenosAires,onewillstillbeunexpectedlystruckbypeculiarremnantsofBritishinfluenceneartheport;Avillageclockhere,atrainstationthere.

TheslumsofBuenosAiresbecameameltingpotofpeoplesandcultures.MostmigrantscamefromItaly,SpainandGermany.Theybroughtwiththemthingslikeviolins,cellos,pianos,and,oneimagines,adeepsenseofnostalgiafortheirprevioushomelands.ThesemigrantsmixedwithArgentineblacksandGauchos(ArgentineCowboys)whobroughtamixofAfricanrhythms,adancecalledthecandombeandjauntymusicknownas'themilonga'tothetable.Atsomepoint,someonethrewaBandoneonintothemixforgoodmeasure.Fromthechaos,Tangowasborn.

Forawhile,TangoonlyexistedintheslumsofBuenosAires.It'swidelyassertedthatmostofthedance'searlydevelopmenttookplaceinbarsandbrothels.ThedancewaslargelyignoredbyrichArgentinesuntilthe1920'swhen,quiteunexpectedly,TheTangomadeitbacktoEuropewhereitbecamearaginghit.Intheend,itwasParis,notBuenosAires,thatpopularisedtheTango.

Sincethen,thefortunesofTangohavewaxedandwaned.UnderthegovernmentofJuanPeroninthe1930s,TangobecamewidelyfashionableandamajorpartofArgentina'snationalidentity.Inthe1950s,astringofmilitarydictatorswithastrongdistasteforpublicgatheringspulledTango'snumbersdown.TheadventofRockandRollalmostkilledthedancealtogether.

Morerecently,however,Tangohasenjoyedaculturalresurgence.LondonhasbecomesomethingofaTangocapital-YourwriterregularlyhearsofthedebaucheryofallnightTangopartieswhichtakeplaceinthebarsofSoho-
