Take initiative and start improving and developing your skill set in your field of business. It is up to you to seek out those opportunities.

President’s Message

LUIS CASAS SFV President

Luis Casas Tree Service

Rising to the Top

How do you go to from an entry level employee to being promoted to a

leadership position or even starting your own business? I believe it comes down to just one word, Responsibility. You must dedicate yourself to the work and stay consistent.

The first step is to have your boss or mentor discuss and set clear professional career goals. This gives you a clear target

to always be working towards. You can’t achieve a goal if you don’t know what it is or the steps that must be cleared to achieve. The path to your goals is never a straight line. It will probably look more like zig zag that loops and sometimes even reverses.

Take initiative and start improving and developing your skill set in your field of business. It is up to you to seek out those opportunities. Document your achievements. You will find that lifelong learners will greatly outperform employees that just show up to work.

Employers like employees that are focused on the team rather than themselves. This type of employee that goes above and beyond will

always be the first one to be thought of during promotions. Don’t be afraid to take a leadership position. People will start to look to you for help, answers, and guidance. This will make you indis-pensable to the business.

Life is full of opportunities. Start to network with people with similar skill sets and skill sets you want to gain. Join groups or organizations that expose its members to different aspects of your field. Every person has an experience from which you can learn.

Don’t miss our SFV Family Fun Day at Rancho Madera Park in Simi Valley on Saturday, August 24. Bring your kids and grandkids. There’ll be a jumper and a ton of games. See you then. – Luis

Power to Choose Our Tomorrows

August is always a special time of the year. Even though it can get very hot, it seems work opportunities abound as clients

request more innovating landscape and hardscaping ideas and outdoor living accomplishments. This was very evident in this year’s Beautification Awards presentation.

I have found that as landscape designers and installers, we tap into a creative medium that is always available as we turn great ideas into reality. We are all part of a Source of infinite ideas, each an original, creative expression from its Source. You never run out of new ideas, as the Source is an infinite well of inspiration that never runs dry of creativity. There is a certain rush in feeling the ideas take hold, and finalize in completeness. Focus and vision and clarity lead all of us in the direction in which we wish to go. And, yes, we are all guided by the same direction finder. I believe that being thankful is a daily idea for recognizing the bounty that surrounds us – and, it is a product of our own thinking.

As important as it is to be focused on our business, realize it is just as important to take time to smell the flowers, take time for yourself, and focus on your loved ones – family and friends. It has been said “God gave us the freedom of power to choose our tomorrows.” There is a presence within each and every one of us. I believe the world is a better place because I exist. The same is true for you. I am thankful for each of us in our abilities to create a life full of success, happiness, health and love for ourselves and for others. And yes…Love Does, Absolutely! The following challenge is especially meaningful for us entrepreneurs. – Dave

Producers and ConsumersThere are two kinds of people all the whole world through, producers and consumers; so just which kind are YOU?

Are you producing something to add to each today, and make this old world better when you have gone away? Or are you just consuming and grasping all you can; but giving out to no one, nor helping any man?

Are you creating, building achievements that will last, when this day with its chances has gone to join the past? Or are you simply wasting your birthright year by year, and missing life’s great reason why each of us is here?

Will our old world be richer because you pass this way? And will you leave behind you something that will stay?

Consumer or Producer?…The many or the few?…The getters or the givers?…WHICH ONE OF THEM ARE YOU?

Just Takin’ a Moment

Association Tips: 6 Irresistible Member Benefits that Convince People to Join and Renew From an article by Elizabeth Bell

1. Members-Only Opportunity BoardsEveryone wants to land a great job or great client, right? Your asso-ciation has the industry connections to make that happen. Keep potential project postings open to the public to entice prospects, but make the application available to members only.

2. Networking and Directory AccessOnline networking, like connecting through an online community or looking up experts in a directory, is also a valuable benefit. Plus, when you help members create a network of their peers, they’ll become more engaged and more connected to you through these relationships (can you spell r-e-t-e-n-t-i-o-n?).

3. Flexible Online Learning and Certifications

Lifelong learning is a major goal for many people, so provide flexible learning options to help your members master new skills. Award certificates to members who pass a course, or series of courses, so they can demon-strate their expertise to their clients or present and future employers.4. Meaningful Volunteer OpportunitiesAssociation members volunteer for several reasons, but every one of them is hoping to get something out of the experience. Two of the top reasons volunteers seek opportunities are to support a cause, and professional experience. Motivate members to join your asso-ciation and renew their membership by providing these benefits.

5. Exclusive, Industry-Specific OffersCreate your own industry-specific benefit by identifying a core problem that many of your members face then solve it. You can do this by creating content, like a professional education course, or by building a partnership with a company.

6. Build Benefits that Provide a Clear ROIThe most irresistible member benefits are the ones that help members see a return on investment (ROI) for their dues. Discounts, training, professional opportunities, and other benefits that help members save money or advance their careers are some of the best ways to earn ROI. These are some of the benefits that will convince people to join and renew year after year.
