This month’s article is dedicated to Hydration. When do most people drink? Most of us only drink when we are thirsty or at meals. When should we drink? We should hydrate more often than most do. Why? Dehydration can cause many problems, especially in the elderly.

Many are unaware of how important our hydra-tion status is. As we age, the water content of the body decreases as well as the thirst sensa-tion, this leads to a higher risk for dehydration. Dehydration in the elderly is a frequent cause for hospitalization – one of the top ten reasons in fact.

Dehydration can lead to: • impaired cognition• confusion• falls• constipation• kidney problems• reduced swallowing capacity• decreased mobility• communication disorders

How much should we drink? • Minimum- five 8-oz glasses of water/day• Average – eight 8-oz glasses of fluids/

day• Foods high in water content can also

help with hydration: fruits, vegetables

and soups• Caution with

regular cof-fee, alcohol and protein d r i n k s a s these have a diuretic ef-fect and can lead to dehydration.

How can we prevent dehydration?• Make fluids readily available – i.e. use

water bottle• Set a timer as a reminder to drink• Drink at least 8-oz at every meal and

medication time• Drink warm drinks in the winter and cool

in the summer • OR - Make water and other beverages

more appealing: 1) Drink out of a fun straw.2) Use low-calorie drink mixes like Crys-tal Light or Mio drops.3) Add lemon, lime, cucumber slices or frozen grapes (have a pre-made pitcher in the refrigerator).4) Make your own Arnold Palmer – unsweetened iced tea with light lemon-ade.

I’ll Drink to that!!!!

Snowbirds Targeted

Snowbird season kicks off as millions of retirees travel to warmer states. While escaping the colder weather, there is a definite increase in scams against snowbirds with many fraudsters focusing on the older seasonal residents. Here are some tips to follow:

BEFORE LEAVING:

• Secure your house. Set up timers for your lights. Ask a friend or neighbor to keep a watch and to stop by occasionally.

• Enlist a ‘”What-If” contact. Make a list of anything that could possibly go wrong and whom to call when it does.

• Call your insurer. Ask if there is anything you need to do before you leave to en-sure full homeowner coverage (maintain-ing heat at certain temperature, shutting off water supply, etc.).

• Notify payment card providers. Let them know when you are leaving, where you are going and how long you will be away.

AFTER YOU ARRIVE:

• Stick with one credit card. This makes account monitoring easier.

• Use Wi-Fi wisely. Public spots at librar-ies and coffee shops are no place to do online shopping or banking. Hot spot hackers can access log-in credentials and obtain other sensitive data.

KNOW THE MOST COMMON SNOWBIRD SCAMS:

• Be cautious when seeing new providers that physicians are not ordering tests that aren’t needed.

• Repair rip-offs. Beware of fraudulent contractor teams. Unless you initiate the contact, never let a stranger inside.

• Parking lot ploys. Thieves search for unlocked cards with out-of-state license plates and will disable wires under the hood or flatten tires. When you return, these same thieves offer to “help” for a ridiculous fee.

What can you do to protect yourself from fraud?

1. Keep your personal numbers (Medicare, Social Security, and bank account num-bers) PERSONAL.

2. Contact the ND Attorney General Con-sumer Protection office at 1-800-472-2600.

3. Call the ND SMP office if you have ques-tions about Medicare fraud.

Information provided by North Dakota Senior Medicare Patrol. To contact or locate your local SMP, go to www.ndcpd.org/smp or call 701-858-3580 or toll-free 800-233-1737.
