BLUES, BOOZEAND BARBEQUEThe most enjoyable

dining on Flathead Lake

If you are traveling north up Highway 35 from thesouth end of Flathead Lake, you can’t miss the EastShore Smoke House. An old log fort on the left at

MM 6.5sets backfrom theroad, next to ahuge,spruce-ringedlawn.A largesignatop a30-foot tree trunk announces, “Blues, Booze, Barbeque”and of course that is what the Smoke House is famousfor. Arguably the best comfort food in this part ofMontana — not white tablecloth or foo foo — butunbelievably delicious. Owners Jim and Janice say ifyou’re looking for white tablecloths, maybe you shouldtry Las Vegas or Los Angeles — not the Flathead.Your first glimpse of the Smoke House can be deceptive.“What’s inside there?” you might think. And really, untilyou walk through the big old pine slab gates and see theinterior for yourself, it’s pretty much a mystery. But theinside is definitely worth the price of admission —which of course is free. Hundreds of old framed localNative American photos, antiques, artifacts, toys, vin-tage rifles, tools, documents and more line the walls andshelves. A big stone fireplace in the corner of the diningroom and a beautiful 100-plus-year-old parlor stove inthe bar take the edge off a chilly evening. Yes, theyboth work perfectly.

Speaking of bars, the Smoke House has a great one with12 highly acclaimed micro brews made right here on thelake and surrounding area. Up to 30 micro and importbeers are also available in bottles. Montana is the percapita number one craft brewery state in the Union, andthe Smoke House has the goods to prove it. They don’tstop there. The Smoke House wine list is very compre-hensive and includes some of the world’s best winegrowing states such as California, Oregon andWashington; plus, wines from Australia, Argentina andChile, to name a few.The bar is full service with more than 200 liquors andliqueurs to choose from including some of the best single malt scotches like Glenlvit and Glen Fiddich. But the food is where this place really shines. TheSmoke House features made-from-scratch food, chipotlecheddar biscuits, Flathead cherry and rum barbecue

sauces, homemadepies and cobbler andtriple chocolate cherry bread puddingwith creme anglaise. And, of course wecan’t fail to recom-mend their aged cer-tified black angussteaks, ribs and

smoked prime rib (with horseradish whipped cream onthe side.)

(paid advertisement)“The bottom line is: you will leave

happy, you won’t leave hungry, and you will be back.
