Chatter with Cathy

I love the month of March for many reasons: my granddaughter’s

birthday, St. Patty’s Day, my birthday, spring arrives, my son’s birth-

day, my husband’s birthday. You get the picture, much to celebrate

and enjoy. This March will be busy not just because of birthdays but

all the quilting events on my calendar. I’m so looking forward to the

March 3 workshop doing “Trees” with Kelly Meanix. I may even use

Batiks (and if you know me, you know they are not my favorite fabric,

sorry). Then the AQS Lancaster Quilt Show starts on March 21 and an-

other class, “Feathered Star” with Nancy Mahoney. I always wanted to

take a class with her so I can check that off my bucket list. Whatever

your plans for March are, I hope it includes sewing and enjoying the

daffodils (my favorite flower besides the sunflower). Happy spring!

Happy Easter!

March 20, 2018 Guild Meeting

Kelly Meanix will have presented her workshop at the beginning of

March on free-formed trees. I'm telling you ahead of time that it was

fun because so many people spoke very highly of her class. Kelly was

highly recommended by Ruth Heslin, Cheryl Lynch, and several mem-

bers of Loose Threads. Her presentation in March at our guild meet-

ing is entitled "How Blogging, Instagram, and Facebook Changed the Way I Quilt." Perhaps you have had a similar experience.

April 17, 2018 Guild Meeting

In April Mary Molettiere will demo a project using wool. Sandy Dar-

lington is providing the wool and the guild will provide the thread and

a needle for you to use. You can bring in both paper and embroidery

scissors, a small stapler, a staple remover and a willingness to learn

the versatile wool applique blanket stitch and have fun. You will take

home a finished project or at least almost finished. Mary is an

accomplished quilter who has many other fiber art talents.

Happy Sewing

What To Do With Unwanted WIPS?

Last month you read how Kim Jamieson-Hirst of Chat-

terbox Quilts dealt with her WIP/UFO projects that were

languishing in boxes. Here are some of her suggestions

on what to do with those projects that you don’t want to

ever work on.

1. Give it to a quilting friend

2. Donate it to a group making charity quilts.

(See Maxine!)

3. Put them on the back table at our meeting

and put a Free sign on it

4. Another idea – give it to the Grandma’s

Attic committee for our quilt show

MISSING BOOK: We are missing an autographed book by Bethanne Nemesh. At our

December meeting the book was placed on the back information table waiting to be

put into the library cart. Did someone pick up the book thinking to borrow it? If you

have it by mistake, please return it so it can be put into the library.

Meeting Minutes of February 20, 2017

WELCOME: President Cathy welcomed all members and returning members Norma Breibiel and Ann

Lister. We had two guests join us for the evening: Kristen Laws and Beth Thomson. We have a new

member, Joann Kirschenmann

DOOR PRIZES: The four door prize winners were Gerry Fontaine, Marge Quinn, Joanne Franklin and

Vickie Lopresti.

COMFY QUILTS: The comfort quilt workshop is Saturday, February 24th. We have 20 members who

signed up. There is plenty of room for more. Maxine told us if you don’t want to bring your sewing

machine, there are comfy dolls that need to be stuffed and hand stitched closed. Last year we donated

167 quilts. Our goal for 2018 is 125. Maxine thanked the ladies who came during the month to her

house to work on comfort quilts. Cathy reminded us that one of our member obligations is to help with

or donate to comfort quilts.

BLISS CLUB: Jean Corday, Cathy Fennell, and Judy Snook showed their version of the Garland table run-

ner project. Jean made the full-size table runner pictured in the book and a small wall hanging, Cathy

did a larger size table topper and Judy, a skinny table runner. Our group of club ladies will present their

Garland projects at the March meeting! We also spoke about trying some of the new colors of the year;

Ultra Violet 18-3838 and Tiger Lily K001-957.

QUILT SHOW INFORMATION: Cathy Fennell gave an over view of the quilt show registration form and

passed a copy of the form out to each member. She told us visitors really enjoy reading the description

area about the quilts and encouraged everyone to fill that area out. She said the forms need to be sent

to her electronically. The deadline for the forms will probably be in the middle of September this year.

You can submit three quilts. One can be bed sized.

RETREAT: Joan Gunder thanked Marge for helping with the retreat these past couple of months. Joan

said there are still two rooms available for the Spring retreat which is being held April 5th to 8th. You can

contact Joan if you are interested in attending. Next month she will have information for the Fall retreat.

WORKSHOPS: Jean Hayden announced several workshops. On March 3rd Kelly Meanix’s workshop will

be Free Formed Trees. April 28th will be a UFO workshop. May 19th will be a boutique round robin. We

will be making projects for the quilt show boutique. On June 23rd Cheryl Lynch will do a Mini Mosaics

workshop. In July we will have another Comfort Quilt workshop. Jean also asked all the ladies that did

the mystery workshop in January to show their quilts. There were many beautiful quilts displayed and

paraded around the room.

WIPS: Cathy Fennell’s WIP challenge has been a success. #5 and #9 projects were shown by many guild

members. Prizes were given out. The winner for the #5 month was Marge Quinn and winner for the #9

month was Ruth Heslin. In March, bring in project #2 from your list.

HOHL CHALLENGE: Phyllis Manley told us there are five guilds involved in the Hohl Challenge and

there will be at least 40 quilts on display.

PERKIOMEN VALLEY QUILT BLOCKS: Sandy Darlington will be collecting the quilt blocks again in

March. These blocks are being sent to CA to be put together into quilts for the fire and mudslide victims.

BEREAVEMENT CENTER: President Cathy asked if anyone can help at the bereavement center to bind

squares to please contact Sally Chillington.

PROGRAM: This month’s program included four technique demonstrations by four different members

and an Accuquilt demonstration. Nancy Hannum demonstrated no hand sewing piped binding and fac-

ing binding for art quilts. Beth Mancini demonstrated machine sewing a binding. Cathy Fennell demon-

strated top-top-side-side machine sewing a binding. Susan Glaser demonstrated cutting fabric into

binding efficiently with a small amount of fabric. Chris Candello demonstrated our AccuQuilt cutter. It

was a great program with lots of learning. We did a rotation to each demo approximately every 15 min.

FIFTY-FIFTY: Sandy Dounce was the winner.

SHOW AND TELL: We had a very small show and tell.

MEETING ADJOURNED at 9:05 p.m.

NEXT MEETING: March 20, 2018 Respectfully submitted,

Jean Corday

Mystery Quilt Workshop

On January 27th Beth Mancini led a well-

attended full day workshop of a MYSTERY quilt

project. Participants had no idea of the design

but were given ‘clues’ in the supply list to help in

their decision making and fabric selection. Our

February show and tell demonstrated just what

a successful workshop this was…13 members

brought their completed quilt tops to display!

February Program – Binding Variations

Cathy Fennell – Matching bindings

to the quilt edges

In February, four members of our guild demonstrated four

different ways to bind a quilt. The sessions were up close

and personal so members could ask lots of questions and

observe the small manipulations done when applying

binding on the quilt edge. Cathy Fennell, Susan Glaser,

Nancy Hannum, and Beth Mancini each showed their spe-

cific technique in 10 minute sessions and then members

rotated around the room to view the next. Chris Candello

was also on hand with the guild’s Accuquilt to instruct

interested members on its proper use.

Chris Candello – Accuquilt Demo

Nancy Hannum - Adding piping to binding

[

Beth Mancini – No hand sewing bindings

Susan Glaser – Continuous bias bindings

Table Runner Bliss Club 2018

Our Tablerunner Club will have its first reveal at

our March meeting. Our first project is the Gar-

land runner that is the project on the front cov-

er of the book. It will be fun to see what colors

and interpretation were chosen. If anyone has

purchased a book on their own and would like

to join the club, let me know and I will add you

in. As an extra bonus, I do send out free pat-

terns that are exclusive to the club.

Fat Quarter Raffle

March is the last month for polka dot fat

quarters. I have some fat quarter patterns

for the winner to choose from that might

be used with all the fat quarters won.

The next theme will be floral patterns for

April, May, and June. They can be floral

prints that are big, bright, and bold or

muted and delicate or whatever your heart

desires.

Fall Retreat

The Fall Retreat will be at the Amish View Inn

and Suites located at 3125 Old Philadelphia

Pike (Route 340), Bird-in-Hand, Pa. The dates

are Friday to Sunday, November 9th - 11th. The

sewing area accommodates 16 sewers, and so

the number who can attend is limited. Most of

the gals who attended last fall have indicated

an interest in going again and so this leaves

only room for an additional four. The Amish

View Inn provides a complimentary buffet

breakfast that could suffice for lunch depend-

ing on how much you ate and what time! All

other meals are on the individual.

The preliminary rates for two to a room =

$294, 3 nights per person.

The preliminary rate for one to a room =

$568, 3 nights

Joan will have additional details and registra-

tion forms at the March meeting. Be sure to

bring your checkbooks and/or cash for the $50

deposit to hold your place. NOTE: Deposits

are non-refundable, unless you get someone to

take your place.
