Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin was recently named one of the iVantage HealthStrong™ Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) in the United States.

AVH is proud of the efforts of our physicians and staff who have contributed to our hospital achieving this designation. This noteworthy accomplishment is a testament to the patient-first care exhibited by our employees. There are more than 1,330 Critical Access Hospitals across the country.

The iVantage HealthStrong™ Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals, including AVH, scored best among critical access hospitals on the iVantage Health Analytics’ Hospital Strength Index™.

AVH also achieved such recognition in 2012. The Hospital Strength Index is the first-ever comprehensive rating of CAHs and the results recognize the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals that provide a “safety-net “to communities across rural America—measuring them across 56 different performance metrics, including quality, outcomes, patient perspective, affordability and efficiency. More information can be found at www.iVantageHealth.com/HSI.

Valley Birthplace Earns High MarkThe Valley Birthplace at AVH recently learned that practices they implemented resulted in a breastfeeding initiation rate higher than the average of other New Hampshire healthcare facilities. The AVH rate of 84.8 percent was nearly 5 percent higher than the state average.

Valley Birthplace staff nurses Anne Laroche and Karin Dorval, along with Dr. Brian Beals, Coos County Family Health Services, have been attending the NH’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding: Step by (baby) Steps. This is a collaborative effort among Granite State hospitals to help promote and maintain breastfeeding. In addition to this attendance, education has been initiated to Medical Assistants of the Obstetrics office of AVH Surgical Associates. This helps provide breastfeeding

information during the patient’s prenatal period. Physicians are also being provided information to help promote breastfeeding.

It has been well documented that women are more likely to breastfeed their babies if their doctors discuss the topic with them in the office. AVH Women’s Services staff received instruction regarding the importance of skin-to-skin contact for all newborns, especially in the first hours after birth. They have also learned about the importance of “rooming in,” where mother can best recognize infant feeding cues.

For more information or a tour of the Valley Birthplace, please call (603) 326-5885. For prenatal care through the OB/GYN department of AVH Surgical Associates, please call (603) 752-2300.

Long-Service Employees 2012# Our employees help make this hospital what it has been for more than a century and what it is today. They truly live our mission and carry out our values each day, providing high-quality patient care and ancillary services. Every year, AVH recognizes and thanks its employees with 10 years or more of service at a recognition banquet. Those employees having a five-year anniversary receive a certificate, service pin and service luncheon. All recognized employees are given a special gift of appreciation.
