EARLY DISMISSAL PRIOR TO SUMMER VACATION The early dismissal of students, for the summer vacation, one hour prior to the regular school closure on the last day of school, is permitted. In all cases, parents/guardians and others concerned must be advised in advance of such early closings and adequate supervision must be provided at designated traffic crossings. Guidelines • When the last day of school prior to the Christmas break and summer vacation is a Professional Activity Day,
this policy does not apply to the school day immediately preceding the Professional Activity Day. • When early dismissal of students is permissible under this policy, parents/guardians and others concerned must
be advised in advance of such early dismissal and adequate supervision must be provided at designated traffic crossings.

TCDSB IS DOCUMENTING THE HISTORY OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION IN TORONTO--ALUMNI, PAST & PRESENT STAFF INVITED TO CONTRIBUTE
The Toronto Catholic District School Board has approved the writing of a complete history of Catholic education in the City of Toronto. This history will give recognition to all those who have contributed to the development of the strong publicly funded Catholic school system that exists today. The author of the history will be Dr. Robert T. Dixon, who is a recognized author and legal consultant on Catholic schools in the province of Ontario. An advisory group will work with Dr. Dixon, with the goal of completing the history sometime during the 2005 calendar year. To provide authentic information, the author and the advisory group are inviting individuals who may possess records, photographs and other relevant materials (particularly from the early days of Toronto’s Catholic schools) to submit such items for consideration and information. Items should have as much information as possible on the people, schools or events depicted. Items will be returned provided the sender includes a return address with the submission.

For those employees intending to file for employment insurance benefits during the summer months, please note that it is the employee’s responsibility to file his/her claim with a Canada Employment Centre on the next working day immediately following the last day worked, pending receipt of his/her Record of Employment from the Board. • TARGET ITEMS FOR THEFT - computers, printers, fax machines, A.V. equipment, musical
instruments and power tools. • RELOCATE TARGET ITEMS -
a) Out of portables b) Out of access - away from heavy traffic areas c) Out of construction areas into a secure location with burglar alarm, screened windows, and/or motion detectors, if possible.
• INVENTORY LISTS should be updated for easy identification of missing items. • LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS - Only active, supervised rooms should be unlocked. • CLOSE CURTAINS - The sight of accessible target items is an invitation to thieves. • PERSONAL PROPERTY - The Board’s insurance policy does not cover property owned by staff or
students. Personal property should be locked in desks, cupboards or lockers during the school year but should be taken home for vacation periods.

JOHN BROOKS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The John Brooks Community Foundation is a volunteer-based organization founded in 1981 to assist in the development and support of young people. The foundation aims to motivate students of African descent to achieve academic excellence and to give them an awareness of their importance in society. Since its inception, we have distributed over $110,000 in scholarships and bursaries to over 650 students, in particular, young people of African descent, in middle school, secondary school and those entering post-secondary studies. The Foundation aims to motivate students to achieve academic excellence and to give students an awareness of their importance to society through social programs and the scholarship fund. The Foundation presents awards annually to students from Grade 7 to 12 in order to encourage them to work harder towards their goals. London Catholic School Board 'contracts out'
When Alberto Dirienzo retired from St. John’s School in the Toronto Catholic District School Board, he was given full honours. In a school assembly on May 11w which lasted over an hour, every class got up and thanked the head caretaker for the extraordinary dedication and service he had given the St. John’s community. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” said vice principal Cathy Banfield, “as class after class got up and told Mr. Darien how much they had appreciated his work and concern for them. One class even gave him a golden broom and dustpan, When you think of the service this man has given this board for 21 years, it was totally warranted. It really was the curriculum brought to life, a celebration of community and everybody’s part in that community.” Later in the evening, the entire staff gathered with former principals (including Kevin Scott who travelled from Niagara to add his kudos) and the Dirienzo family. Captain Jason Feiko Visits St. Anthony School The students of St. Anthony School were very privileged by the visit of Captain J. Feiko of The Royal Canadian Forces in Petawawa. Captain J. Feiko share with our Junior and Intermediate students his first hand experiences of Canada's Peacekeeping Mission in Afghanistan. The slides and commentary provided by Captain J. Feiko gave meaning, life, and relevance, for our students as to Canada's significant Global Peacekeeping role. The students and staff were left with a heightened awareness and appreciation of the daily sacrifices made by the men and women in the Canadian Forces for the benefit of others. St. Anthony’s thanks Captain J. Feiko for his moving presentation, for his peacekeeping work, and for renewing in staff and students the pride of being Canadian. St. Anthony’s wishes him well, and hopes that he is able to make a return visit to the family of TCDSB schools.

Student reaping value of education

St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School student Meron Asmelash, 18, discovered that recently when the company where she is doing her co-operative education placement offered her the opportunity to take a $2,000 computer course free of charge.
And the downtown company that made the Grade 12 student the offer, Alias, has quite the reputation itself in the computer business, having made a lot of news recently for designing the software for special effects in such movies as Finding Nemo, Lord of The Rings and The Matrix.
"They thought it would be helpful for me," said Asmelash, who wants to be a graphic artist.
"It's a program that is recognizable in the industry, so having working knowledge would really help me get my foot in the door. It's great."
Asmelash said her placement at Alias, which started in mid-April and ends in mid-June, is her first job. She works in the company's marketing department doing Internet tasks.
"It's different," Asmelash said. "I like that. It's not like school. You have to be there. You have to discipline yourself. You have to make sure all the tasks are done. I love it there. It's fun."
INTERVIEW PROCESS
Sandy Slosel, St. Patrick's teacher monitor for the school's co-op education program, said Asmelash went through a rigorous interview process to get the Alias placement.
"She was selected because of her maturity level, her knowledge of computer software, design sense and work ethic," Slosel said. "It's a unique opportunity. She is doing work they expect a full-time worker to do."
Co-op education programs exist at most high schools. They place senior students with companies in the community to expose them to the working world before graduation as well as to help develop career choices.
St. Pat's, Slosel said, currently has 40 students placed with employers ranging from daycare centres to automotive garages.
"We accommodate all skills," Slosel said.
Called Introduction Maya, it concerns Alias-developed graphic software that people from all over the world come to Toronto to take.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Asmelash said she's grateful for the opportunity, especially since the course is currently beyond her financial means. As well, she recommends co-op education to her fellow teens, saying it's a good way to research further job opportunities.
"For me, it's just made me want to become a graphic designer even more," she said. "...It's just made me more determined."

Thus applicants would have to have a sound knowledge of all the board’s initiatives in numeracy. Much of the work involves assisting teachers in improving their teaching of the mathematics curriculum through a “teach the teacher” model. Teachers would need to be comfortable working with the grade 7 to grade 10 continuum in order to support the Board’s “Success for All” initiatives. Applications are invited for the position for Resource Teacher in Numeracy with duties to commence September 2004. POSITIONS AVAILABLE: 2 (two) TCDSB is inviting applications from current teachers for the position of Resource Teacher for Numeracy. These teachers will have the responsibility of providing support to the schools in their efforts to implement the Board’s initiatives in Numeracy. The Resource Teacher would also provide support to the Professional Learning Centres presently in our schools. Thus applicants would have to have a sound knowledge of all the board’s initiatives in Numeracy. Much of the work involves assisting teachers in improving their teaching of the mathematics curriculum through a “teach the teacher” model. Teachers would need to be comfortable working with the grade 7 to grade 10 continuum in order to support the Board’s “Success for All” initiatives.
