Tips to “sweeten up” Valentine’s Day.

From its bloody origins to its sweet, chocolaty modern day traditions,Valentine’s Day is a spe-cial day of the year dedicated to showing people how much they are loved. Even though so many people do things to celebrate this holiday, many do not know how Valentine’s Day became a holiday. Who is St. Valentine and where did these tradi-tions come from? There are three legends that explain the origin of St. Valentine. The Catholic Church recognizes

three saints by the name of Val-entine, all of whom were martyred. One legend says that Valentine was

a priest during the third century

in Rome. C l a u d i u s II decided that single men made

better sol-diers than those

with wives and fami-lies, so he outlawed marriage

for young men. Valentine, seeing the injustice of this decree, defi ed Clau-dius and continued marrying young lovers in secret. When his actions were discovered, Claudius had Val-entine put to death. Other legends suggest that Valentine was killed for helping Christians escape from harsh Roman prisons, where they were beaten and

tortured. According to one of the leg-ends, Valentine, who was at the time imprisoned, sent out the very fi rst “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl, possibly the jailer’s daugh-ter, who visited him while he was c o n f i n e d . B e f o r e his death, it was said that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine.” This phrase is still used today in many Valentine’s cards. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends are murky, the stories all emphasize a man’s appeal as a heroic, sympathetic, and roman-tic fi gure. The name Valentine would become one of the most popular in England and France. People celebrate Valentine’s Day in different ways. The most tra-ditional way is to give chocolates and fl owers. If you like to show your love for a special someone why not try something different? Why not get creative and fi nd a unique way to say “I love you” to that special person? Here are 10 ideas to try for Valen-tine’s Day:1) Have a picnic dinner. Even though February can be quite cold in

Wisconsin, see if there are any inside venues nearby.- - -2) Make a homemade meal. Why go to a fancy restaurant and spend a lot of money, when a great time can be had at home? It is inexpensive and relatively simple to cook the person’s favorite dish. You could also make heart shaped hamburgers or cheat a

little and pick up a heart shaped pizza (Rocky’s, Papa

Murphy’s, etc.)- - -3) Wander around town.Take some time to go somewhere

in town that one has never been to.

Make a date out of it.

- - -4) Have a Valentine’s

Day party. Invite friends over for a social gathering

on Valentine’s Day. For those in a relationship, make it a party for

couples. Single people can make it a party where everyone watches hor-ror movies and talk about anything but love.- - -5) Pamper your Pet. Since Valen-tine’s Day is about spending time with those one loves most, why not treat one’s little doggie to a special grooming, the dog park, or make him/her a special treat?- - -6) Treat Yourself. Pamper yourself by getting a new hairstyle, manicure, pedicure. It can be a great day to re-lax and forget about worries.- - -7) Read a Love Story. Why not

grab a romantic book from the shelf and read with some candlelight?- - -8) Call a crush. Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to contact a crush, and maybe not stay single.- - -9) Movie marathon. Spend the day with a celebrity you have a crush on by watching movies with him or her in them.- - -10) A heartfelt letter. Tired of all of the pink and red? Expressing love through a letter is perfect then. It is old-fashioned, but it will still touch the heart of that special someone.- - -

Remember that Valentine’s Day is meant to celebrate love, and not just the romantic kind. So, hug your grandma, tell your mom you love her, and spend time with friends. Show love to others, and you are sure to have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

memory at Wisco so far? Why?

My favorite memory at Wisco was when I traveled to Mad-ison to participate in Team

State with the wrestling team last year.

Who did you choose as your escort and why?

I chose Laurel Hirschmann because she is a great friend. I am lucky to have spent all four awesome years at Wisco

with her.

What is your favorite thing about Festival week and why?

My favorite thing about festival week are the dress up days. Seeing students show their school spirit is awesome to me. Also, I like that we

can wear sweatpants and athletic shorts.

Is there anything in particular that you’re going to miss about

Wisco after graduating?

I am going to miss seeing some of the teachers here at Wisco. Some of

them are great role models to me.

What does it mean to you to be nominated for Festival court?

It’s a cool feeling knowing that your classmates have respect for

you.

Is there anything in particular that you’re going to miss about

Wisco after graduating?

The Christian education from my teachers.
