VALENCIADespite its size, Valencia is an unknown city and one ofSpain’s hidden gems. It is a multifaceted lace, mixing Gothicarchitecture with the rough old fishermen’s quarter of ElCabanyal. There are also fusion restaurants, futuristicmuseums and two long beaches – Las Arenas and LaMalvarrosa.

The Romans founded Valencia in 138 B.C.as Valentia Edetano. After the fall of theEmpire, several rulers followed, but fewleft as strong an impression as the Moorswho in the 11th century made Valencia thecapital of an independent northern Muslimkingdom. A Moorish mosque once stoodwhere the city’s cathedral is today, andthere is still a Muslim bathhouse on CalleAlmirantes in the old part of town.Valencia’s golden years are clearlyreflected in its architecture. There areGothic buildings all over the city includingthe silk exchange La Lonja, andextravagant Baroque churches. Much ofthis wealth came from trading farmproduce and silk. The Valencia of todaycontinues to thrive, most clearly shown bythe impressive La Ciudad de las Artes y lasCiencias. The world famous architectsSantiago Calatrava and Felix Candela havecreated a futuristic cityscape with anumber of museums and attractions that istruly astonishing. Valencia’s other greatattraction is the Mediterranean Sea,bordered by the still rough old fishermen’squarter of El Cabanyal and the longbeaches of Las Arenas and La Malvarrosa.

There is a huge selection of restaurants inValencia. You will find everything fromhaute cuisine restaurants to fusioneateries, but the best bets are thetraditional Spanish ones. Paella (the ricedish where basically any availableingredient gets used) was invented inValencia and is served in almost everyrestaurant. The locals eat late and mostrestaurants don’t fill up until after 22.00.
Seu-XereaEnglish chef Stephen Anderson runs thecity’s most ambitious restaurant. It hasdark red walls, strict lines, white linentablecloths and large wine glasses. Themenu is full of surprises, with dishes suchas Oriental fishcakes with tzatziki, strawberry gazpacho, artichokes with foiegras, and the lamb dish paletilla de corderocon tabouleh y jugo de romero.

BARS & NIGHTLIFE #BARSANDNIGHTLIFE#

Spanish cities are often described as partydestinations in foreign travel guides. ButValencia is considered to have the bestnightlife of all, even among the Spaniardsthemselves. This is partly because of thelarge – 100,000 strong – studentpopulation. The locals go out late, usuallynot until 23.00, and most bars stay openuntil 03.00 or even later. The city’s mainparty street is Calle Caballeros in the
Barrio Carmen neighbourhood. Come herefor a mix of tascas (see ”Restaurants”),bars, and clubs. Simply ask around to findout which night-clubs are in vogue at themoment. These are some of the area’sbest bars:
Carmen Sui GenerisLuxurious bar with a hard to define mix ofpoetry evenings, theatre performances, and DJs spinning funk and 1980’s disco.Fortunately not all of it simultaneously. The 12th century city wall can be seen insome places.
