The electrons in the outer energy level are called valence electrons
What are valence electrons?
Practice
![Page 6: Valence Electrons](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020111/56813b44550346895da41de7/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
How do we know how many valence electrons does an element have?
• The group number tells us how many valence electrons are in each element.
![Page 7: Valence Electrons](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020111/56813b44550346895da41de7/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Atoms of elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbitals/levels of their atoms Exceptions:
Transition elements (3-12) Helium (actually has 2 valence electrons)
Group 1 = 1 electron
Group 2 = 2 electrons
Group 8 = 8 electrons
Except for He, it has 2 electrons

How many electrons do each of these atoms have in their outer
orbital/level?
What group (family) do these elements belong
to?
