REV- Mobility VehicleThe Three Wheeled Human Paddled Vehicle
DurationJan 2015 to April 2015
Objective:To design mode of transportation for mobility impaired person for outdoor use. Three wheeled human powered vehicle that also off ers aff ordability, comfort and ease the eff orts required to operate the Human Paddled Vehicle.
Activities:• History research, literature survey.• Market & user survey in Dehradun & Pune.• Marking touch & hit points.• Data analysis & identifying pain points.• Concept generation with new mechanism technique.• Package design for light weight, sturdy vehicle.• Using existing domain knowledge to develop concept the concept.• Making scale model in PU Pipe & Foam.
Initial Design BriefTo design self driven vehicle for mobility impaired person to ease routine commute.
Identify Phase- Scope StudyThe objective of a project is to design a mode of a transportation for mobility impaired person. The conveyance which reduce eff orts and support them to carry out day to day commute.Study the modest solutions that are used at present and understanding their operation. Also studying lifestyle of a mobility impaired person and providing af-fordable solution.
Mobility for Disabled Today
Identify Phase- User Say
DO:• Minimum daily travel distance more than 10 km & time for travel is approx. 2 hours & use of different cycles for indoor & outdoor• 6-8 hours working in FPH workshop• Earns approx ₹ 2000 monthly• Asks for help while traveling on steep roads (i.e. flyovers)• People refuse to repair the punctured tyre and hence he himself repairs the puncture• Travel without putting hood/cover, as it adds weight to the vehicle
FEEL:• Tagged as ‘Beggers’.• Change in the vehicle appearance can change opinion about us• Fear that break provided on front wheel will fail and an accident may occur
SAY:• Suffered from Poliomyelitis at childhood• FPH provided tricycle in 2009• Till then used ground mobility device• Tricycle provided mobility around town and can attain college easily• Difficult to use wheelchair outdoor as no drive mechanism• Feel pain in shoulders & palm while traveling on long distance• Lack of grip, support & harnesses while paddling.• Non folding vehicle, face problems while parking being larger in size
THINK:• Additional power source like battery powered can help to travel for long distance• Width can be made adjustable to make easy in accessing in small gullies and lanes• Need of brakes on rear wheels for better control• Support and harnesses because of lack of availability of grip while paddling

Insights PhasePain Points• Use of diff erent cycles for indoor & outdoor.• Tricycle is heavy weight & large in size.• No weather protection.• Pain in shoulders while traveling for long distance.• Face diff iculty while traveling on steep roads. Need support or help.• Tagged as baggers.• Feel fear of accidents as brakes are only provided on front wheel.• Lack of supports ,harnesses & grip.
Wish• External powered• Change in the look• Reduced weight and size• Brakes for rear wheels should be provided• Adjustable in width
Observations• On the other hand pedaled tricycle design still remains the same over the years• This humble mode of transport for the lower income group has not seen any modifications or redesign as they are mostly donated and have to be cost eff ective• Although in western countries there have been great deal of variations in the tricycle design and are used for various purposes other than transportation• Outdoor mobility device is not designed to be used indoors and vice versa
