  Accident insurance Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers  Are all volunteers of your National Society insured? Each year volunteers get injured, sometimes they die. Some National Societies provide accident insurance for their volunteers, but this is unfortunately not the case everywhere.  The International Federation has initiated a  volunteer insurance scheme to assist member societies. This insurance is the result of a decision at the International Federation General Assembly in 2005: “to encourage National Societies to make sure that they have adequate accident insurance coverage for volunteers, when they carry out Red Cross and Red Crescent activities.”  The global accident insurance is intended for National Societies who do not already have insurance. The pilot accident insurance scheme  will cover a volunteer during an activity on behalf of the National Society. Who is insured?  Volunteers while participating in activities organized by National Societies and/or the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies who have joined the insurance scheme are covered by this insurance. How much does it cost per volunteer? CHF 1.00 or CHF 0.50 per volunteer per year What is the period of insurance? 1 February to 31 January What is the maximum age of insured persons?  The age limit is 70 years. The insurance covers the year when the volunteer turns 70. Where is the insurance valid?  Worldwide What about war and conflict?  The coverage is extended to the accident resulting from an act of war or civil war provided the volunteer does not take any active part in the event. In case of death, the lump sum payment will be made.  An accident exists, if the volunteer involuntarily suffers a sudden impairment of health, which is due to an external event affecting his body. The insurer pays the disability benefits as a capital sum. The basis for the calculation of the benefits is the coverage amount and the degree of disability due to an accident. If the volunteer dies due to the accident within one year, the death benefits shall be paid according the coverage amount. If following an accident the volunteer has to pay medical expenses in respect of damage to his/her health caused by the accident within one year after the accident. The insurer pays, up to the amount stated in the policy, costs for medically prescribed therapy such as medical practitioner fees, operation, x-ray, drugs, bandages and ambulance transport. Evidence of these costs will have to be provided.

What is not covered? The insurer does not pay for:

•  dental treatments

•  spa rehabilitation measures

•  expenses incurred by methods of treatmentand medicaments which are not generally scientifically recognized

•  all sickness cases

•  accident caused under the influence of drugsor alcohol

•  accident, which are caused directly orindirectly by nuclear energy accident, whichare caused directly or indirectly by biologicand chemical acts of terrorism

•  accident which happen to the volunteer onthe way to or from the residence and thelocation of the volunteer activity 

How does a National Society enrol? A National Society has to:

•  complete the membership form

•  appoint one person to responsible for thismatter and to act as a contact person

•  provide the number of volunteers it has to beinsured

•  provide the average number of hours per  week that volunteers undertake voluntary activities

•  pay the premium according to the totalnumber of volunteers declared

  The National Society enrolling the insurancescheme will have to confirm that:

•  they have an accurate list of names of the volunteers,

•  that a volunteers name is added to the list within 7 days of their commencing volunteeractivities

•  the number of volunteers they have at thedate of the request and their expectation orfuture growth or reduction of the number of 

 volunteers.

  The insurance protection begins at the time which is listed in the insurance policy and whenthe payment has been made in the bank accountdefined in the subscription form.

What to do after an accident?  Without your cooperation the insurer cannotprovide the benefits. The person responsible(indicated in the subscription form) must notify the insurance unit at the Geneva office of theInternational Federation secretariat immediately.

  The claim form needs to be sent as soon aspossible together with relevant documentationsuch as medical report, medical invoices etc.

  The National Society has to provide officialconfirmation of the volunteer’s engagement and adetailed incident report needs to be provided.
