Welcome Our Newest Member!

Susan Sims  joined by Transfer of Le er from First Presbyterian 

Li le Rock where she was an ordained elder. She was a former 

member  of  Second  Presbyterian.  Susan  is  a member  of  the 

Presbyterian Village Auxiliary and has been involved with Stew‐

pot, women’s  circles    and  various other  church  ac vi es.  She 

and her husband Terry enjoy traveling in their free  me.  

On Mother’s Day Sunday our children’s choir presented “The Kite Story” at the 9:00 and 11:00  a.m.    worship services. Our children’s choir is open to members, visitors and friends from 4 years of age through  completed  5th  grade.  The  choir  is  in  recess  through  this  summer  and  will  resume  on Wednesday  evenings  this  fall.  Please  contact  Mary  Ibis,  maryibis@secondpreslr.org  for  more        informa on. 

 

Blake  Tierney  grew  up  in  Sherwood,  Arkansas  and  a ended  Hendrix College  in  Conway.  A er  gradua ng  with  a  Bachelor  of  Arts  in             Psychology  in  2014,  Blake  served  through  the  AmeriCorps  VISTA      Summer Associate Program at Our House in Li le Rock. Hooked by the impact  of Our House  on  homeless  and  near‐homeless  families,  Blake stayed a year as an AmeriCorps member with the youth programs and has  commi ed  another  year  as  the  VISTA  Leader.  Blake  will  work      primarily with young adults of Second, mostly  those  in  their  twen es, single and married.

Erin and  John Beard are members of Second Presbyterian 

Church.   Along with  their  children, Ansley and Milze  they 

are ac ve in a number of congrega onal ac vi es.  Erin is a 

Lead  Teacher  at  the  Second  Presbyterian  Church  Pre‐

School, where she has worked for nine years.  She is ac ve 

in the Maumelle PEO chapter.  Erin will provide leadership 

for our ministry with families with young children.

When a loved one dies, one of the most common early    

reac ons  is an  intense yearning, a  sense  that part of 

you is missing, and a hunger to have that person back.  

Sharing  stories  o en  provides  solace  and  helps  ease 

the  heartbreak.  Our  church  is  providing  a  place  to 

share those stories.   

On  the  third  Tuesday  of  every  month,  our  church 

hosts a  Faith and Grief  Luncheon  for  the  community 

from noon  to 1:00 p.m.  in    Second Hall. Par cipants 

will experience: 

A suppor ve community of persons who 

have experienced the death of a loved one. 

Comfort through scripture and prayers 

Encouragement through personal stories 

Hope in sharing your feelings and             

experiences

During  the Month of May,     Second Presbyterian Youth  (SPY) 

will be doing a fundraiser to help defray the cost of our 8th‐12th 

grade  youth  and  chaperones who  are  going  to  Presbyterian 

Youth Triennium. This is a once‐every‐three‐years Presbyterian 

Youth  Conference  on  the  campus  of  Purdue  University  in        

Indiana.    This  conference  has  over  5,000  Presbyterian  Youth 

that par cipate from all over the world! We worship together, 

have  group  me  together,  pray  together,  learn  new  things 

about our faith, and meet people from all over the globe. 

For  the  month  of  May  the  narthex  will  hold  our         

“SPY‐IENNIUM” envelopes, each with different dollar amounts 

on them.   Please select the envelope with the dollar amounts 

you’d  like  to  contribute  to our  trip  to  Triennium,  and  return 

them in the same envelope!  Don’t forget to fill out your “community chest” card in the envelope so that we have your names 

and addresses and can send you a special thank you while we are at Triennium.  Your support means so much to us!

Adult Sunday School Class: ” The Hebrew Prophets” May 1 - June 26 in Room 65/66

Paul Custodio Bube  (May; Pre‐canonical*, Amos, Hosea and Micah pp. 1‐57) and Henry Goodspeed  (June; 1st  Isaiah,   

Jeremiah and Ezekiel pp. 58‐136).   

Although the Hebrew Prophets do contain messianic messages agreed upon by both Chris ans and Jews, this course is 

built upon the primary assump on that the prophets had a message relevant to the moral and religious situa on of their 

own day.   While  it  is granted that  mes have changed  it  is denied that the basic  issues of  life are different today from 

those of  the days of  the prophets.   People s ll  trust  in material strength and delight  in wealth and  luxury while  they    

forget God.   People  s ll heed  the  speaker who presents  the pleasant message and  reject  tough‐love.   The prophets, 

properly interpreted, speak to ongoing issues of a world in need of direc on with regard to spiritual, poli cal and social 

issues. 

Paul  Custodio  Bube  is  the W.  Lewis McColgan  Professor  of  Religion,  Lyon  College.   He  also  teaches  courses  for  Lay      

Ministry  training  for  the  Presbyterian  Church.  The  courses  he  has  taught  include Hebrew  Bible  and New  Testament    

studies, The Minor Prophets, World Religions, Ethics (including Business and Professional and Chris an Ethics), The Early 

Church, Women and  the Bible, Advanced Seminar  in Religion and Philosophy and Process Thought.   Paul holds a PhD  

University of Southern California in Theological and Philosophical Ethics. 

Henry Goodspeed has taught numerous classes at Second Presbyterian Church since 1979.  He has a degree in     Biblical 

and Patris c Greek from Abilene Chris an University and a Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

The May and Deal families blessed our church by giving planned gi s to be used as scholarships for higher  educa on.    The    Scholarship  Commi ee  is  now  accep ng  applica ons  for  the May‐Deal Scholarships for the 2016‐2017 academic year.  The requirements are as follows: 

Applicants shall be residents of Arkansas. 

Applicants shall need financial assistance in obtaining the higher educa on he or she seeks. 

Undergraduate applicants must be full‐ me students. 

The  applica on  process  is  compe ve  for  a  fixed  pool  of  scholarship  funds.   Usually,  in‐coming freshmen  applicants  need  to  be  in  the  upper  20%  of  their  high  school  class.    Those  already  in       college must  be  in  good  standing  and  on  schedule  to  graduate with  their  freshman  class.  The       applica on  deadline  for  the  2016‐2017  school  year  is  June  10,  2016.    Applica ons  that  are       incomplete or  late will not be considered.   Applica ons are available  from Heather Rey or Aileen Moore.  Completed  applica ons should be submi ed to Aileen Moore. 

 

  

 

Surf Shack VBS Volunteer Opportun ities

 

 

We are excited about this upcoming adventure for our 4 year olds‐ 5th graders…..but it takes many volunteers to “bring it all together.” We appreciate those who have already volunteered to lead ac vi es and serve as shepherds!!!  For those of you who are unable to help out during the week of VBS, there are several ways you can be of help: 

Help prep for ac vi es and make decora ons (VBS work  mes are scheduled for May 31, 5:30‐7:00 p.m. and June 2, 11:30 a.m.‐1:00 p.m.  Other  mes may be added the week before VBS begins. 

Help decorate and set up for VBS on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. 

Help set‐up and serve at our Surf Shack Hot Dog Party at 5:30 pm on Monday, June 13. 

Help with the “Splash Party” water ac vi es on Monday evening following the Hot Dog Party.   

Items we s ll need for decora ng:  Palm Trees, bucket/pails, beach umbrellas, paddle/surf boards…..
